; Tianhou temples and Catholic Church: changing religious architecture in Qing dynasty Hangzhou ;
; This thesis examines the urban history of Qing dynasty Hangzhou by closely analyzing the religious architecture of one Tianhou temple and one Catholic Church. This examination summarizes the evolution of these features and offers some thoughts on the influence that those changes made to social life and public spaces in Hangzhou. ; Apart from the introduction and conclusion, this thesis consists of four chapters. The introduction briefly reviews works Chinese urban history by scholars from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mainland China and abroad. It then surveys the types of historical material used in the project. In particular, it reviews the contributions in Susan Naquin's work on Beijing'stemples in Ming and Qing China as a major source of inspiration for the perspective taken in this work, as it draws upon Naquin's perspective on religious architecture as a part of a city's public space in order to combine an analysis on social life and urban history. ; The first chapter discusses the history of Hangzhou's administration and its political, economic, cultural and religious development in the Qing Dynasty. It then outlines the history of the locations and major changes to the Tianhou temples dedicated to the goddess Mazu throughout the city. ; The second chapter begins at the end of Ming Dynasty and ends in 1730. Over this period of time, Catholicism became more popular in Hangzhou, and people built a glamorous Catholic ...

Socio-political system and vernacular architectural forms: a study on tulou in China (1958--1983). ; CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection
; This dissertation is an interdisciplinary research on the socio-political system to explain the transformation of Chinese vernacular architecture within the context of tulou, an architectural form in Fujian Province, Southeastern China. I challenge the myth that tulou are Hakka clan houses or fortresses and argue that most tulou are affordable cooperative houses. I further suggest that these cooperatives were adapted to the People's Commune property system and hence, experienced construction peak from1958 to 1983. ; This dissertation examines the architectural form of tulou, the social structure of its proprietors, and the socio-political changes that occurred during China's socialist transformation. Chapter 1 opens with a review of the tulou literature, which also introduces a socio-political approach in studying Chinese vernacular architecture. In Chapter 2, I propose a set of symbolic expressions and models to analyze the property structure and spatial configuration of collective houses. The next three chapters engage in different perspectives of tulou built in the 1958-1983, including the architectural issues in Chapter 3, the social issues of the proprietors in Chapter 4, and the political issues in Chapter 5. Finally, the concluding chapter summarizes the contributions of the research. ; This research combines architectural analysis, anthropological ...

; Space, gender and social change: a case study of Hakka settlement in Meizhou, Guangdong ; 空間性別與社會變遷 ; 廣東梅州客家圍龍屋的個案研究 ; CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection ; Kong jian, xing bie yu she hui bian qian: Guangdong Meizhou Kejia wei long wu de ge an yan jiu. ; K...
; The weilong houses serve as the dwelling places for the Hakka people in Northeast Guangdong. Each weilong house contains elaborate spatial arrangements and a symbolic system that embodies the social order and gender relations of the Hakka. Space draws the boundaries between men and women in both the material and spiritual spheres, maintaining the gender structure of the Hakka society. During the collectivization period when the state reorganized the weilong house, women seized the opportunity to gain power for the control of village public space, and later they became religious leaders, even to the present. The economic reforms since 1978 have induced the villagers to leave the weilong house and move into new double-storey buildings, changing the family relations in the household. ; This research is a study of a weilong house in Meizhou, with focus on the daily practices of Hakka women. Taking into account of the history of the weilong house, its spatial structure and the changes in its social meanings, I seek to explore the production and reproduction of space in relation to women, tradition and the state, leading to a deeper understanding of the social-economic and political changes since 1949. The state achieved its rule through the re-arrangement of space, and the Hakka women use their agency to gain more living space under the state discourse, despite being constrained by traditional culture. Today, through market forces, state power has permeated all aspects of village life, transforming the power structure of the family thoroughly and enabling traditional culture to express in new ...

Application of urban climatic map to urban planning of high density cities: a case study of Hong Kong. ; CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection
; Urban climate is of great importance for the sustainable urban planning. However, urban climatic application has a low impact on urban planning. The Urban Climatic Map (UCMap) is a climatic information and evaluation tool to integrate urban climatic factors and town planning considerations by presenting climatic phenomena and problems on two-dimensional spatial maps. Literature reviews that the UCMap studies have been developed since the 1970s, but most UCMap studies focus on low density cities. Due to increasing urban population and rapid urbanization nowadays, compact living and high density city lives are inevitable trends around the world. This makes it an urgent issue to study how to apply UCMap to high density cities, such as Hong Kong. ; The study used meteorological data from Hong Kong Observatory and planning data from Planning Department of the Government of Hong Kong SAR. Based on the climatic analysis from the Urban Climatic Analysis Map and Wind Information Layer, this study developed an Urban Climatic Recommendation Map (UC-ReMap) and formulated key planning recommendations for Hong Kong, which could then be applied at the level ...
