The three-part article of which this one is Part III is predicated on the principle that creativity is a universal activity, essential in an evolutionary perspective, to adaptation and sustainability. This work on the sociology of creativity has three purposes: (1) to develop the argument that key factors in creative activity are socially based and developed; hence, sociology can contribute significantly to understanding and explaining human creativity; (2) to present a systems approach which enables us to link in a systematic and coherent way the disparate social factors and mechanisms that are involved in creative activity and to describe and explain creativity; (3) to illustrate a sociological systems theory's (Actor-Systems-Dynamics) conceptualization of multiple interrelated institutional, cultural, and interaction factors and mechanisms and their role in creativity and innovative development with respect to diverse empirical cases. Part I of this article introduced and applied a general model of innovation and creative development stressing the socio-cultural and political embeddedness of agents, either as individuals or groups, in their creative activities and innovative productions. Part II investigated the "context of innovation and discovery" considering a wide range of applications and illustrations. This 3rd segment, Part III, specifies and analyzes the "context of acceptance and institutionalization" where innovations and creative developments are socially accepted , legitimized, and institutionalized or rejected, suppressed. A number of cases and illustrations are considered. Power considerations are part and parcel of these analyses, for instance the role of the state as well as powerful private interests and social movements in facilitating and/or constraining innovations and creative developments in society. In the perspective presented here, generally speaking, creativity can be consistently and systematically considered to a great extent as social, cultural, institutional and material as much as psychological or biological. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

This volume examines intelligence services since 1945 in their role as knowledge producers. Intelligence agencies are producers and providers of arcane information. However, little is known about the social, cultural and material dimensions of their knowledge production, processing and distribution. This volume starts from the assumption that during the Cold War, these core activities of information services underwent decisive changes, of which scientization and computerisation are essential. With a focus on the emerging alliances between intelligence agencies, science and (computer) technology, the chapters empirically explore these transformations and are characterised by innovative combinations of intelligence history with theoretical considerations from the history of science and technology and the history of knowledge. At the same time, the book challenges the bipolarity of Cold War history in general and of intelligence history in particular in favour of comparative and transnational perspectives. The focus is not only the Soviet Union and the United States, but also Poland, Turkey, the two German states and Brazil. This approach reveals surprising commonalities across systems: time and again, the expansion and use of intelligence knowledge came up against the limits that resulted from intelligence culture itself. The book enriches our global understanding of knowledge of the state and contributes to a historical framework for the past decade of debates about the societal consequences of intelligence data processing.

