L'obbiettivo della ricerca è l'analisi del riassetto istituzionale dovuto alla crisi economica. Il progetto di ricerca parte da un'analisi della formazione della moneta unica e dell'Unione economica e monetaria, per proseguire attraverso l'analisi dello stato di avanzamento delle politiche economiche e monetarie mediante la ridefinizione degli assetti giuridici ed istituzionali, come diretta conseguenza della crisi economica. Si prende infine in considerazione l'accelerazione di alcuni processi d'integrazione che hanno messo in discussione il ruolo di alcune Istituzioni partendo dalla natura stessa del metodo comunitario e del processo di legittimità democratica alla base del consolidamento e dello sviluppo dell'Unione economica e monetaria. Fino ad arrivare allo statuto speciale ottenuto dal Regno Unito che mette in discussione l'assetto stesso del progetto europeo, decretando un Europa a più velocità, frutto di una specifica visione di un Europa regolatori. ; The propose of this research is to analyze the future of the European project due to the changes of the economic crisis. The research is based on a deep analysis of European economic and monetary policies, starting from the creation of the single currency through the construction of the Economic and Monetary Union, until the impact of the debt crisis on the European Governance and institutions. The research project analyses the legal and political arrangements that have queries the Community method in favor of the intergovernmental method. It is analyzed the acceleration of certain processes of integration/desegregation of the European project that have questioned the role of some institutions, their accountability and legitimacy, until the UK special status that have create de facto a legal multi-speed Europe.

L'effettività della tutela cautelare, intesa come tutela tempestiva, adeguata e piena, è stata la linea cardine dell'evoluzione della giustizia amministrativa, che, nel corso di un periodo durato più di un secolo, grazie all'opera della giurisprudenza e della dottrina, si è strutturata oggi su un vero processo. Approdo recente, e allo stesso tempo, simbolo di questa evoluzione, è sicuramente il Codice del processo amministrativo emanato con il d. lgs. 2 luglio 2010, n. 104. La ricerca, di cui questo contributo costituisce un resoconto, è iniziata contestualmente all'entrata in vigore del nuovo testo, e quindi è stata anche l'occasione per vederne le prime applicazioni giurisprudenziali. In particolare la lettura del Codice, prescindendo da una mera ricognizione di tutto il suo lungo articolato, è stata fatta alla luce di una ponderazione, nell'attualità, non solo del principio di effettività, ma anche del principio di strumentalità che lega tradizionalmente la fase cautelare con la fase di merito. I risultati della ricerca manifestano la volontà del legislatore di confermare questo rapporto strumentale, per fronteggiare una deriva incontrollata verso una cautela dagli effetti alle volte irreversibili, quale verificatasi nell'applicazione giurisprudenziale, ma contestualmente evidenziano la volontà di estendere la portata della tutela cautelare. Guardando a cosa sia diventata oggi la tutela cautelare, si è assistito ad un rafforzamento degli effetti conformativi, tipici delle sentenze di merito ma che si sono estesi alla fase cautelare. I giudici, pur consapevoli che la tutela cautelare non sia una risposta a cognizione piena, bensì sommaria, intendono comunque garantire una tutela tempestiva ed effettiva, anche per il tramite di tecniche processuali particolari, come quella del remand, cui, all'interno della ricerca, viene dedicato ampio spazio. Nella sua ultima parte la ricerca si è focalizzata, sempre volendo guardare in maniera globale agli effetti della tutela cautelare, sul momento dell'esecuzione e quindi sul giudizio di ottemperanza. ; During more than a century, the core of administrative justice evolution was the effectiveness of interim legal protection, that is a protection timely adequate and full. Thanks to case law and doctrine contribution, it is now structured on a complete judicial proceeding. Issued by legislative decree no. 104 of 2010, the Code of Administrative Proceeding is symbolic of this evolution (from now on, the Code). The present research begun at the time when the Code entered into force. For this reason, it is an opportunity to examine its first judicial application. In particular, the study of the Code aimed to an evaluation in the light of principle of effectiveness and the principle of instrumentality. The latter bounds traditionally interim protection with the judgment not only in the administrative actions but in any type of actions. The results show, on the one hand, a legislative confirmation of this instrumental relationship, in order to face uncontrolled drifts towards irreversible effects of interim protection, as partially noticed in case law, on the other, a desire to extend the scope of protection pending trial. In order to point out what the interim protection has become today, it is necessary to consider concrete effects of such measures on an application level. In that regard, binding effects have been strengthened along with suspension effects or not. Binding effects towards administrative decisions, typical of annulment actions, are now extended to a pre-trial moment . Judges are aware though that interim protection is not a full knowledge solution. However, they intend to ensure a timely and effective protection, even by peculiar technical proceedings such as remand, deeply analysed during the research. Finally, the last part of the present research focused on execution and compliance, still in the light of the effects of interim protection.

