Extending the analysis of Weimar stabilization beyond economic factors, From Recovery to Catastrophe examines the impact of programs and politics during recovery. Drawing on local material from major German cities, Lieberman traces the emergence of strong local activism and comprehensive, functional policies on the municipal level. Paradoxically he finds that these same programs contained the potential for destabilization and accelerated the fragmentation of bourgeois politics. They unleashed intense debate over the needs of the consumers, and the purpose and extent of public spending and government intervention

Abstract: Pursuit of invulnerability proliferated in the modern era when individuals took objects into battle or followed practices promising immunity from harm. Western contemporaries wrote off these beliefs as primitive, and later scholars minimized their importance, arguing that colonial authorities exaggerated invulnerability to obscure economic grievances. To date, invulnerability has gained attention for its role in millenarianism. Adopting a case study approach Michael Adas argued that groups that lost power supported prophetic movements. However, the frequency of invulnerability shows the value of a geographic approach. This article charts locations and timing of invulnerability practices to map out zones of invulnerability. This broader approach helps to identify causes for the proliferation of invulnerability. Invulnerability did not create a unified or proto-nationalist response to rapid imperial expansion and settler societies, but invulnerability reflected the shock and disorientation of the period on a global scale.

AbstractThe vast body of inquiry into nationalism has traditionally seen Europe as a main center for the emergence of nationalism, but scholars of "national indifference" have countered with the idea that nationalism may not matter much at all as a motive for most people. The concept of national indifference calls into question the power of nationalism as a motive for action and the mass appeal of nationalism. Studies of national indifference have constructed an alternative non-national narrative, but face particular challenges accounting for major themes and episodes of discrimination and violence. At its core, national indifference paradoxically both rejects and accepts binary notions of identity and incorporates binary assumptions about motives. It is tempting to resolve the contest between parallel accounts of pervasive, powerful nationalism and national indifference by choosing a victor, but this contrast between models shows the fluidity and dynamism of nationalism. The debate between the now classic accounts of nationalism and the alternative of national indifference points to the importance of often overlooked variables: frames and sense of time.
