The participation of non-professionally trained people in so-called citizen science (CS) projects is a much discussed topic at the moment. Frequently, however, the contribution of citizens is limited to only a few narrow tasks. Focusing on an initiative dedicated to the study of the human microbiome, this paper describes such a case where citizen participation is limited to the provision of funding, samples, and personal data. Researchers opted for a crowdsourced approaches because other forms of funding and recruitment did not seem feasible. We argue that despite the narrow understanding of participation in the context of some CS projects, they can address some of the democratic concerns related to scientific knowledge creation. For example, CS and crowdsourcing can help to foster dialogue between researchers and publics, and increase the influence of citizens on research agenda setting.

Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Phänomen "Crowdsourcing", also mit dem Outsourcing unternehmenseigener Aufgaben an die Internetöffentlichkeit. Crowdsourcing ist eine der jüngsten Entwicklungen im länger währenden Prozess des Wandels der Beziehung zwischen Unternehmen und Konsumenten. Der dabei neu entstehende Typus Konsument, der Arbeitende Konsument, stellt traditionelle Ansichten darüber, was Konsumenten sind und wie sich diese verhalten, grundlegend infrage. Es gilt also, das herkömmliche Rollenverständnis - der Kunde ist "König" und agiert eher passiv - zu hinterfragen. Konsumenten werden gegenwärtig immer mehr zu Mit-Arbeitern, die einzelne Schritte des Produktionsprozesses übernehmen, wobei der Prozess letztlich immer unter Kontrolle der Unternehmen bleibt. Der vorliegende Beitrag kategorisiert auf der Grundlage einer genaueren Definition von "Crowdsourcing" die Erscheinungsformen und differenziert diese von angrenzenden Phänomenen. Abschließend werden die potentiellen (positiven und negativen) Folgen von Crowdsourcing für die zukünftige Organisation von Arbeit diskutiert.

This book attempts to link some of the recent advances in crowdsourcing with advances in innovation and management. It contributes to the literature in several ways. First, it provides a global definition, insights and examples of this managerial perspective resulting in a theoretical framework. Second, it explores the relationship between crowdsourcing and technological innovation, the development of social networks and new behaviors of Internet users. Third, it explores different crowdsourcing applications in various sectors such as medicine, tourism, information and communication technology (ICT), and marketing. Fourth, it observes the ways in which crowdsourcing can improve production, finance, management and overall managerial performance. Crowdsourcing, also known as massive outsourcing or voluntary outsourcing, is the act of taking a job or a specific task usually performed by an employee of a company or contractors, and outsourcing it to a large group of people or a community (crowd or mass) via the Internet, through an open call. The term was coined by Jeff Howe in a 2006 issue of Wired magazine. It is being developed in different sciences (i.e., medicine, engineering, ICT, management) and is used in the most successful companies of the modern era (i.e., Apple, Facebook, Inditex, Starbucks). The developments in crowdsourcing has theoretical and practical implications, which will be explored in this book. Including contributions from international academics, scholars and professionals within the field, this book provides a global, multidimensional perspective on crowdsourcing.

Die Autoren gehen der Frage nach, welche Auswirkungen Crowdsourcing auf die Arbeitsorganisation und die Gesellschaft hat. Indem sich Personen an Crowdsourcing-Angeboten beteiligen, tragen sie zur Produkt- bzw. Arbeitsprozessinnovation bei. Darüber hinaus ist Crowdsourcing auch eine Form der Kundenintegration. Crowdsourcing bietet für Unternehmen ein erhebliches Einsparpotenzial. Von Kunden beeinflusste Innovationen können zu weiteren Marketingzwecken genutzt werden. Die Qualität der Arbeitsergebnisse durch die 'Crowd' kann dadurch beeinträchtigt sein, dass sie im Gegensatz zu Unternehmensmitarbeitern kaum über geeignete Qualifikationen verfügt. Letztlich, so die Verfasser, ist derzeit noch offen, wie der 'Arbeitende Konsument' der Zukunft beschaffen sein könnte und wie das Verhältnis zwischen Konsumenten- und Erwerbsarbeit ausgestaltet sein wird. Crowdsourcing has been proven to be an effective and efficient tool to annotate large data-sets. User annotations are often noisy, so methods to combine the annotations to produce reliable estimates of the ground truth are necessary. We claim that considering the existence of clusters of users in this combination step can improve the performance. This is especially important in early stages of crowdsourcing implementations, where the number of annotations is low. At this stage there is not enough information to accurately estimate the bias introduced by each annotator separately, so we have to resort to models that consider the statistical links among them. In addition, finding these clusters is interesting in itself as knowing the behavior of the pool of annotators allows implementing efficient active learning strategies. Based on this, we propose in this paper two new fully unsupervised models based on a Chinese restaurant process (CRP) prior and a hierarchical structure that allows inferring these groups jointly with the ground truth and the properties of the users. Efficient inference algorithms based on Gibbs sampling with auxiliary variables are proposed. Finally, we perform experiments, both on synthetic and real databases, to show the advantages of our models over state-of-the-art algorithms. ; Pablo G. What explains popular support for military dictatorship? Existing literature on democratic breakdowns focuses on addressing support for democratic collapse but not subsequent authoritarian regime. This article explores pro-dictatorship sentiment before and during the military dictatorship in Thailand. It uses social media data to analyze support for the antidemocratic mobilization of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) and the subsequent military dictatorship, which lasted from 2014 to 2019. It argues that support for military dictatorship prior to and after regime installment was qualitatively different both in sentiment and type of support. Prior to the coup, pro-dictatorship support was unified by antigovernment sentiment, while following the coup pro-regime support was contingent upon policy preferences of different groups. These findings fill a gap in the literature on regime change, which tends to be focused on explaining support for democratic collapse and remains silent on this support in its aftermath. This study may present the first-ever evidence of pro-dictatorship support following a collapse of democracy.
