Two Congolese artists in São Paulo, Yannick Delass e Shambuyi Wetu encounter each other in performances that we record and recreate.
This article presents some aspects of the work of the British researcher Tony Bennett (1988, 1998, 2008, 2011) about cultural policy and artistic field. The author adopts Foucault's (2016) concept on governmentality and suggests the encounter between post-Kantian aesthetics and liberal thought at the end of the eighteenth century allowed for the arts and cultures to be understood as a governmental field. This trend can be seen in the development of cultural policies, particularly those starting from the middle of the twentieth century, and, more recently, in the spread of the concept of creative economy. We further elaborate on Foucault's thought, especially on entrepreneurship and human capital. The hypothesis is that one of the factors that transforms art circuits into a matter of concern in contemporary society is the manner how artists invest their own life into artistic production. Interest groups are multiplied and struggle for better work conditions and public policies. On the other hand, networks run the risk of limiting themselves to their own circuits, thus fragmenting the cultural field. The challenge is to turn art and culture into a common good, which is part of the population's daily life.

In: Revista Maracanan, Heft 24, S. 115-148
The starting point of this article is the realization of "Primeira Exposição Fotográfica de Motivos Belorizontinos", exhibition organized in 1953 through the partnership of a collective of amateur photographers and the Municipality of Belo Horizonte. Our interest is to understand how the vision of the amateur photographer is directed to the city, what is their reach, their conditioning and of course, what images result from this association. In this regard, we need to analyse the photography in parallel to other cultural initiatives supported by the government in the period, as well if it is possible to associate the pictures with a specific political project. The discussion around the exhibition from 1953 would also approach the universe of political propaganda, the relationship between architecture, government and urban life, and questions connected to the visual culture and cultural circularity.
Philip Guston e o apelo da historia
In: Relações internacionais: R:I, Heft 5, S. 183-186
ISSN: 1645-9199
This is a brief overview of the career of the Canadian-born, American abstract expressionist painter Philip Guston. The discussion begins by contextualizing Guston's work within the era in art history in which he painted, with particular attention given to issues pertaining to the Cold War. Guston began as a social realist but gradually evolved into an abstract artist, a development which the article carefully tracks. Guston is presented as an artist who was particularly touched by the times in which he lived, as his work was informed by domestic & international issues as diverse as the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, the Great Depression, the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, & the Vietnam War. The discussion concludes with a summation of Guston's universal tragic sense. R. Young

In: Novos estudos CEBRAP, Heft 82, S. 167-178
ISSN: 1980-5403

In: Relacoes Internacionais, Heft 4, S. 147-150
This is a critical appraisal of the work of Albrecht Altdorfer, as seen within the context of his painting depicting Alexander the Great's victory at the Battle of Issus. While the case can certainly be made that Altdorfer is notable for being the first European painter to compose independent landscapes, he is every bit as notable for belonging to two distinct schools of painting simultaneously, the stylistically distinct schools of Flanders & Italy. After placing Altdorfer within these contexts, the article uses his Issus landscape as a springboard for a discussion of the nexus between art & politics in his work. The discussion concludes with an overview of the critical reception of Altdorfer's work through the centuries. R. Young
