Reading transliterated akkadian texts sometimes is rather difficult, if the akkadian equivalents of the logograms are not given. This first alphabetic index of akkadian logograms offers help now: it contains the akkadian readings of most logograms, so the time consuming detour through the indexes of sign lists can be avoided in most cases. The circa 5000 entries also record the principal meaning of the akkadian word as well as references to sign lists (Borger, Mesopotamisches Zeichenlexikon or Labat, Manuel d'épigraphie akkadienne) or to akkadian dictionaries. In this way the epigraphic as well as the lexical approach to the text is enhanced. The book (written in German) is designed for students who are interested in akkadian literature, but cannot read cuneiform writing or Sumerian. The 2nd edition was thoroughly revised. In particular, R. Borger's Mesopotamisches Zeichenlexikon is now quoted as the standard sign list for Akkadian.
This article explores the concept of multiliteracies understood as skills related to reading and writing in more than one language from a linguistic, didactic, and educational policy perspective. The focus is set on the overarching concepts of (1) Sprachausbau (language extension) and (2) Sprachrepertoire (the individual linguistic repertoire). Based on these concepts, a distinction is made between multiliteracies in a narrow sense (spelling, dealing with writing systems) and multiliteracies in a wider sense (cross-linguistic text competence). The paper shows that there is a number of relevant didactic models which may be used to support multiliteracies in schools and adult education. We argue that their implementation in a culturally pluralistic society such as the Federal Republic of Germany is long overdue.
; In todays world, sport and tourism contribute significantly to public life. Together, they benefit society's health, recreation and general well-being and facilitate the functioning of common social interaction (Bette, 1999, p. 26). This useful social quality applies especially to the world of skiing. Skiing – as we know it – engages people with athletic as well as touristic interests. As such, skiing-evolution was – and still is – closely interwined with human social changes. The intent of this interdisciplinary study derives its goals from exactly that special place that skiing has attained in everyday life: By means of a comprehensive analysis of contemporary literature this study attempts to reconstruct the history of skiing in Austria and Germany for the period of 1880 to 1933. When one has to analyze historic facts, processes and related events, a researcher has to "rely on the 'notebooks of the past' that come out of historical record-keeping methods and passed the test of time." (Isaac, 1992, p. 173). The rather voluminous literary work of the main protagonists of competitive skiing and skiing tourism constitutes exactly these writings and commentaries contained in the 'notebooks' of skiing history. Scientific research has so far largely ignored this body of literature. This study examines these literary contributions in detail. The qualitative content-analysis in tradition of the Hermeneutic method proved to be reasonably adequate. The encompassing orientation of this research – its aim for multiple perspectives and interpretations – is, in theory, accounted for by referring to the paradigm of constructivism. Not only do constructionist applications serve to legitimize the research design but, in particular, Luhmann's theory of social systems – that provides content-analysis with inherent structure – gains in importance. It makes it possible to reduce the complexity of any research matter by allowing classification and thus organization of information content into theoretical categories. On one hand, contemporary information images document how the historical growth of skiing was influenced by social-cultural circumstance and attitudes of given periods. On the other hand, how skiing itself affected many social aspects and social conventions it permeated over time. Initially, at the turn of the century, skiing tourism was hailed as "great economic salvation" (Paulcke,1901, p.19) only later – in the 1920's – to be condemned by a plethora of skiing pioneers for its massive expansion and growth. It grew to be regarded as an invasion of wholesome mountain terrain by a "decadent and overcivilized world" (Lammer, 1923, p. 3). The phenomenon of massive occurrences – the rise of a new sort of sports spectacle – is manifested in competitive skiing. Skiing mutates into athletic excesses and mechanical optimization just as one could find in the processes of modern economics. Skiing competitions in the early 20th century often appeared to be still "some kind of comedy" (Zdarsky,1906/07, p. 60). Nonetheless, athletic success, rationalization, specialization and task-specific training dominated the skiing activities between World War I and II. These and further results of the content-analysis illustrate, how changes of the living environment as well as of the contemporary political situation reflect on the development of sports and influence it to a great extend.
Today, young people write in their leisure time far more than they did 15 years ago. Most often they use the new media to do their writing. This book explores whether the frequent writing of short messages and e-mails and participation in chats and social networks like Facebook have an influence on writing in school. Are there any similarities and relationships between the texts written in school and the private texts? For the first time, based on comprehensive data from Swiss students, this book provides empirical answers to these questions

The works of Erving Goffman are being read and interpreted differently. The reconstruction of Goffmann's implicit understanding of the human condition contributes to the comprehension of his writings: Goffmann's interest is the interactional order as a principal coping problem for the actor. This actor, labelled here as 'the Goff-Man', must constantly interpret situations, select action alternatives and applicate sign and symbol systems. The fact that he or she usually does this in a routine manner does not change the need that he or she cannot help choosing constantly. Seen from a culture theoretical perspective, the 'Goff-Man' can be termed an 'eccentric problem solver'. Viewed phenomenologically, he or she is a kind of 'existentialist social virtuoso'. According to his or her logic of action, he or she appears as a 'proto-political strategist'. The relevant type of actor for Goffman thus becomes central for a dramatological understandig of human coexistence.
