ISSN: 1043-1578, 0094-7571
Describes attempts to use alternative media to make the voices of political prisoners more accessible and immediate. The heart of these efforts is to let the prisoners speak for themselves. Sees this as an essential step in opposing their demonization (as "common criminals" and, more recently, as "terrorists") by the state and supporting efforts to obtain their release. The movements are strengthened by their participation, by building communication and community in support of human rights. The Freedom Archives and the websites of the Prison Activist Resource Center and the Jericho Movement are examples of projects that serve this purpose. (Original abstract - amended)

Describes the use of the Internet media to share the thought of US political prisoners. The Internet has great potential for allowing prisoners to defend themselves against their demonization as criminals & terrorists, to promote efforts for their release, & to support human rights movements. The Freedom Archives, websites of the Prison Activist Resource Center (PARC), & the Jericho Movement have achieved such goals. Prisoners are not allowed access to the Internet, but organizations such as PARC have posted their messages on the Internet & printed messages to be sent to political prisoners. 24 References. L. A. National identity and support for European integration
This paper takes up the familiar question of how one can explain support for European integration. One line of explanation builds on trade theory to theorize a calculus of economic costs and benefits. A second explanation draws on cognitive and social psychology to assess how individuals use political cues - grounded in ideology or elite communication - as a guide to complex issues. A third line draws on the psychology of group membership to consider how group identities, above all, national identities, bear on support for European integration. We use multi-level analysis to evaluate these explanations, and we conclude that perceptions of national identity are by far most powerful in structuring views on European integration. We find that the particular perception of national identity matters, as well as how identity is mobilized in national contexts. Thus, while strong national identity is consistent with support for European integration, exclusive national identity is a powerful brake on support. The effect of exclusive national identity varies across countries. It is strongest in countries where referenda on European integration have taken place. Referenda exacerbate conflicts within and among elites and empower single-issue anti-European protest movements, and this mobilizes exclusive national identity in an anti-European direction.

Growth and Heat Resistance Kinetic Variation Among Various Isolates of Salmonella and its Application to Risk Assessment
In: Risk analysis: an international journal, Band 23, Heft 1, S. 199-213
ISSN: 1539-6924
The abilities of cells of a particular type of bacteria to leave lag phase and begin the process of dividing or surviving heat treatment can depend on the serotypes or strains of the bacteria. This article reports an investigation of serotype‐specific differences in growth and heat resistance kinetics of clinical and food isolates of Salmonella. Growth kinetics at 19°C and 37°C were examined in brain heart infusion broth and heat resistance kinetics for 60°C were examined in beef gravy using a submerged coil heating apparatus. Estimates of the parameters of the growth curves suggests a small between‐serotype variance of the growth kinetics. However, for inactivation, the results suggest a significant between‐serotype effect on the asymptotic D‐values, with an estimated between‐serotype CV of about 20%. In microbial risk assessment, predictive microbiology is used to estimate growth and inactivation of pathogens. Often the data used for estimating the growth or inactivation kinetics are based on measurements on a cocktail—a mixture of approximately equal proportions of several serotypes or strains of the pathogen being studied. The expected growth or inactivation rates derived from data using cocktails are biased, reflecting the characteristics of the fastest growing or most heat resistant serotype of the cocktail. In this article, an adjustment to decrease this possible bias in a risk assessment is offered. The article also presents discussion of the effect on estimating growth when stochastic assumptions are incorporated in the model. In particular, equations describing the variation of relative growth are derived, accounting for the stochastic variations of the division of cells. For small numbers of cells, the expected value of the relative growth is not an appropriate "representative" value for actual relative growths that might occur.
