Introducing the Person into Thinking about Social Policies
In: International journal of peace studies, Band 6, Heft 1, S. 45-49
ISSN: 1085-7494
Proposes introducing the individual person into thinking about conflict resolution & concomitant policy, arguing that a focus on the individual would allow barriers between disciplines to break down. Conflict resolution in general is based on the idea that a whole person & his or her environment must be considered for any resolution to be found. A shift in thinking about human needs is advocated, stating that we must educate ourselves out of adversarial behaviors & promote cooperation. Such an ideal system would begin by teaching students how to think, question, & engage in dialogue rather than learning by rote. Only then can we move to address such pressing problems as population increase, resource depletion, & environmental damage. 6 References. J. Backman
Peace Begins at Home. International Conflict: A Domestic Responsibility
In: International journal of peace studies, Band 6, Heft 1, S. 3-9
ISSN: 1085-7494
Engages the subject of international conflict, examining power politics & international relations in pursuit of a theory that explains the power of human needs. To approach such a theory, Burton examines the nature of conflict as opposed to disagreement & concludes that some human need will be pursued regardless of cost or consequence. If something is to be done about conflict, there has to be decision-making processes leading to problem-solving policy. It is concluded that domestic policies must cater to human developmental need to achieve domestic harmony. 5 References. J. Backman
Where Do We Go from Here?
In: International journal of peace studies, Band 6, Heft 1, S. 69-73
ISSN: 1085-7494
Challenges the fundamental assumption that political systems require that the individuals within flex to the power-elite structure in light of a critical emergence of problems. There is seen a current trend in which governments are handing management of society over to the market. The major pratfalls of such escapist policies are noted. An alternative legal process centered on conflict analysis & resolution & problem-solving is advocated. Human needs are paramount, thus the sources of social problems must be targeted. 7 References. Disappearing Savages? Thoughts on the Construction of an Anthropological Conundrum
In: Journal of Asian and African studies: JAAS, Band 34, Heft 2, S. 199-209
ISSN: 1745-2538
From its birth as an amateur hobby, through its inception into professional academia and to the present time, anthropologists have asserted that the primary subject matter of its attention is fast disappearing. The concept of the "disappearing savage," it is suggested here, has provided both a rationale for the existence of social and cultural anthropology as well as a ruse or mirror for our own sense of modernity.
