It is generally recognized that the theoretical status of studies on political culture is precarious, but the importance of the latter as a dimension of political societies is such that, despite its gaps, it must continue to be used as an analytical concept. After establishing the elements of a conceptual schema of culture, the interaction between political culture & social & political structures is discussed, & some methodological considerations are offered that are capable of strengthening empirical research against the biases inherent in functionalism. 1 Table, 1 Figure.
III. 1. Prof. Syed M. Naguib Al-Attas, who teaches Malayan literature at the University Kebangsaan of Kuala Lumpur, is known for his studies on Malayan mysticism and his new ideas on the role of Islam in the Archipelago. On the occasion of his inaugural lesson, given last January, he summarized some of his principal conceptions; in a long text, some passages of which Denys Lombard has translated here, the author takes up a position against the Indianists who insist on exaggerating the importance of the "Indo-Javanese" period, and presents the arrival of Islam as marking a great intellectual revolution, the only ' renovation" worthy of the name that ever occurred in South-East Asia.
Between 1938 and 1942, border-crossing Norwegian-Canadian author Martha Ostenso published three short stories in Chatelaine magazine, stories that engage in complex ways with themes of femininity, nationalism, and consumerism. In this article, we consider how the context of Chatelaine shapes and complicates readings of these stories by placing the stories in conversation with surrounding material, including advertisements and editorial content. The fiction, we argue, unsettles romantic tropes and nationalist rhetoric, and contests the correlation between the attainment of happiness and the acceptance of class and gender norms. In examining authorial identity, textual complexity, and print cultural contexts, we show how middlebrow magazines are a vibrant means of understanding middle-class culture's anxieties and aspirations.
A number of social sciences studies have built a "familialistic-parochial-localistic" paradigm since the early 1960s in order to characterize the Italian political culture. Such a paradigm was criticized in the last decade. This article wants to test it empirically on the basis of available opinion polls. It appears that the feeling of national identity is weak if we consider it only under its "civic" aspect (ie, the satisfaction vis-a-vis the political system). Once we include the idea of being part of a cultural community, then such a feeling is clearly more significant, & Italy appears as a more "normal" nation than it usually seems. 10 Tables, 1 Figure, 48 References. Marc Raeff, Georgii Florovskii historian of Russian religious culture. Priest, philosopher and historian Father Georgii Florovskii completed his studies in emigration. The experiences of revolution and civil war, as well as the impact of Western thinkers and of a Christian, personalist philosophical anthropology, laid the foundation for his rejection of historical determinism and of all utopianism in social and philosophical speculation. His major historical work, Puti russkogo bogosloviia, rooted in this philosophy and using a contextualist approach, marks a watershed in Russian intellectual history and its historiography. The paper briefly points out the major concepts and contributions of the seminal book.
