Objective: This special section brings together diverse research regarding driver interaction with advanced automotive technology to guide design of increasingly automated vehicles. Background: Rapidly evolving vehicle automation will likely change cars and trucks more in the next 5 years than the preceding 50, radically redefining what it means to drive. Method: This special section includes 10 articles from European and North American researchers reporting simulator and naturalistic driving studies. Results: Little research has considered the consequences of fully automated driving, with most focusing on lane-keeping and speed control systems individually. The studies reveal two underlying design philosophies: automate driving versus support driving. Results of several studies, consistent with previous research in other domains, suggest that the automate philosophy can delay driver responses to incidents in which the driver has to intervene and take control from the automation. Understanding how to orchestrate the transfer or sharing of control between the system and the driver, particularly in critical incidents, emerges as a central challenge. Conclusion: Designers should not assume that automation can substitute seamlessly for a human driver, nor can they assume that the driver can safely accommodate the limitations of automation. Designers, policy makers, and researchers must give careful consideration to what role the person should have in highly automated vehicles and how to support the driver if the driver is to be responsible for vehicle control. As in other domains, driving safety increasingly depends on the combined performance of the human and automation, and successful designs will depend on recognizing and supporting the new roles of the driver.

Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda is among the most important designers, architects, engineers and designers at the end of '800. He has participated in numerous architectural competitions, both at Palermo in Sicily and again in Italy. He has conducted numerous studies on the identification of significant types of construction from coffee house to the shrines cemeteries, the decorative detail to the urban study on a large scale. Of course He is remembered in our city, especially as the designer of the Politeama, an imposing structure that dominates the central square of Palermo. Very old city, whose roots, evidenced by the presence dating back to the Punic, have never found a break until the present day, offering a repertoire of great architectural prestige and international reputation. Moreover, capital, enjoys a privilege that few other cities can boast: it has two of the most important theaters in the history of Architecture: the Politeama and the Teatro Massimo. And our dear Almeyda participated in both competitions, winning one and losing the second. But what were the real reasons why he did not win the second project? Perhaps the town is terrified of being left with a certified copy of the already made Politeama? Or, participation in the race by Giovan Battista Filippo Basile unquestionably compromised the expert advice? Or perhaps, again, the second project did not meet in style, beauty and greatness, the grandeur of the former? These and more are the questions we have approached the study of two extraordinary projects proposed architectural competitions with only one signature, but hides itself, strange stylistic mechanisms but also social, historical, political.

Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize skill acquisition during training and skill retention as a function of training strategy, retention period, and task type in the form of a numerical model and then apply that model to make predictions of performance on an unknown task. Background: Complex systems require efficient and effective training programs for the humans who operate them in discontinuous fashion. Although there are several constructs for learning theory, models that enable analysts to predict training outcomes are needed during the design of training programs. Method: This study involved 60 participants who were trained on five tasks relevant to RQ-1 Predator unmanned aircraft system sensor operators by one of three strategies that represented a continuum of instructor interactivity. After training, performance data for all five tasks were collected. Participants completed the same tasks 30 or 60 days later to determine skill retention and the rate at which task proficiency was reacquired. Results: Models built from tasks that isolate human performance channels adequately predicted performance on a task that combined those channels. Conclusion: Models that predict performance on tasks that isolate human performance channels can be used to make predictions on tasks that draw on multiple channels. This model provided a distribution of performance data that was statistically similar to actual performance data. Application: System designers trained with human performance data on a set of tasks can apply those tasks' characteristics to future tasks to make reasonably accurate performance predictions, thereby allowing the designers to make early decisions regarding training strategy to teach those tasks.

PurposeThis paper aims to show that the meaning of development influencing the design of ICT for development (ICT4D) projects is important in deciding what purpose they will eventually serve.Design/methodology/approachThrough a review of the literature on development and technology studies, the paper shows how different meanings of development guide technology usage and policy choice for land reforms. A case study of a land records computerization project in India is used to reinforce this claim.FindingsBy explaining alternative manifestations of interlinkages between development and technology, the paper demonstrates that the design choice, especially the content and service delivery model, for an ICT4D project gets influenced by the development context within which it is set.Research limitations/implicationsThe focus of the paper has been restricted to a limited context of information and communication technology usage – to land reforms as a development objective, in a relatively better‐off province of India. Future research will include ICT4D projects in other domains and in different socio‐economic settings.Practical implicationsThe findings will encourage ICT4D policy makers and project designers to broaden their perspectives of what constitutes development and explicitly acknowledge the importance of development contexts in influencing the outcomes of ICT4D projects.Originality/valuePrior research in ICT4D has not looked explicitly at the influence of development contexts in informing technology design. The paper attempts to fill this gap by tracing design choices to the contexts of technology use created through alternative understanding of the objectives of development. This can be of help to researchers looking at issues of technology use for societal development and for policy makers and project designers entrusted with the choice of technology.

Infrastructural monument presents the proceedings of the first of two conferences organized by MIT's new Center for Advanced Urbanism around the biennial theme of infrastructure.
