Der Beitrag dokumentiert die Diskussion auf der "Author Meets Critic"-Veranstaltung zu John Urrys "Sociology Beyond Societies" auf dem 32. Kongress der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie (2004). Zunächst erläutert Urry den Grundgedanken seines Ansatzes, der auf eine Aufhebung der Trennung zwischen Naturwissenschaften und Gesellschaftswissenschaften hinausläuft. Unter dem Leitbild "Komplexität" wird die Analyse physischer und sozialer Welten integriert. Dabei werden auch Elemente von Hardt/Negris "Empire und Multitude"-Konzept aufgegriffen. Der Begriff der Globalen Komplexität steht auch im Mittelpunkt der Kommentare von Junge und Schwengel zu Urrys Buch. (ICE)

Questionnaire data derived from the 1995 module of the International Social Survey Program are drawn on to examine two dimensions of nationalist attitudes -- chauvinism & patriotism -- in 22 countries. Patriotism is the feeling of pride in one's people & country but with a critical understanding that can allow for other viewpoints & other peoples. Chauvinism, on the other hand, denotes blind acceptance of one's country & people as unique & superior. This latter, negative form of nationalism is likely to promote rejection of ethnic outgroups. Varying degrees of these two nationalist attitudes were found among the 22 countries, theorized to be mediated by ethnic competition, localistic orientation, contextual characteristics, & perceived ethnic threat. Cross-national analyses indicate a distinction between a country's patriotic vs chauvinistic nationalist attitudes in determining acceptance of ethnic outgroups. Tables, Figures. J. Stanton

In this work, we address the problem of blocking in the context of author name disambiguation. We describe a framework that formalizes different ways of name-matching to determine which names could potentially refer to the same author. We focus on name variations that follow from specifying a name with different completeness (i.e. full first name or only initial). We extend this framework by a simple way to define traditional, new and custom blocking schemes. Then, we evaluate different old and new schemes in the Web of Science. In this context we define and compare a new type of blocking schemes. Based on these results, we discuss the question whether name-matching can be used in blocking evaluation as a replacement of annotated author identifiers. Finally, we argue that blocking can have a strong impact on the application and evaluation of author disambiguation.

This chapter considers whether strong positive attitudes toward the ethnic ingroup of a given nation are related to strong exclusionist reactions to ethnic outgroups, a phenomenon defined as ethnocentrism or chauvinistic nationalism. The presence of this relation is comparatively examined among 22 countries, based on 1990s survey data. The primary aim is to discern whether the extent to which various dimensions of nationalist attitudes were related to various dimensions of exclusionist reactions differed systematically by socioeconomic population group & country, or whether these interrelations were universal & invariant, both within & across countries. The findings indicate a relatively strong relation between chauvinistic nationalism & resistance to immigrants, & this relation appears to be universal. Tables. J. Stanton

Massive waves of migrants fleeing poverty & refugees fleeing war have had a considerable effect on receiving countries. Focus here is on the emergence of latent resistance in 22 countries (based on 1995 survey data) to the influx of migrants, manifested in the negative attitudes & exclusionist reactions of their citizens toward the foreigners: the more citizens with negative attitudes, the greater the public support for immigration restriction. In a cross-country examination of this situation, a distinction is drawn between economic immigrants & refugees in search of safety. Various theories, especially those of ethnic competition or threat & localist orientation, support the findings that ethnic majority individuals who were less educated, self-employed, poorly employed (manual labor), unemployed, & poor were more likely to feel negatively toward immigrants in general, though attitudes were far less negative toward refugees than economic migrants. The aim of this article is to find in the pages of the national magazine Revista 22, reflections of the minority issue - in this case the targeted subject being the condition of Jewish minority of Romania in the country or emigrated abroad (as for instance Israel). The article brings into discussion also reflections of Jews in Europe. The method of work is the critical interpretations of articles combined with a descriptive analysis of their content. Our conclusion leads to the fact that there is a small, active community of Jews in Romania represented at the political level as a minority community, pursuing specific interests who cherishes the memory of Holocaust and wants to say the truth about it, having important ties and connections with the Romanian Jews from Israel and being directly interested in maintaining Jewish interests in Israel. At European level, the problems, existing with the inner states minorities, are amplified by waves of migrations coming from Asia. The conclusion is that the Revista 22 brings a lot of information about the Jewish minority from Romania, resolving the historical issue of saying the truth about the Holocaust, but, as a recommendation, I suggest to bring more fresh news and periodically about Israel, as a vivid center of religions, that concerns European Union and its citizens.

