The Indian diaspora is woven around castes, languages, dialects, religions- a young nation boasting of an ancient civilization in which inequalities are deeply ingrained in its culture and traditions. Although vital government interventions have succeeded in increasing the literacy rate of women in both urban and rural areas general household characteristics such as income, caste, occupation and education attainments of parents still continue to determine access, attendance, completion and learning outcomes of girls and women from severely disadvantaged communities. The critical issue investigated in the comparative case study is why and how established hegemonic roles changed because of the catalytic role of adult literacy. The research was conducted in Bhilwara District, Rajasthan and Howrah District, West Bengal, India where literacy has played an intrinsic role in transforming the lives of the rural and marginalized women. In Indian society social norms often prevent women from exercising their free choice and from taking full and equal advantage of opportunities for individual development, contribution and reward. So assessing empowerment/transformation would mean identifying the constraints to empowerment, how women's agency has developed and finally looking if 'agency' was able to address the constraints to women's access to adult literacy. This would also entail seeking answers to questions such as 'How is transformation represented in their narratives? What was the impact of literacy upon their lives?
; Political culture is the sum of the political structure, traditions and tendencies that determine the individual's orsociety's political thought and behavior. The Late Bronze Age Mongolian culture known for its memorial deer stones and khirigsuur burials, the Deer Stone-Khirigsuur complex (hereafter DSK) dating to 1300–700 BCE, displays persistence over several hundred years. Radiocarbon dates from hearths and horse remains associated with these sites show little change in architecture, ritual practice, and iconography, giving the impression of an unchanging mortuary cultural regime. New research demonstrates that deer stones are memorials to recently deceased leaders that display distinctive features of personal identification within the unifying framework of an over-arching religious theme represented by deer-bird iconography. Despite continuity, the DSK complex is not monolithic. This paper presents evidence for regional cultural and chronological variation in deer stone art and ceremonial activity based on research at the Khyadag and Zunii Gol sites in northcentral Mongolia. Areal excavation, detailed survey, and recording of deer stone art revealed the presence at Khyadag of a new class of miniature deer stones and evidence of copper smelting, and at Zunii Gol — an unusual khirigsuur associated with a deer stone carrying elements of Scytho-Saka animal style art. These data indicate geographic and chronological overlap in V. V. Volkov's deer stone types and changes in deer stone art and khirigsuur ritual in the later period of the DSK complex. In the future, emphasis needs to be given to broad excavation strategies that explore the contextual history of individual DSK sites, dating of Volkov's Type II and III deer stones, and regional comparisons with Xinjiang, Baikal, and the Mongolian and Gornyi Altai.
Purpose: This study aimed to meta-analysis the level of internalised stigma experienced by individuals with psychosis worldwide, and the impact of cultural differences, economic status of the studied regions and duration of illness on their levels of internalised stigma. Clinical and individual level factors associated with internalised stigma and stigma resistance were also systematically reviewed. Methods: A systematic search of keywords on two scholarly databases were conducted. The individualism index of the countries or regions where the studies were conducted was retrieved from Hofstede's updated measurement of individualism. Economic status of regions was categorised based on their per capita gross national income. Meta-analysis and meta-regression were conducted using the 'metafor' package in R. Factors associated with internalised stigma and stigma resistance were also systematically consolidated. Results: Seventy-three articles were included in the meta-analysis and the pooled score of both internalised stigma and stigma resistance of individuals with psychosis were within the mild range (2.20 and 2.44, respectively). The meta-regression analysis found high collectivism culture is significantly related to a higher level of internalised stigma. Economic status was not significant. Thirty-five articles were included in the systematic review and clinical, psychological, psychosocial variables, cognition and sociodemographic factors were found to be associated with internalised stigma. Conclusion: Internalised stigma in psychosis is ubiquitous worldwide and high collectivism culture may be related with high internalised stigma. With the presence of multiple individual factors related to internalised stigma, intervention programmes to reduce internalised stigma should consider focussing on both macro- and micro-level factors.
