Gilles Deleuze is widely regarded as one of the major postwar proponents of Nietzschean thought in continental philosophy. Over a period of forty years, he presented what amounts to a philosophy of vitalism and multiplicity, bringing together concepts from thinkers as diverse as Nietzsche and Hume. In the first comprehensive English-language introduction to Deleuze, John Marks offers a lucid reading of a complex, abstract and often perplexing body of work. Marks examines Deleuzeʹs philosophical writings -- as well as the political and aesthetic preoccupations which underpinned his thinking -- and provides a rigorous and illuminating reading of Deleuzeʹs early studies of Hume, Nietzsche, Kant, Bergson and Spinoza, his collaborations with Felix Guattari, and the development of a distinctively "Deleuzian" conceptual framework. Marks focuses on the philosophical friendship that developed between Deleuze and Foucault and considers the full range of Deleuzeʹs fascinating writings on literature, art and cinema. This is a clear and concise guide to the work of one of the twentieth centuryʹs most influential thinkers. -- Publisher description

The most intriguing question about Indonesia's economic development during the twentieth century is why the country's growth performance has been so erratic and displayed such a high degree of discontinuity. This is connected with the fundamental question about the nature of long-run economic development in Indonesia. So far the economic historiography of Indonesia has been less systematic than what the available source material would permit. Indonesia is exceptionally well endowed with rich statistical sources, which carry the potential of supporting a rigorous and systematic quantitative approach to vital questions concerning the economic growth performance in the long run. This book takes such an approach and presents new estimates for the long-run growth of the Indonesian service sector, and analyses the role of the various service sectors in economic development. Linking empirical and theoretical analysis in a creative fashion, Daan Marks provides a rich and original contribution to our understanding of the economic history of Indonesia. He shows that the service sector has played a crucial role in Indonesia's economic development. Or in other words, to fully understand Indonesia's economic development path services need to be accounted for.
This book offers an unconventional defense of Kantian ethical theory as encompassing moral regard for nonhuman animals and, complementarily, an exhaustive rendition of a relatively neglected refutation of consequentialism as violating an essential meta-ethical condition of theoretical viability
