This paper explores Michael Pollan's thesis in The Omnivore's Dilemma that an inadequate industrial model imposed on the biological rhythms of agriculture and a shortsighted United States government policy of direct payment corn subsidies, perpetuates a non-sustainable food system that ramifies in ecological and social decline in the long term. Bernard Lonergan's heuristic account of the emergence of the good of order and the longer cycle of decline provides the philosophical framework to grasp the elements at play in the breakdown of these flexible circles of schemes of recurrence on the technological, economic, and political levels. At its core, the lack of harmonious development within the intelligent and intelligible three-fold levels of society lies in a failure (1) to integrate harmoniously the lower schemes of recurrence into higher orders and (2) to grasp the presence of group and individual bias in the vertical consolidation of food production, processing, and distribution into the hands of a few profit-driven corporations. After first exploring the myriad negative consequences, I recount Lonergan's notion of the development of the good of order in order to highlight the general bias operative in the current non-sustainable industrial food system. Finally, I consider the possibility of new emerging schemes of recurrence that seek to reverse the longer cycle of decline. ; Este artículo explora la tesis de Michael Pollan, en El dilema del omnívoro, que un modelo industrial inadecuado impuesto a los ritmos biológicos de la agricultura, y una política gubernamental miope de los Estados Unidos de pago directo de subsidios al maíz, perpetúa un sistema alimentario no sostenible que se ramifica en el deterioro y la decadencia ecológica y social a largo plazo. La explicación heurística de Bernard Lonergan sobre el bien de orden y el ciclo más largo de la decadencia, proporciona el marco filosófico para comprender los elementos que intervienen en la quiebra de estos círculos flexibles de esquemas de recurrencia en los niveles tecnológico, económico y político. En el fondo, la falta de un desarrollo armónico inteligente y razonable en el interior de estos tres niveles de la sociedad lleva al fracaso en (1) integrar de forma armónica los esquemas de recurrencia inferiores dentro de órdenes superiores y (2) en comprender que están presentes sesgos individuales y sociales en la consolidación vertical de la producción, procesamiento y distribución de alimentos, en manos de unas pocas corporaciones con ánimo de lucro. Después de una primera exploración de múltiples consecuencias negativas, explico la noción de desarrollo del bien de orden de Bernard Lonergan con el fin de destacar el sesgo general operativo en el actual e insostenible sistema industrial alimentario. Por último, considero la posibilidad que emerjan nuevos esquemas de recurrencia que busquen dar marcha atrás al ciclo más largo de la decadencia.

Political history was fairly recently seen as a moribund field, the study of machinations among elites that had little connection to culture and society. Over the past couple of decades, however, political history has transformed itself by focusing on larger issues of the culture of politics and by incorporating the experience and agency of subalterns into the story of state and nation formation. This valuable volume of eight essays and an introduction reveals how much political history has changed and how these changes have revolutionized our understanding of the nineteenth century. For a collection of essays, the volume is unusually coherent in its themes, the essays as a whole sustaining an argument about the vibrancy and inventiveness of Colombian nineteenthcentury political culture. El conflicto identitario que existe en la República Dominicana ha provocado la invisibilización de la afrodescendencia en este país. El discurso elaborado por las élites políticas e intelectuales ha generado la auto-negación y el rechazo de diferentes aspectos de la cultura afrodescendiente cómo los relacionados con la estética, las costumbres, la religión, etc. Además, este discurso ha generado una fractura socio cultural que enfrenta a quienes defienden o rechazan el respeto por la cultura y los derechos de la afrodescendencia. En este artículo se tratará el conflicto identitario en la actualidad a través del discurso que rechaza la afrodescendencia y en oposición, la respuesta por parte de diferentes colectivos o activistas. This newsroom study of Sky News suggests that its decision to go for highly intensive, un-Americanized coverage of the 1997 general election was determined less by hopes of immediate commercial payoff than by a desire for self-respect and for the attention of politicians and fellow broadcasters. Sky hoped to become the channel of record for party professionals, partly in the hope that this would assist it in the increasing market for 24-hour news. It was also preoccupied with beating the competition from other broadcasters. Both these aims helped to boost the self-image of Sky staff as major media players, but also ensured that they continued to adhere to conventional notions of public service broadcasting. ; Este estudio sobre la Redacción de Sky News sugiere que su decisión de realizar un seguimiento muy intenso y no americanizado de las elecciones generales de 1997, no vino tanto determinada por la esperanza de obtener beneficios comerciales inmediatos, como por el deseo de lograr autoestima, junto con la atención de políticos y colegas. Sky confiaba en convertirse en el canal de referencia para los profesionales de la política y esperaba que esto le ayudaría a superar la competencia de otras cadenas y de los futuros canales de noticias de 24 horas. Los dos objetivos ayudaron a que los profesionales de Sky se vieran como actores principales de los medios, pero también aseguraron su adhesión a las nociones convencionales de la radiotelevisión como servicio público.

En la cobertura de los sucesos políticos, los medios de comunicación proyectan unos enfoques que median la realidad, pues transfieren determinados marcos interpretativos. Esto sucede de manera particular en la cobertura de los escándalos políticos, debido al capital simbólico que para los políticos significa su buena reputación. El presente artículo analiza la cobertura de los casos de corrupción política de España y Gran Bretaña en la década de 1990. Atendiendo de manera específica a la noticia icono como una forma de enfoque (frame) sugerida por Bennett, y mediante el análisis de contenido cualitativo y cuantitativo, esta investigación estudia la presencia y la acción de noticias icono en España y en el Reino Unido. La investigación muestra que la cobertura utilizó noticias icono en forma de palabras vívidas, que se reprodujeron de manera extensa en los medios, de manera que llegaron a funcionar como elementos simbólicos, encapsulando, de forma condensada, toda una historia, hasta llegar a convertirse en algo emblemático de una etapa política. El análisis permite concluir que el poder que los medios tienen en la cobertura de los escándalos políticos no viene determinado tanto por la acción del periodismo de investigación, como también y fundamentalmente por el marco interpretativo que los medios transfieren en su cobertura. ; In covering politics the media project certain perspectives through the mediation of reality in the context of specific interpretative frameworks. This particularly occurs in the coverage of political scandal because of the symbolic capital represented by politicians' good reputation. This article analyses cases of political corruption in Spain and Britain in the 1990s. Employing the notion of news icon suggested by Bennett as a form of frame, and throughout qualitative and quantitative content analysis, this research examines the presence and action of news icons in Britain and Spain. The study shows that press coverage used news icons in the form of vivid word phrases, which were reproduced and maintained beyond the time of the news events being reported. They functioned as symbolic devices encapsulating in a condensed way a whole story, becoming emblematic and evocative of a whole political period. The research concludes that the power of the press lies not so much in the action of investigative journalism but also more fundamentally in the interpretative framework which the media employ to report events.