After almost 20 years from the first Berlin Declaration, the end of 2018 saw a new impulse in open access to publications (and not only) with the launch of Plan S by the Coalition S and with the announcement of the launch of "European Open Science Cloud". The two events are part of a new scenario that sees, in particular, publishers strongly urged by academic and government institutions to take the definitive step towards a true Open Science. After the transition from paper to electronic, everyone is called to a new challenge: to find one (or more) economically sustainable models that are no longer based on the subscription model but on that of publications. In this highly unstable phase, we speak generically of "transformative agreements". Some characteristics and problems are here analyzed. ; Dopo quasi 20 anni dalla prima Dichiarazione di Berlino la fine del 2018 ha visto un nuovo impulso dell'accesso aperto alle pubblicazioni (e non solo) con il lancio di Plan S da parte della Coalition S e con l'annuncio dell'avvio dell'European Open Science Cloud.I due eventi si sono inseriti all'interno di un nuovo scenario che vede, in particolare, gli editori fortemente sollecitati da parte delle istituzioni accademiche e governitive a compiere il definitivo passo verso una scienza realmente aperta.Dopo il passaggio dal cartaceo all'elettronico, tutti sono chiamati ad una nuova sfida: trovare uno (o più) modelli economicamente sostenibili che si basino non più sul modello delle sottoscrizioni ma su quello delle pubblicazioni. In questa fase, altamente instabile, si parla genericamente di "modelli trasformativi". Ne vengono in questa sede analizzate alcune caratteristiche e problematiche.

The need to understand, in practice, which tools can and implement governance policies adhering to the concept of sustainable development, places the interpreter in front of a series of questions: first of all, whether it is possible to transfer the principle of sustainable development from its Natural "habitat", the supranational dimension of a soft low tool, to positive law. To this first question it is possible to immediately provide a positive answer: the so-called Environmental Code, introduced into our legal system with d. lgs. 152 of 3 April 2006 in the first version did not contain any reference to sustainable development or to other environmental principles; only following the 2008 corrective (legislative decree 16 January 2008, n.4 which modified the legislative decree n.152) have they been codified. Art. 3 - quater is dedicated to sustainable development, in particular the first paragraph states "every human activity legally relevant under this code must comply with the principle of sustainable development, in order to ensure that the satisfaction of the needs of current generations cannot compromise the quality of life and the possibilities of future generations ". In the second paragraph, the legislator mainly addresses the activity of public administrations, sanctioning how it must "be aimed at allowing the best possible implementation of the principle of sustainable development, so that in the context of the comparative choice between public and private interests characterized by discretion interests in the protection of the environment and cultural heritage must be given priority consideration ". ; L'esigenza di comprendere, in concreto, quali strumenti possano e dare attuazione a politiche di governance aderenti al concetto di sviluppo sostenibile, pone l'interprete dinnanzi ad una serie di interrogativi: anzitutto, se sia possibile trasferire il principio di sviluppo sostenibile dal suo "habitat" naturale, la dimensione sovranazionale di strumento di soft low, al diritto positivo. A questo primo quesito è possibile fornire, da subito, una risposta positiva: il c.d. Codice dell'Ambiente,introdotto nel nostro ordinamento con d. lgs. 3 aprile 2006 n.152 nella prima versione non conteneva alcun riferimento allo sviluppo sostenibile né ad altri principi ambientali; solo a seguito del correttivo del 2008 (d.lgs.16 gennaio 2008, n.4 che ha modificato il d.lgs. n.152) essi sono stati codificati. L'art. 3 - quater è dedicato allo sviluppo sostenibile, segnatamente al I comma dispone "ogni attività umana giuridicamente rilevante ai sensi del presente codice deve conformarsi al principio dello sviluppo sostenibile, al fine di garantire che il soddisfacimento dei bisogni delle generazioni attuali non possa compromettere la qualità della vita e le possibilità delle generazioni future". Nel II comma il legislatore si rivolge principalmente all'attività delle pubbliche amministrazioni sancendo come essa debba "essere finalizzata a consentire la migliore attuazione possibile del principio dello sviluppo sostenibile, per cui nell'ambito della scelta comparativa tra interessi pubblici e privati connotata da discrezionalità gli interessi alla tutela dell'ambiente e del patrimonio culturale devono essere oggetto di prioritaria considerazione".

