Why? is the simple, impulsive question we ask when confronted by horrible acts of hatred and violence. Why do students shoot fellow students or employees their coworkers? Why do mothers drown their children or husbands stalk and kill their wives? Love to Hate challenges us to turn this question upon ourselves at a deeper level. Why, as a culture, are we so fascinated by these acts? Why do we bestow celebrity on the perpetrators, while allowing the victims to fade into a second death of obscurity? Are we, as Pope John Paul II famously accused, "a culture of death"? And if so, how can we break free of this unacknowledged aspect of the cycle of violence? Unlike those who point solely to media imagery, splintered families, or lax gun control laws in search of the roots of America's endemic violence, Jody M. Roy suggests that we all must be held responsible. She argues that we reveal our love affair with hatred and violence in the ways we think and speak in our daily lives and in our popular culture. The very words we use function as building blocks of callousness and contempt, betraying our immersion in subtexts of violence and hatred. Ethnic cultures experience great transformations that affect
their sustainability and holistic nature. However, the traditions
related to life and death are, remarkably, persisting. This articles
focuses on funerary customs and burial rituals that are significant for
the Khakass people. In this research of the Khakass burial rituals we
bring together archaeological, ethnographic, and folklore material
that reveals unique data about funerary customs. The article reviews
the burial rituals in historical perspective and focuses on changes the
rituals have undergone. It concludes with the summary of transformations
in contemporary burial practices.

This article presents a comparison of Heimito von Doderer's historical texts "Das letzte Abenteuer" and "Ein Umweg" and Hugo von Hofmannsthal's short story "Das Märchen der 672. Nacht" and one-act play "Der Tor und der Tod" in order to demonstrate Doderer's relationship to the art and literature of the fin-de-siècle era. It focuses on melancholia, a central theme of culture around 1900 that plays a foundational role in Doderer's works. This investigation concentrates on the Dance of Death as an especially significant motif. Alongside memory, melancholia can be understood as a central aspect of Doderer's works.

Koro is a culture-bound syndrome characterized by a fear that the genitals or breasts will retract into the body and cause death. Here we consider the history of ideas about Koro, from early concepts in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to contemporary ideas from medicine and sociology. This conceptual history reveals important issues about the classification (nosology) of Koro. In doing so, it demonstrates the need to integrate standardized phenomenological criteria with etiological models in order to capture the important features of complex behavioral disorders in the cross-cultural setting.