The paper examines political discourse in Slovakia, particularly the representations of and ideas about refugees and the relevant topics employed in political, explanations and representations of refugees constructed and employed within political argumentation. The text reveals the main discursive legitimation strategies present in the political framing of refugees, resulting in the non-acceptance of non-Christian refugees. Among these, positive us- and negative other-representation, together with denial, moral evaluation and discursively declared risk based on religion, prove to be the main ones employed for symbolic and physical boundary construction. In this case, the dividing line between "Slovaks" and "others" has been formed around cultural (religious) adaptability, consequently connected to (un)deservingness of solidarity. Different topics are employed before and after adoption of the European Union refugee redistribution system. Economic interests, border protection, and organized crime are applied as main themes of legitimation strategies in the pre-quota period, while cultural interest, identity protection, and terrorism are employed in the post-quota period. They function as a background for argumentation, knowledge production, political decision-making and wider identity-building and national self-determination processes. In the wider context of globalization and Europeanization trends, Christianity becomes an iconic response to global changes and it is used as a mobilizing tool for invoking nationalist and anti-European Union sentiment. Moreover, as the political strategies and responses employed in other Central and Eastern European countries are similar, the Slovak case might be applied more generally and thus, provide deeper understanding of the political responses and state-building processes of other countries in the region. ; Článek řeší politický diskurz na Slovensku, zejména pohledy na běžence, témata, které političtí představitelé považují za relevantní, jejich vysvětlení a také reprezentace o uprchlících konstruované v politické argumentaci. Text ukazuje klíčové diskurzivní legitimizační strategie přítomné v politické konstrukci obrazu o uprchlících a ústící do odmítnutí ne-křesťanských běženců. Pozitivní sebe reprezentace, negativní reprezentace druhých, společně s odmítáním, morálním hodnocením a diskurzivně konstruovaným ohrožením založeným na náboženství jsou hlavními strategiemi využívanými ve formování symbolických a fyzických hranic. V tomto případě je rozdělující hranicí mezi "Slováky" a "těmi druhými" kulturní (náboženská) přizpůsobivost, která je bezprostředně propojená se tím, zda si solidaritu uprchlíci zaslouží nebo nikoli. Před a po přijetí kvót Evropskou unií političtí představitelé staví jejich argumentaci na odlišných tématech. Ekonomické zájmy, ochrana hranic a organizovaný zločin jsou vedoucími tématy před přijetím povinného redistribučního systému, zatím co kulturní zájmy, ochrana identity a terorizmus převažují po přijetí kvót. Tyto témata slouží jako podklad pro argumentaci, produkci vědění, politické rozhodování a zároveň jsou klíčové v procesu budování identity a národní sebe-determinace. V širším kontextu globalizace a europeizace se křesťanství stává ikonickou odpovědí na tyto globální změny a je využíváno jako mobilizační nástroj nacionalistických proti-evropských postojů. Jelikož jsou podobné nebo stejné strategie přijímané i v dalších zemích střední a jihovýchodní Evropy, slovenský příklad má všeobecnější přesah a může tak pomoci porozumět politickým reakcím a státotvorním procesům v regionu.

Nowadays, creative cultural industries perform a prominent role in the economic growth and cultural development. Unfortunately, cultural exports have not found their proper position in developing countries like Iran. The potential opportunity to export cultural products does not easily reach the desired result. The present study scrutinizes the economic efficiency of creative cultural and artistic works focusing on audio and video products. The most important question that the present study seeks to find a suitable answer to is whether the creative cultural industries and especially the creative audio and video media are economically efficient? The present study has been done in terms of basic purpose and descriptive-analytical method. The findings of the present study rely on the library method and include methods such as documentary analysis and meta-analysis of valid research findings. It is noteworthy that the premise of this research is that the design and production of creative cultural works with a focus on audio and video products are conditional on having an efficient economic justification. Findings of the study indicate that both at the micro and macro levels, there is a positive and significant relationship between the production of cultural works and their economic efficiency in Iran. The political recommendation of this research is to adopt a coherent mechanism based on the principles of economics and considering the cultural capacities of the country to increase the design and production of creative cultural industries

This dissertation studies the current Spanish economic, political, and social crisis and its representations through apocalyptic imaginaries. I seek to establish a fundamental political and cultural distinction between two models of these imaginaries traceable in representations of Madrid. On one hand, it looks at cultural discourses that display catastrophist projections of the present and the future, insisting on alarmistic and deterministic messages. On the other hand, it looks at other discourses that subvert this representation of the capitalist crisis as the end of the world, shifting the symbolic value of the apocalyptic imaginaries towards figurations of the end of capitalism. I argue that there is a fundamental tension between these two dissimilar recoveries of the apocalyptic cultural tradition that determines conflicting political aims regarding the social battle for the "right to the city." The first model—most present in public discourse, the media, and mass entertainment channels—promotes a depoliticizing ideology that is functional to the reproduction of the capitalist system. These kinds of narratives lead to widespread states of collective political isolation and generalized pessimism that hinder social reactions to oppressive regulations and policies of dispossession imposed during crises. The second model—which eventually appears within social movements and countercultural production—identifies subjects' and collectives' political agency to imagine and rehearse new and emancipated ways of life through alternative organization of society. To make this argument, I focus my study in three different tropes: desertification, flood, and waste. These are all present in a set of objects and texts from different sources that I analyze, such as press articles, narrative fiction, song writings, and the visual arts, among others. In doing so, I deploy a theoretical framework that combines historical and contemporary conceptualizations of cultural apocalypsis from fields such as anthropology, history, cultural studies or philosophy (Koselleck, De Martino, Jameson, Fisher, among others) with critical literature about the contemporary city within capitalism (Observatorio Metropolitano, Lefebvre, Harvey, etc.). Ultimately, it is my goal to analyze the political condition of imagination and culture by establishing a systematic framework of analysis that takes into serious account structural features, material conditions of production, places of enunciation, and the differential effects in cultural and social reconfiguration of these imaginaries.

