Public opinion as reported by polls can be misleading when it concerns issues about which the general public knows or cares little. On such issues the views of those most interested or involved deserve special attention. Survey data show that those who follow the news about a particular issue or issue area very closely—the "attentive public"—differ in personal characteristics and often in their opinions from both the general public and from the best-educated. Further, opinions of the attentive public are often better informed and more predictive of policy trends than are the views of the general public. By reporting attentive public opinion separately, pollsters can encourage policy makers to pay greater attention to it.

In this autoethnography, I examine silence and its role in the communication world. I believe silence is especially worthy of investigation in a networked world that is at least somewhat devoid of opportunities to pause. In this way, I hope this short paper helps other scholars take up fuller consideration of silence as an active element within and beyond the communication world.

This article describes a first-day, in-class exercise that has worked to elevate student awareness of the importance of attentive listening to achieving interpersonal success. Small groups of students answer one of six questions about the impact of the listener's behavior on speakers, and class discussion revolves around their answers. Students learn how important it is to consciously manage listening behavior. This exercise is also an outstanding springboard for introducing topics the professor will discuss later in the semester, including supporting, coaching, disciplining, interviewing, and team building.

Three-dimensional virtual environments and teleoperation activities depend on the ability to position an egocentric viewpoint at meaningful locations. Evidence from foundational research has led to the development of control strategies that generally adopt an all-or-nothing approach to guiding the viewer to useful vistas. This work examines attentive navigation, a technique for partially automating viewpoint control to promote a supportive yet unscripted exploration of a virtual environment. A collection of three experiments was designed to assess the effectiveness of attentive navigation versus commonly used free navigation techniques. Results show that this approach has promising consequences for improving object recognition, developing an understanding of the configuration of objects, and searching for target objects. Actual or potential applications of this research include improved interaction techniques for extracting information from visual representations, virtual environments, and teleoperation experiences.

A main reason for the slow advance of a political theory of care is the conceptual differences between two strands of approaching care. Ethico-political approaches of care ask how to better perform supportive interactivities. They aim to bring the traditional concept of justice out of the centre to achieve room for other normative viewpoints such as attentiveness. The welfare-resourcing strand asks who provides support and how the fact of its performance is linked with society's unjust social structures. These researchers believe that making attentive interaction more central is likely to hinder a fairer distribution of needs-meeting activities, not help it.

Abstract
Multiple object tracking (MOT) involves simultaneous tracking of a certain number of target objects amongst a larger set of objects as they all move unpredictably over time. The prevalent explanation for successful target tracking by humans in MOT involving visually identical objects is based on the Visual Indexing Theory. This assumes that each target is indexed by a pointer using a non-conceptual mechanism to maintain an object's identity even as its properties change over time. Thus, successful tracking requires successful indexing and the absence of identification errors. Identity maintenance and successful tracking are measured in terms of identification (ID) and tracking accuracy respectively, with higher accuracy indicating better identity maintenance or better tracking. Existing evidence suggests that humans have high tracking accuracy despite poor identification accuracy, suggesting that it might be possible to perform MOT without indexing. Our work adds to existing evidence for this position through two experiments, and presents a computational model of multiple object tracking that does not require indexes. Our empirical results show that identification accuracy is aligned with tracking accuracy in humans for tracking up to three, but is lower when tracking more objects. Our computational model of MOT without indexing accounts for several empirical tracking accuracy patterns shown in earlier studies, reproduces the dissociation between tracking and identification accuracy produced earlier in the literature as well as in our experiments, and makes several novel predictions.

This paper shares methodological insights from our research which sought to centre children in the production of knowledge during the 2020 global pandemic to consider how this can inform research with children beyond the crisis. Drawing on our longitudinal participatory arts-based research with 30 children aged 9–12 during 2020–22, the paper illustrates our response to the shifting research landscape which included navigating social restrictions to develop child-centred ways of working with socially distanced arts-based methods and technologies. The paper sets out key principles focused on foregrounding children's ways of knowing and attentive seeing which underpinned our reframing of the research encounter from one in which adults are intent on extracting children's ready-made thoughts to a space in which knowledge generation is recognised as a process of co-construction and engagement with children. Central to this process is our commitment to feminist care ethics and the application of principles from early childhood research and pedagogy which prioritise attentiveness to younger children's rhythms and pace. Our aim, in setting out an approach which makes a space for playfulness with older children, is to elaborate the potential of slower, attentive methods and to offer a methodological framework to address to wider questions about what arts-based methods do.
