Der Ausbruch der ägyptischen Revolution im Januar 2011 hat die meisten Experten überrascht. Der Autor analysiert in seinem Beitrag die Rolle der ägyptischen Jugend in diesem Prozess. Dabei betrachtet der Beitrag die Zunahme von Repression und kollektiver Aktivität, die angeführt wurde von einem aufkommenden nicht-gewalttätigen Protest und themenbasierter Bewegungen ab 2000 bis zum Ausbruch der "ägyptischen Revolution". Die Analyse beginnt mit der zweiten palästinensischen Intifada als Wendepunkt in der Entwicklung. Der Beitrag erläutert die Beziehungen der Protestbewegungen zum Islamismus und geht auf die Bedingungen für die Mobilisierung der Jugend ein. Abschließend wendet sich der Beitrag der Politik und der Dynamik der Radikalisierung in Ägypten zu. Das Fazit am Ende des Beitrags fasst noch einmal die Schlussfolgerungen aus der Analyse zusammen.