The place and function of Oral poetry in contemporary Quebec as well as the narrow relationship between poetic expression and political commitment are the key issues underlying this doctoral thesis. The Nuits de la poésie are an outstanding observatory of specificities and evolutions of poetry life in Quebec over the last forty years. The first edition in 1970 stands out as the birth of an authentic tradition which establishes a close link between the Oral, the poetic public expression and the statement of national existence. The first part of this thesis presents the conditions of the emergence of this seminal event and studies the historical, linguistics and political context, which saw the birth of a specifically Quebec culture. The second part is devoted to the first edition of the Nuit de la poésie. It focuses on practical and theoretical issues related to the analysis of the document film, the only witness of this edition. It also focuses on the issues related to the registration of oral performance on a mechanical support as well on printed books. The third part examines the repetition of the event. It then analyses continuity and thematic and aesthetic evolutions in Quebec poetry from 1980 to 2010 and even more contemporary and globalized manifestations as those of slam poetry.Through the four several editions of the Nuits de la poésie and of extending events, emerges the face of a country that is particularly linked to poetic word and practice. The 1970s are those of defense and illustration of the literary and poetic Quebec. The 1980s saw the advent of female voices and the beginning of an aesthetic diversification, while the 1990s point out the emergence of an identity more open to migrant cultures. The non-repetition of the event in 2000 is less a sign of a slowdown than a result of the development of poetic genre in Quebec and its dissemination on a wider scale for wider audiences. Concerning the edition of 2010, it is presented as a tribute to the national practice of poetry and illustrates the extreme vitality and importance of poetry in Quebec society.
Chilean historiography states Araucanian territory kept its pristine conditions until the republican period beginning. However, the presence of border military enclaves would have produced an early environmental disturbance in the Araucania. To validate this hypothesis, a study of the Spanish chronicles, old documents and historiographical studies was done. Results indicate there was significant environmental disturbance on the Araucanian ecological system, as a result of the intercultural contact during the Arauco war and the Spanish-Creole settlement. Native species extinction, exotic species introduction, Mapuche crops substitution, natural resources mistreatment, land use changes, Mapuche culture modification, and Araucanian mortality and migration rising are among the environmental effects occurred under the area influenced by the forts.
"Staging Indigenous Heritage examines the cultural politics of four Indigenous cultural villages in Malaysia. Cai demonstrates how they are often beset with the politics of brokerage and representation that reinforce a culture of dependency on the brokers, marginalising their intended beneficiaries. By critically examining the relationship between Indigenous tourism and development through the establishment of Indigenous cultural villages, the book addresses the complexities of adopting the 'culture for development' paradigm as a developmental strategy. Demonstrating that the opportunities for self-representation and self-determination can become entwined with the politics of brokerage and the contradictory dualism of culture, the book shows how this can both facilitate and compromise their intended outcomes. Challenging the simplistic conceptualisation of Indigenous communities as harmonious and unified wholes, Cai shows how Indigenous cultures are actively forged, struggled over and negotiated in contemporary Malaysia Confronting the largely positive rhetoric in current discourses on the benefits of community-based cultural projects, Staging Indigenous Heritage should be essential reading for academics and students in the fields of museum studies, cultural heritage studies, Indigenous studies, development studies, tourism, anthropology and geography. The book should also interest museum and heritage professionals around the world"--
Relating to both the practice of teaching media studies and also to theoretical questions within media and cultural studies, this study examines pop music, media studies and the micro-cultural politics of adolescence. It argues that media education has neglected pop music, and that, as something of enormous significance in the lives of young people, it merits a serious place in the field.; The author provides accounts of media studies in action, including detailed accounts of classroom discussions, interviews with students and teachers, examples of students' work and their biographical reflect

At first glance, romance seems an improbable angle from which to write a cultural history of the German Democratic Republic. By most accounts the GDR was among the most dour and disciplined of socialist states, so devoted to the rigors of Stalinist aesthetics that the notion of an East German romantic comedy was more likely to generate punch lines than lines at the box office. But in fact, as John Urang shows in Legal Tender, love was freighted as a privileged site for the negotiation and reorganization of a surprising array of issues in East German public culture between 1949 and 1989. Through close readings of a diverse selection of films and novels from the former GDR, Urang offers an eye-opening account of the ideological stakes of love stories in East German culture. Throughout its forty-year existence the East German state was plagued with an ongoing problem of legitimacy. The love story's unique and unpredictable mix of stabilizing and subversive effects gave it a peculiar status in the cultural sphere. Urang shows how love stories could mediate the problem of social stratification, providing a language with which to discuss the experience of class antagonism without undermining the Party's legitimacy. But for the Party there was danger in borrowing legitimacy from the romantic plot: the love story's destabilizing influences of desire and drive could just as easily disrupt as reconcile. A unique contribution to German studies, Legal Tender offers remarkable insights into the uses and capacities of romance in modern Western culture.
