With the end of the Cold War comes the inevitable need to review the notion of national security under the new world order. Issues such as drug trafficking & terrorism become top priorities regarding the national security concerns of nations; however, other topics emerge with the potential of threatening the stability of the States. This article examines the issue of environment & security highlighting the case of Mexico. It emphasizes that environmental degradation & natural resource scarcity have the potential to affect the stability of nations, & in some cases, can even lead to violent conflicts. Potential sources of conflict are the adverse effects of climate change, water & other resources scarcity, deforestation, demographic growth & environmental refugees, among others. Likewise, different official answers are analysed such as the Rio Summit & the World Summit of Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, with particular attention given to the recently held Special Conference on Security organized by the Organization of American States. 2 Tables.
