After World War I, membership in the League of Nations represented an important step for the British Dominions on the road to foreign policy independence. The internationalism of the League of Nations was not a purely political phenomenon, but also had a social dimension. In particular, the Geneva based Secretariat of the League of Nations evolved into a hub of liberal internationalism. Benjamin Auberer examines these networks by investigating the careers of five employees of the League of Nations from Australia and New Zealand and thus contributes to a global history of the League of Nations and its bureaucracy.
At least 15,000 Australians died as a result of the so-called 'Spanish Flu' between 1918 and 1920. The administrative strategies for containment remained primarily the responsibility of the government authorities – successes and failures in fighting the pandemic correlated with the degree of harmonization between medical advice, official rules and civic responsibility. Dr. John Howard L. Cumpston who in 1921 became the first Australian Director-General of the Department of Health created a large volume of press cuttings on the influenza epidemic. This set 'appears to have been collected for use in the preparation of a series of official pamphlets'. Today, this press kit sheds light on Australia's contemporary view of the 'Spanish Flu'. The following analysis illustrates Australia's response to the spread of the virus (also with regard to the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic after exactly 100 years) under the aspects of collective action and individual denial – without arguing for a historical analogy.

Mit entsprechender Werbung versuchte man die neuen EinwandererInnen möglichst gut zu verkaufen.sss ; Migration from Austria to Australia between 1947 and 1978 is based on research in the Austrian Archives "Archiv der Republik" und "Archiv des Innenministeriums" and the Australian National Archive in Canberra as well as on the method "Oral History" and Interviews with migrants itself in Australia and Austria. After World War II Austria hast to deal with refugees, which got stuck in Austria from different parts of Europe, named Displaced Persons and Volksdeutsche, etc.Two big international organisations organized Migration hand in hand withe the Australian and Austrian Governement: The IRO (International Refugee Organisation) and the ICEM (International Cometee for European Migration). For the Austrian government emigration was a solution for its refugee problem. The Australian Government wanted to increase its population with immigration. 'White Australian policy' was finished and the "Assisted Passage Scheme" was born also for non british migrants. For this new migration policy they had to"sell" the new migrants to the Australian people: for this English-language teaching, welfare programs for migrants, public relationscampaigns favouring ethnic tolerance, etc. were organized. Australia not only needed to increase its poulation but also hat to find skilled workers for the expansion of its manufacturing industries. Therfore Australian migration officers were looking to recruit skilled workers in Austria. Many Austrians were looking for a better income and a higher lifestandard and were also attracted by the promotion of he Australian migration authorities. In this sense Austria and Australia had varying understanding of migration in general. ; eingereicht von Astrid Tumpold-Juri ; Graz, Univ., Diss., 2008 ; OeBB ; (VLID)205663

Papua New Guinea (PNG) stretches eastward on the huge, bird-shaped island of New Guinea, which lies north of Australia. After British and German colonial rule, followed by Australian administration, PNG achieved independence in 1975. PNG inherited the Westminster Model of parliamentary democracy, and it is among the few countries of the Third World in which democratic patterns persisted without interruption or serious threat despite some social and political problems. Free elections are not the only, but an essential criterion for a functioning democratic system. The first free national election in PNG's postcolonial history was held in 1977. In 1997, about 3.2 million Papua New Guineans participated in the fifth parliamentary election since independence. With reference to the 1997 election this essay outlines the cultural, social, and political issues that accompany the realisation of democratic principles in PNG.

; This diploma thesis deals with the locating of the Stolen Generations in the collective memory of Australia. At the time of colonisation the settlers considered the native people of Australia as inferior ethnicity. Towards the end of the 19th century, this posture has led to the period of protectionism in Australia, which excluded the Aborigines and the Torres Strait Islanders from the society. Since the 1930s it came to forcible child removals of 'transracial children to deprive them of the indigenous influence, due to the assimilation policy. The children were put into state institutions and later on integrated into the 'white society. The separation of the children from their parents and the defamation of their identity has led to grand internal conflicts within the victims. This could have serious consequences, which often manifest on a mental level. This practice lasted till the late 1970s and got tabooed by the rest of the Australian population. The failure of addressing the past has also led to ongoing discrimination of the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders in many areas of life. As of the 1990s Australia began to address the past issues on a private and a public level. The Australian government apologised officially and the affected Aborigines started to tell their stories. Movies got produced, biographies published and the Stolen Generations got also mentioned in poems and songs. That step into the public eye was very important for the Stolen Children, so they could start to process their traumatic experiences from their childhood without fighting against the silencing of the collective body. This part of history had to get processed so the past events could get installed in the collective memory of the Australian society and prevent further discrimination against the Indigenous people of Australia. The growing relevance of the Stolen Generations in movies, music and literature will be addressed in this academic work and their influence on the refinement process in Australia will be examined. ; vorgelegt von Marie Sumper ; Abweichender Titel laut Übersetzung des Verfassers/der Verfasserin ; Zusammenfassungen in Deutsch und Englisch ; Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Diplomarbeit, 2017 ; (VLID)2046936
