Since the end of the Cultural Revolution, the Chinese economy has grown very rapidly. Much of this economic growth is accounted for by the very rapid expansion in agricultural production following the introduction in 1978 of the Production Responsibility System. The author examines the question whether the emergence of an agricultural trade surplus in the PRC (in 1984 and 1985 its agricultural exports exceeded its agricultural imports for the first time in recent history) is a short-term aberration or a long-term structural change. The recent and perspective trends in China's grain, livestock and sugar markets are analysed, using a global dynamic simulation model of those markets. (DÜI-Sen)

After summarizing the changing directions of Australia's trade, the authors look at the country's rapid trade growth with developing countries over the 1970s. It is shown that all of the growth with developing countries has been with the Middle East, East Asia and ASEAN. The growth of GDP in East Asia and the increasing importance of this region in world trade - reasons for Australia's trade growth with East Asia. (DÜI-Sen)

During the last twenty years it has become clear, that the European Community and East Asia both are pursuing protectionist agricultural policies. This trend is likely to increase. Since such a policy reduces the efficiency of the world food economy, this study aims at unveiling the reasons behind it. The different papers work on the following aspects: the relative magnitudes of the trade and welfare effects of agricultural policies in East Asia and Western Europe, including the consequences for Australian farm incomes; Japan's beef trade; implications for agricultural trade of China's recent economic growth and policy reforms. In East and Southeast Asia there has been a steady rise of the level of agricultural protection. Notwithstanding this increasingly protectionist policy stance, food imports into the region have been growing rapidly. This paper seeks to explain these trends and to quantify the likely importance of East and Southeast Asia in international food trade through to 1990 by using a dynamic simulation model of world grain and meat markets.