The essay considers the atypical literary production of the humanist Tristano Caracciolo (Naples, 1437-1522) and analyses Caracciolo's controversial standing into political and cultural sphere of Naples between the end of XV century and the beginning of XVI century. In the De vitae auctoris actae notitia, his memoirs, and in other autobiographical and historical works, Caracciolo, member of Neapolitan nobility, focuses on events of major importance for history of Naples and its Kingdom. The essay shows the portrait of an intellectual who felt himself not entirely close to the reigning dynasty and was faithful to the native and austere mos maiorum of the Neapolitan nobility. ; Questo articolo considera la atipica produzione letteraria dell'umanista Tristano Caracciolo (Napoli, 1437-1522) e analizza la sua controversa collocazione nel contesto politico e culturale napoletano tra la fine del secolo XV e l'inizio del XVI. Nel De vitae auctoris actae notitia, le sue memorie, e in altri lavori di taglio autobiografico e storico, Caracciolo, membro della nobiltà napoletana, indirizza la propria attenzione su eventi di grande importanza per la storia di Napoli e del suo regno. L'articolo mostra il ritratto di un intellettuale che non si sentiva completamente schierato con la dinastia regnante e restava fedele al mos maiorum, antico e austero, della nobiltà cittadina.

This article, based on research that the author conducted between 1997 and 2000, examines the relationship between Cypriot television programmes and the lifestyles of 13- to 18-year-old Greek-Cypriot teenagers. Cognitive and affective lifestyle values are identified in relation to television content, whether in local Cypriot productions, or in programmes imported from Greece or from the US. Further combinations of cognitive/affective lifestyle values are also traced in the relationship between television programmes and lifestyle reported by respondents in the research. In the light of Cyprus's expectations for accession to the European Union in the near future, the predicament of young people's attitudes, value systems and modes of behaviour, in relation to television content, is interesting to trace and place within a more general public discussion that tries to examine identities in the European community, in a global setting. The conclusions seem to point to globalizing tendencies, with strong local resonances.

AbstractThe capability of multinational corporations (MNCs) to create and efficiently combine knowledge from different locations around the world is becoming increasingly important as a determinant of competitive advantage and will be more and more critical to their success and survival. Consequently, cultural differences and cross‐cultural contexts play an essential role for and significantly influence global knowledge creation and management. This paper presents a case study resulting from a current empirical research project on knowledge management and the transfer of knowledge within organizations of MNCs. We describe and analyze the efforts of global market leader Tyco Flow Control (TFC)'s Japanese subsidiary KTM to transfer relevant—and often highly tacit—knowledge to a newly acquired production site in Taiwan. Challenges and difficulties encountered in the process of global knowledge management—in this case the transfer of knowledge from Japan to Taiwan—as well as the creation of new knowledge locally and its feedback—are illustrated and carefully examined. Finally, we discuss our findings and highlight practical implications for managers and international corporations in a global business environment. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

I explore the social movement learning operating within one site of critical public pedagogy and, specifically, examine how the anti-consumption activist group Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping fosters participatory cultural production, enacts a poetic community politics, and encourages transitional spaces of learning through a pedagogy-of-the-unknown.
