The main objective of this paper is to characterize poverty and indicators of socioeconomic development of the micro region of the Bico do Papagaio in the State of Tocantins, Brazil, as theoretical referential Capability Approach (CA), from Amartya Sen. The main indicators used were: the birth rate, crude rate infant mortality, the human development index, literacy rate, fertility rate, the Gross Domestic Product - (GDP) per capita. The data were collected in the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the State of Tocantins and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The results suggest that the micro region of the Parrot's Beak have evidence of decline in extreme poverty and with a tendency to reduce income inequality. Despite the micro region indicators progress, it has a long way to go to achieve a satisfactory level of human, social and economic development.

Violence and its faces are also the engine of human history. The violence that is witnessed today in Ibero-American cultures includes its genesis in social inequality and in the prevailing capitalist mode of production. The state of violence is produced by social inequalities that have marked the history of humanity since its inception. However, the natural world itself also manifests itself in a violent way as everything comes into being in the universe and life is always fighting against the woman. Globally we live in the age of knowledge, information and violence that is increasingly more extraordinary and uncontrollable by normal (dominant) political and economic means. I believe that the extravagance and malaise caused by violence can be investigated in addition to statistical metrics and bureaucratic prescriptions related to violence. I consider it important to undertake a radical investigation of the current 'state of violence' of humankind, seeking to understand and interpret violence in its various facets, and therefore, it imposes a more intuitive than analytical method, which also requires one. sospecha and radical inquiry. We can approach globalization from the perspective of impacts or defects, abundance and wealth or poverty and misery, where the rich increase their fortune while the poor drown in their penuries. These are some thoughts that crossed the minds of students and teachers of the doctorate in nursing at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, after reading the "Globalization, Poverty and Health" article, the critical analysis of the film "Encounter with Milton Santos or the Global World Seen from This Side" and the debate on the book "Globalization and Social Sciences". Globalization is a process of economic, social and cultural development that has bloomed in the past two or three decades and entails the strengthening of social relations that connect distant countries, fostering the rapid dissemination of local events that can be accessed by anyone around the world. However, many authors and organizations continue to criticize this process. Almost-irreversible inequalities have settled in developing countries, making us reflect on the extent to which economic, political, and cultural discrepancies among human beings are acceptable in the light of the ethical and moral concerns. Rev Cuid. The rhythm in the fall of inequality in Brazil is acceptable? Evidences of the historical and international context. The study uses two approaches to answer the question of whether inequality in Brazil is falling fast enough. The first is to compare the variation of the Gini coefficient in Brazil with what was observed in several countries that today belong to the OCDE (United Kingdom, United States, Netherlands, Sweden, France, Norway, and Spain) while these same countries built their social welfare systems during the last century. The second approach is to calculate for how much Brazil must keep up the fall in the Gini coefficient to attain the same levels of inequality of three OCDE countries that can be used as a reference: Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The data indicate that the Gini coefficient in Brazil is falling 0.7 point per year and that this is superior to the rhythm of all the OCDE countries analyzed while they built their welfare systems but Spain, whose Gini fell 0.9 point per year during the 1950s. The time needed to attain various benchmarks in inequality are: 6 years to Mexico, 12 to the United states and 24 to Canadian inequality levels. The general conclusion is that the speed with which inequality is falling is adequate, but the challenge will be to keep inequality falling at the same rate for another two or three decades. The paper analyses the Brazilian distribution of income with the objective of identifying to what extent economic policies, macroeconomic performance and changes in the structure of the labor force are related to inequality. There is evidence of long term increases in inequality, especially between 1960 and 1970. Long term trends do not seem to be affected by economic performance, although the stagnation of the 1980s has led to absolute income losses for all individuals except those at the top level. Short term behavior, on the other hand, seems to have been influenced by economic performance: There is evidence that growth enhances equity, whereas high inflation has the opposite effect

This paper investigates the following questions: what were the effects of the 1990s economic reforms on employment, wages, income inequality indicators and international competitiveness? Did economic reforms cause major or minor effects on the economy? Who were the gainers and the losers of the decade? (ipea/DÜI)

This article examines the record of structural reforms & regional economic integration in Latin America during the last few decades. In contrast to the optimism of the early 1990's, there is a sense of confusion & frustration across the region today. Growth has slowed, new investment has declined, & chronic problems of inequality & poverty persist. A slow but perceptible political backlash against orthodox market-oriented policies has set in. In light of these developments, this article aims at rethinking the last three decades of economic reform in the region. First, it examines some recent work on the economic policies in place in Latin America before the recent neoliberal reforms -- those of import substitution industrialization. Second, it discusses the wide variation in the implementation of market oriented policies in the region. Third, it looks at the impacts of these reforms, including their disappointing results in certain areas. Fourth, it analyzes the search for a new consensus on economic policy & trade integration in the Americas. Adapted from the source document.
