The aim of this article is to contrast an empirical study on the changes in the attitudes & behaviors of local politicians with recent literature on local governance. To undertake this task, the article brings together the result of more than 200 in-depth interviews with local councilors from nine Catalan local councils over two different periods of time: 1986-87 & 1998-99. Through comparison with the results of the interviews carried out, the work confirms a tendency towards change which, with few slight adjustments, can be made to fit with those academic contributions which claim the appearance of certain strategic, pluralistic & relational styles of government. This research evaluated the behavior of 343 people (chosen at random) from the citiesof Apizaco and Huamantla (Tlaxcala State, Mexico). Individuals were chosen from1600 families and a total population of 8000 citizens.This study is one component of a broader, in-depth research that links all the resultsof its branches/fields to strengthen them. The aim of this research is to change the waydomestic wastes is handled thanks to various influential strategies and social"persuasion". The first step to devise solutions to wastes' problem is not to createthem initially. This becomes true when citizens separate their wastes for re-use in theproduction process.The study assesses attitudes towards garbage and garbage collection. The pre-testresearch also uses other instruments/tools concerning population's way of life, whichis known as "social frame" of the population. Secondary research (post-test) will beutilized to evaluate change in behaviors after the use of persuasive strategies.The population already has environment-friendly behavior, however these are verybasic (from 0 to 1). We assume that campaigns to protect environment, the position ofthe government and other groups stressed the importance of environment to thepopulation but not enough to be an end in itself. We do not see major/significativedifferences according to population and communities characteristics. Cuban-Americans are changing their attitudesabout many of the key components of current US/Cuba policy. The paper explores some of the socialforces creating the patterns associated with thechanging attitudes. Based on the data from the2014 Cuba Poll, a descriptive analysis ofrelationships among key demographic variablesuncovers compelling patterns associated with theideological shift occurring in the population.Specifically, the patterns associated with ideologyshifts and time of arrival of the migrant aswell as his/her age and political party preferenceare explored. The paper makes clear that the newarrivals to Miami, as well as the younger Cubans,are significantly more interested in normalizingrelations with the home country. Unfortunately, alarge majority of the new arrivals (migrating since1995), are not citizens and therefore not able toparticipate in the electoral processes that shapeU.S. policy towards the island.Los cubano-americanos están cambiando susactitudes acerca de muchos de los componentesclave de la política actual de Estados Unidos haciaCuba. A model for the formation & change of stereotypes is described, which explains four characteristics of stereotypes. (1) A stereotype for a specific group is unique. Macrosocial background variables (the history & nature of intergroup relations & politico-social & economic conditions) impact this characteristic. (2) Within each group, members differ in relations to the stereotype for an outgroup. Personal mediating variables (unique personal experiences & personal differences in personality, motivation, values, & cognitive abilities) affect this characteristic. (3) Individuals acquire stereotypes throughout their lives. The transmitting variables (political/social/cultural/educational mechanisms, family channels, & direct contact) provide variation in acquisition. (4) Stereotypes can change in individuals & groups. This work analyzes the characteristics of the resistance to the processes of change through the following conditions: the school is the change unit, it's necessary people concerned with the change, those agents need autonomy and power, it's necessary an internal engine that moves the processes; the change depends more on the initiatives, the work of the teachers and headmaster that of the legislative reform; and the school is possible that it improves if is able to leam itself. In this revision it prevails what it happens about attitudes when such conditions do not take place. The attitudes have sense in their integration in the school cultures. ; Este trabajo analiza las características de las resistencias a los procesos de cambio a través de las siguientes condiciones: el centro educativo es la unidad de cambio, que para que éste ocurra son necesarias personas concernidas con el mismo, que esos agentes necesitan autonomía y poder, que es necesario un motor interno que dinamice los procesos; que el cambio depende más de las iniciativas, el trabajo de los profesores y de la dirección escolar que de la reforma legislativa; y que el centro educativo es posible que mejore si es capaz de aprender de sí mismo. En esta revisión prevalece qué ocurre con las actitudes de los profesores cuando no se producen tales condiciones y se establece que las actitudes hacia el cambio tienen sentido entendidas desde su integración en el seno de las culturas escolares.
