The Liberty of the Italian City in the Late Middle Ages: Some Reflections ; Le libertà delle città italiane nel tardo medioevo: qualche riflessione
The history of liberty in Italian cities of the late Middle Ages is confronted with a "great narrative" describing the political experience of cities with a communal tradition as an extraordinary experience of republican liberty, based on some solid assumptions: firstly, that the Communes had been a full expression of the citizens' liberty; secondly that factional struggle had led them into a crisis; and finally that lordly regimes had meant the end of liberty and paved the way for the foreign invasions of the late fifteenth century. The central paradigm of this "great narrative of liberty" is the identification of the political experience of Italian cities of communal tradition with the republican political system. However, this assumption seems to be a pre-understanding not supported by documentary evidence. A new research on libertates in late medieval Italian cities, freed from this enormous ideological burden, is required in order to understand the variety of meanings of the premodern concept of liberty, mainly focused on the claim of freedom as absence of dependence and/ or an arbitrary political regime. The methodological starting point is a return to the documentary sources in order to analyse the language used in them, a language which shows that the notion of liberty in Italian cities between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries takes a huge variety of meanings and declinations.

Dante tra i Bianchi e i Neri ; Dante between White Party and Black Party

Particularly reffering to the digital work named Atlante della documentazione comunale, the research centered on the series of council decisions books, the only ones (among those produced before 1343) that survived until nowadays in a continuous form, and was focused upon legislation regarding Florentine magnates. This matter turned out to be an excellent perspective allowing to reconstruct the communal normative system, that in Florence got a crucial qualitative leap in the development of all its political and cultural potentialities at the time when new "popolo" government took the power, in 1280's.

Evaluation of the morphological quality index in the Cordevole river (Bl, Italy)
The European Union (EU) Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC), which came into force in Italy under Decree Law no. 152 of 3rd April 2006, has as its objectives the protection and improvement of aquatic ecosystem status, promoting the sustainable use of water resources and mitigating the effects of floods and droughts. According to this Directive, the ecological classification of a watercourse should be considered in addition to physical-chemical and biological aspects of its hydromorphological condition, in order to define the deviation of the present condition from a pre-defined reference state. The Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research has promoted a methodology called IDRAIM for the hydromorphological analysis of streams. This is an integrated approach aimed at implementing both WFD and EU Flood Directives (2007/60/EC). In this paper, we describe the application of the morphological quality index (MQI) protocol, which is part of the IDRAIM, used for evaluating the morphological quality of the Cordevole River, Province of Belluno, northeastern Italy. General settings and segmentation of the water network through the use of semi-automatic GIS techniques were presented. The MQI data derived from the application of 28 indicators in 42 reaches were then analysed. Most (48%) of the analysed reaches have a good quality status; 38% have a moderate quality status and poor morphological conditions (14%) are due to the presence of artificial elements and to the limited connectivity between hill-slopes and the river corridor.

Conflitti, paci e vendette nell'Italia comunale
In: Reti Medievali E-Book
This book is a collection of seven essays with an introduction by the editor. The contributions propose first-hand studies of some of the less researched aspects of the history of the Italian communes: the practices of conflict, vendetta and pacification. The variety of different ways of resolving conflicts brought to light by the studies for the various civic and rural contexts (Mantua, Parma, Pisa, Lucca, Florence and the Valdinievole), between the beginning of the thirteenth and the mid fourteenth century, indicate how normal such social relations were, the widespread nature of the feud and the legitimisation and centrality of the culture of the vendetta within the political arena of the commune. The book hence offers a precious contribution for a review of the prevalent narration of the vendetta in late mediaeval Italian society.

This book proposes a series of studies devoted to one of the most important areas of political and institutional history, that of the relations between the political dimension and the exercise of justice. Centred on the experience of Florence, but open to comparison with that of other parts of Italy, the investigation brings to light how, in the transformation of the political framework of the age of the Comune to that of the territorial State between the thirteenth and the fifteenth centuries, in the relations between the powers active in the territory the sphere of justice offered scope for debate and political competition as well as leverage for legitimisation. One of the intentions of the book is, in fact, to contribute to revising the concept of justice, going beyond the traditional vision of public function and an aspect of the progressive affirmation of the State.