The tides have always been an impressive natural phenomenon that triggered various types of emotional and rational reactions on the ideological as well as the practical level. The article sketches ancient perceptions and explanations of the tides as found in scholarly scientific writings as well as belletristic literature. The following characteristics can be observed: To begin with: in addition to the pure description of the facts, there is evidence of comprehensive and well-differentiated endeavours to examine the phenomenon from the scientific point of view, i.e. to find a natural explanation of a natural occurrence. Secondly: within that context, not only monocausal theories but also complex physical causal systems were developed, encompassing all of theearth's topographical areas - subterranean, epipolar, sublunar, lunar and side real. Third of all: as a rule, these explanation systems are integral elements of comprehensive methodological, philosophical and theological concepts which were regarded as pre-ordained laws, and from which the conceptions examined here were derived by a deductive nomological process. Fourthly: whereas in some cases problems were seen on the secular level with regard to the natural boundary between land and sea in flat coastal areas, the same does not seem to have played a role in the realm of religion, at least as far as we can tell from the sources. There is no mention of any crisis related to the conception of the jurisdictions of sea and land deities in the tideland areas because the Mediterranean was not particularly affected by the phenom enon physically. Fifthly: in the literary reflection on the tides on the southern coast of the North Sea as well as in the area of the Indus estuary, affective connotations of the natural phenomena are mirrored during a brief period. Associated with historical events and author-related projections, the tides here serve the purpose of describing psychological and cultural habitus of two figures considered at the time to be of great significance for world events. Sixthly and lastly: the concepts and conceptions of the tides could moreover serve as an instrument of the - at least latently negative - cultural-anthropological assessment of the groups of the population confronted with the phenomenon of the tides.
; The long term project »Enlightenment« is in full swing: the freedom to dissent, equality under public law, and solidarity with all the people from all over the world – these self-imposed development goals are widely accepted by all human beings. Since everything is exquisitely debated in a parliamentary democracy, this chatty form of government, citizens will of course exquisitely debate on how to achieve these goals. The negotiation process is conducted in and by public media, from Kant''s world of readers (»Leserwelt«) on to the hypermedia of the world wide web, the homo politicus uses cultural techniques like writing, image and number for his public display of reasoning. Informatics (and also computer science for that matter) is the study of designing information and communications technology and assessing it in all social respects; this dissertation focuses on the necessary conditions for the possibility of public reasoning. The Greek word τέχνη is translated as either craft or art, in this political context technē also means mindset, chain of ideas or algorithms. In this enquiry entitled »technē der Publizität«, we will visit places of the public, starting from the Greek »agora« via Victorian coffee houses to the contemporary locations of the networked public sphere. Technicians yield the power to enable or suppress public deliberation; in the so called Turing Galaxy, Informaticians have the responsibility to ensure the possibilities of the existence of an informed public. This thesis tries to accept this responsibility.
; Adrienne Thomas and her literary work is connected to her biography and the social and historical background. As Lorraine and Jewish she experiences the two world wars, different political systems, exile and restauration. At this point this paper wants to continue. Besides actual subjects there might be marks of narrative innovation. In generell in the work of the author can be found traditional figures and classical structures, which causes the classification to the popular literature. But even the popular literature can't withdraw from literary aesthetical innovations. The aim of this paper is, to find in a paradigmatical way in the work of Adrienne Thomas such kinds of innovativ traces in subjects and form. This poetical analysis drawn straight to the text, but it will connected to the biography and the social, historical, cultural and literary contexts, too. Important are also the special turning-points before, in or after exile. To deal with modern subjects in an innovative way there are the imaginations of women, female experience and way of acting evident. The protagonist, the narrator, the structur, time, place and language are examined as formal aspects. The works of contemporary philosophers or man of letters like Georg Lucács or Michail Bachtin or Richard Bamberger are important to show actual discussions about modern writing In the centre of all there is the so-called "little luck", which is in the reception the evidence for popular literature. It is contrasted to actual contents and modern formular aspects. The work of Adrienne Thomas is attached to non-canon literature, so the reviews of her romances have to be seen in connection with a selective perception and different measures of rating. Important for the analysis is the comparison with other romances of similar contents and composition, too, to appreciate the innovative performance of the romances of Adrienne Thomas. The discussion of popular literature is ended in the eigthies and it isn't started again. The popular literatur is alway seen in connection with the reception. It is important to show once more the fragile border between the serious and the popular literature because of the so-called "norm", which is produced by the literature system and contrasted to other kinds of literatures.