Since present levels and types of consumption are not environmentally sustainable, consumers need to become more sensitive to environmental issues and to the political implications of their behavior. This paper traces factors affecting green consumerism in several areas: clothing, transportation, food and management of household waste. Green consumerism is a complex phenomenon that is influenced on the collective level by social movements, boycotts, and government legislation and on the individual level by social class, income, education and life style. Most studies which examine the relationship between specific attitudes toward green consumption and behavior reveal discrepancies between attitudes and behavior. The attitude/behavior gap can be explained by the fact that green consumerism is most strongly associated with a specific, middle class life style and is not a widespread phenomenon. ; Puesto que los actuales niveles y modos de consumo no son ambientalmente sostenibles, los consumidores necesitan concienciarse de las cuestiones medioambientales y de las implicaciones políticas de sus prácticas. Este artículo rastrea algunos elementos que afectan al denominado "consumo verde" en varias áreas: vestido, transporte, alimento y gestión doméstica. El consumo ecológico es un fenómeno complejo, con influencias en el ámbito societal de movimientos sociales, boicots o legislación gubernamental, y en el plano individual presenta influencias de la clase social, los ingresos, la educación o el estilo de vida. La mayoría de los estudios que han examinado la relación entre actitudes específicas ante este tipo de consumo y el comportamiento real de los consumidores, revelan inconsistencias entre tales actitudes y las conductas. Esta discrepancia entre actitud y comportamiento puede explicarse por el hecho de que el consumo verde está fuertemente asociado a un específico estilo de vida, el de las clases medias, más que tratarse de un fenómeno de difusión generalizada.
The decline of utopia in some western intellectual environments has become an object of interest for scientists and essayists in these last few years. Yet, little has been done to analyze the common sense production of utopias or dystopias. This article will make use of the results of a statistical survey (n=2774) to describe what can be called, in reference to Wittgenstein's philosophy, «the grammars of change», i.e., a more or less shared representation of «what is wrong» with society, but also of the real or illusionary possibilities to transform society. The article focuses on a striking line of tension. While some people still value political action as the bearer of a possible change, most interviewees consider it obsolete and unreliable. These people, who are so skeptical about politics, tend on the contrary to (over)invest in the idea that the power of change lies within the individual, in everybody's changing their own values and attitudes.
La actual crisis económica ha comportado un deterioro del mercado de trabajo en muchos países europeos, lo que ha estimulado la extensión de actitudes anti-inmigrantes entre la población. Estas actitudes anti-inmigratorias se localizan fundamentalmente en los segmentos bajos del mercado de trabajo, aquellos de baja cualificación y de bajos salarios. En este artículo exploramos las actitudes de los ciudadanos europeos hacia los trabajadores inmigrantes. En particular tratamos de analizar que papel juega la incertidumbre socioeconómica en la conformación de las actitudes. Para ello comparamos los datos de las encuestas de los años 2002, 2008 y 2010 proporcionados por la Encuesta Social Europea para 17 países. Los resultados ponen de relieve la existencia de un cierto cambio de las actitudes entre ambos periodos. Las actitudes hacia la inmigración están condicionadas por tres tipos de variables: socio-económicas, ideológico-políticas y contextuales. El análisis de regresión logística pone de relieve el fuerte papel que juega la ideología izquierda versus derecha como predictor de las actitudes. Finalmente, el análisis de correspondencias múltiples nos ha permitido clasificar a los países estudiados según sus actitudes hacia la inmigración. ; The recent economic crisis has brought an unprecedented deterioration in labour market conditions in many European countries. This may have provided new stimulus for the extension of anti-immigrant attitudes amongst population, especially amongst those in the lower segments of labour markets. In this paper we analyze the attitudes of European citizens towards immigration and migrant workers. In particular, we try to understand what role plays perceived socio-economic uncertainty in order to explain attitudes towards immigration. Comparing data of the 2002, 2008 y 2010 waves of European Social Survey for sixteen European countries, the paper shows no remarkable change in the relative importance of objective and subjective socio-economic variables between the period of growth and recession. Moreover, logistic analysis consistently shows political-ideology to be a strong predictor of attitudes. Finally, multiple correspondence analyses allowed us to classify the countries surveyed according to their attitudes towards immigration.