"Angesichts der gegenwärtigen weltweiten Rezession ist das Interesse am Phänomen der Kondratieff-Zyklen wieder stark belebt worden. Trotz einer intensiven wissenschaftlichen Diskussion und zahlreicher empirischer Analysen besteht bis heute kein Konsens in der Frage der Realität solcher Zyklen. Zwar zeigen sich in vielen ökonomischen Indikatorenreihen Trendschwankungen, doch es ist sowohl in der theoretischen wie der statistischen Forschung ungeklärt, ob sich diese Schwankungen mit einer angebbaren Regelmäßigkeit wiederholen. Die Nichtlösbarkeit des Problems in der bisherigen Forschung ist einmal auf das Fehlen geeigneter Datenreihen zurückzuführen, zum anderen auf den Umstand, daß kein brauchbares statistisches Verfahren für eine gegenstandsneutrale Untersuchung zur Verfügung stand. Die zunächst mit hohen Erwartungen eingesetzte Spektralanalyse wird neuerdings mit Recht starker methodischer Kritik unterzogen; denn der in allen ökonomischen Zeitreihen vorhandene Trend macht eine informative Spektralanalyse unmöglich, da diese immer ein Ergebnis liefert, dessen Form bereits Granger als 'typical spectral shape of an economic variable' bezeichnet hat. Ein spektralanalytischer Nachweis langer Wellen erfordert daher immer die vorherige Trendbereinigung der Zeitreihe. Diese exakte Trendbereinigung gelang bislang nicht. Entweder wurden die langen Wellen mit dem Trend ausgefiltert oder es waren die Auswirkungen der Trendbereinigung im Frequenzbereich nicht überprüfbar, so daß immer offen blieb, ob eventuell ausgewiesene lange Schwingungen erst durch das Verfahren erzeugt wurden (Slutzky-Effekt). Die Nichtüberprüfbarkeit der Hypothese von der Existenz langer Wellen war insgesamt ein sehr unbefriedigender Zustand. Ein völlig neuer Weg zur Lösung dieser Frage besteht darin, Zeitreihenanalyse als Filter-Design-Problem zu begreifen und sich methodisch ganz vom klassischen Komponentenmodell zu lösen. Einer Arbeitsgruppe um Prof. Stier in Bochum ist es gelungen, Filter zu konstruieren, die jene scharfen Trenneigenschaften aufweisen, mit denen das Problem der langen Wellen optimal angegangen werden kann. Der Schlüssel liegt in der Kombination dieser neuen rekursiven Filter mit der Spektralanalyse. Damit lassen sich, über die Intention bisheriger Arbeiten hinausgehend, Form und Lage von Langfristzyklen in der historischen Zeitdimension erstmals darstellen. Das Verfahren wurde auf verschiedene Zeitreihen (Preisserien, Produktions- und Lohndaten) angewandt. Von den z. T. überraschenden Ergebnissen seien nur einige kurz skizziert: Langfristzyklen sind in allen untersuchten Reihen nachweisbar. Allerdings zeigt sich der typische Kondratieff-Zyklus nur in Preisreihen. Produktionsreihen weisen eindeutig kürzerfristige Zyklen auf, die vielleicht dem Typ der Kuznets-Zyklen zuzuordnen sind, wahrscheinlich aber einen neuen Typus langer Wellen darstellen. Die mit Hilfe der Spektralanalyse diagnostizierten Zyklen-Typen erfahren allerdings bei der Darstellung in der historischen Zeit wesentliche Modifikationen. Von Zyklus zu Zyklus ändert sich nicht nur die jeweilige Zyklenlänge, sondern auch die Dauer der Auf- und Abschwungsphasen. Hinzu kommt, daß die Amplitudenausschläge deutliche Unterschiede zwischen vorindustrieller und industrieller Zeit aufzeigen. Vergleichsuntersuchungen mit deflationierten Preisreihen haben gezeigt, daß eine schwankende Geldwertstabilität nicht Ursache dieser Zyklen sein kann, sondern nur den Trend beeinflußte. Die als Trend ausgefilterten nicht-periodischen Schwingungen zeigen keinen gleichmäßig linearen, sondern einen wellenförmigen Verlauf. Ob es sich bei diesem Phänomen um ein methodenbedingtes Ergebnis handelt, muß vorerst offen bleiben." (Autorenreferat)

Between 1990 and 2015, the annual global amount of CO2 emission generated by transport has increased by 68%, from around 4.6 GtCO 2 to around 7.7 GtCO2 Technological advances towards eco friendly vehicles and policy incentives promoting environmental friendly modes of transport have thus been offset by economic growth and increa sing mobility. This study questions the relationship between economic growth
and sustainability performance of transport sector. It adds to the literature new insights concerning recent trends in the relationship between gross domestic product and various aspects of transport sustainability such as carbon footprint, carbon intensity and
transport safety. A particular attention is given to discussing the emerging issues of "carbon inequality" and the role of political entities that contribute most to global CO2 emissions, such China, USA and the EU. Finally, this study adds to the literature a
composite index of transport sustainability performance and explores between country inequalities in terms of sustainability performance.
