This volume aims to interest students of modern economic theory in the history of economics. For this purpose, past economic theories are considered from the point of view of current economic theories and translated, if possible and necessary, into mathematical models. It is emphasized that the currently dominating mainstream theory is not the only possible theory, and that there are many past theories which have important significance to the advancement of economic theory in the present situation, or will have it in the near future

On the methodological plain this paper outlines the conditions that contribute to the development of economic theories and it continues with an examination of the concrete circumstances that gave rise to modern neoclassical macroeconomic theories. The paper further claims that the current impasse in macroeconomics is indicative of the need for new directions in economic theory which becomes imperative in the long economic downturn that started in 2007 and concludes by suggesting the need for a synthesis between the classical analysis and the theory of effective demand.

THE TERM PERSUATION MEANS THE COMPLETE ACT OF CAUSING ONE TO DO SOMETHING BY APPEALING TO REASON AND EMOTION. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER IS TO DEVELOP AN ECONOMIC THEORY OF PERSUASION. FIRST IT DISCUSSES HOW INDIVIDUALS PERSUADE THE MEDIAN VOTER IN COLLECTIVE DECISION-MAKING CONCERNING THE SOCIAL SUPPLY LEVEL OF A PUBLIC GOOD WITHIN THE MEDIAN VOTER MODEL. SECOND, IT DEVELOPS A MODEL OF PERSUASION IN THE CASE OF EXTERNALITIES WITHIN THE COASIAN FRAMEWORK. FINALLY, IT PRESENTS A SUMMARY OF ARGUMENTS AND POINTS OUT THE PROBLEMS THAT REMAIN TO BE EXPLORED.
