AbstractCohort studies are essential for conducting large studies of multiple exposures and outcomes in humans. Recently, the ability to combine data from multiple cohorts in, for example, meta-analyses, and the willingness in the genetics community to collaborate to enable replication studies has led to many new insights into the genetic and environmental determinants of human health and behaviors. The contribution of Professor Nicholas Martin to the development of cohort studies, particularly of twin and twin-family studies, over a period of several decades is reviewed. He has contributed to the development and use of both Australian and international resources. The contributions of Australian twin studies to genomewide association projects are multiple, and across multiple domains, from biomarkers, lifestyle and behavior to disorders and disease.

Worldwide demographic changes and their implications for governments, corporations, and individuals have been in the focus of public interest for quite some time due to the fiscal risk related to adequate retirement benefits. Through a more detailed analysis of mortality data an additional type of risk can be identified: differences in mortality improvements by birth year, also known as "cohort effects." Previous contributions have, however, not formalized a suitable measure to further investigate mortality improvements but rather relied on graphical representations without particular focus on individual cohorts but groups of the overall population. No criterion to identify single birth year cohorts as select has been established. A simple criterion for identifying select cohorts is proposed and used here to what country mortality data reveals about the mortality and longevity experience of cohorts. Select cohorts are rare but can be quite different from surrounding cohorts and so may generate financial risks that need to be hedged naturally or artificially with new ART instruments.

The SNSF Career Tracker Cohorts (CTC) study tracks the careers of applicants for the postdoctoral career funding schemes of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). These include Early Postdoc.Mobility, Postdoc.Mobility, Ambizione, PRIMA, and Eccellenza. The aim of the CTC study is to gain a better understanding of the researchers' career paths and of the career impact that is attributable to the SNSF career funding schemes. The results will also serve as a basis for the future development of career funding policies and schemes at the SNSF. The CTC project is designed as a panel study with yearly cohorts. Every new cohort starts with a base survey shortly after the application deadline. Subsequently, the participants are invited to take part in a monitoring survey every year, in order to follow-up on their professional and personal life situations.

The Galician among the imperial troops in the capital, either as officers or base soldiers, would have contributed to strengthening imperial power. As it seems, the majority of these Praetorian Galicians carried out their duties during the second century AD. Résumé Blayo (Chantai). - Choix des cohortes et des sous-cohortes. Règles générales et application à l'avortement. Le choix des cohortes et des sous-cohortes au sein desquelles étudier un phénomène et le choix des indices sont déterminés par la nature des caractères attachés à l'événement par lequel ce phénomène se manifeste. On distingue les caractères qui qualifient à la fois l'événement et la population qui vit cet événement (une naissance légitime est une naissance de femme mariée) de ceux qui ne qualifient que l'événement (une naissance de fille par exemple). Les événements étudiés doivent être classés selon la nature des caractères qui leur sont attachés et on montre comment la sélection des cohortes et celle des indices découlent de ce classement. On distingue selon que les données ont été recueillies par observation continue ou par observation rétrospective. On illustré* les règles énoncées en les appliquant à l'étude de la fécondité de 2ème rang dans le mariage, et on propose un mode d'analyse de l'avortement provoqué qui respecte ces règles.