The development of Italy's national library network (Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale, SBN) consisted of three phases: 1) definition of the objectives and fundamental guidelines of the cooperation model, of the related methodological apparatus, of the architectural choices, of the management procedures, and of the organisational aspects; the initial nuclei of the two national libraries and the central database (Indice) were implemented in this initial phase and the political and institutional relations established and formalised; 2) consolidation of the project's infrastructure components, i.e., the organisational components (protocols and agreements between partners), the technological components (acquisition of IT resources) and the methodological components, which were refined as cooperation developed; in the same phase the network was expanded, with a robust central system; 3) management and growth of the national system with the aim of ensuring an "open" network as regards use, technologies, cooperation strategy and service expansion. In 1997, a private company studied the evolution of the SBN network. The study reports consists of the following five parts: 1) Analysis of the present situation; 2) Efficiency of the present solutions; 3) Definition of problems and needs; 4) Outline project for the technical and organisational solution; 5) Final considerations. The first two parts analyse the present situation of the SBN, more specifically, the efficiency of the present situations at the various levels and identification of the critical nodes, and also examine the problems and needs of the various categories of users. The next two parts illustrate the draft macroproject for the proposed technical and organisational evolution while the final part analyses specific aspects such as organisational impact, relative realisation risks, some reference elements for a cost/benefit analysis and indications regarding the monitoring criteria for projects under way or to be implemented in the future.

Dottorato di ricerca in Storia d'Europa, società, politica, istituzioni (xix-xx) ; L'obbiettivo di questo lavoro è tracciare una storia istituzionale dell'università, inquadrandola nel più generale contesto sociale ed economico che determinò le politiche formative del paese dall'immediato dopo guerra, passando per gli anni dell'espansione economica e quelli successivi della stagnazione, giungendo fino ai primi anni ottanta. La ricerca ha seguito due direttive: da un lato l'evoluzione dell'università determinata dalla politica istituzionale e i cambiamenti della struttura universitaria, dall'altro lo stravolgimento del ruolo sociale dell'università, determinato dal passaggio dal modello liberale di università d'elitè funzionale alla formazione di una ristretta classe dirigente, a indispensabile strumento per la formazione di numerose e ampie categorie di forza lavoro in un paese avviato verso la completa industrializzazione, verso l'enorme sviluppo del settore terziario e in un contesto di profonda urbanizzazione e in generale di superamento dei rapporti sociali dei decenni precedenti alla guerra. La prima traccia di ricerca è stata sviluppata su due categorie di fonti principali: da un lato il dibattito politico-parlamentare intorno ai progetti di legge (le aperture degli accessi del '61 e specialmente del '69, le liberalizzazioni dei piani di studio dello stesso anno, i provvedimenti sulla docenza degli anni settanta), alle indagini conoscitive (quella promossa dal ministro Gonella nel '47 e quella varata da Medici e conclusa con Gui ministro tra il '63 e il '65), alle proposte di riforma (i progetti n. 2.314 del '65, n. 612 del '69, l'elaborazione della "Bozza Cervone" fra '77 e '78), alla regolazione dell'assetto giuridico ed economico del personale docente, ai piani di finanziamento e sviluppo dell'università; dall'altro attraverso lo studio del dibattito interno e fra i partiti utilizzando come fonti i periodici ad essi vicini o attenti al tema ("Riforma della Scuola" e "Rinascita" per il PCI, "Scuola e Città" e "Il Ponte" per il PSI, "La Discussione" e "Tuttoscuola" per la DC, in seguito riviste come "Universitas", ecc.), oltre che atti di convegni e pubblicazioni curate dai protagonisti dell'epoca. Nella ricerca, un ampio spazio è dato al tema della pianificazione scolastica (animato dagli studi di tecnici dell'economia e della formazione), strettamente connessa al dibattito sulla pianificazione economica sviluppatosi prevalentemente negli anni del centrosinistra. La seconda traccia di studio, quella relativa ai cambiamenti sociali e culturali causa ed effetto dell'espansione dell'utenza universitaria, è stata analizzata attraverso lo studio di fonti inconsuete per la storiografia tradizionale, come gli studi di sociologia e di scienze della formazione sviluppatisi a partire dagli anni settanta, i quali fecero largo uso delle cifre sistematizzate da ISTAT e CENSIS sistematizzate nelle tabelle statistiche che completano il presente lavoro. Analizzare l'evoluzione delle componenti sociali ha significato anche indagare le vicende legate alla docenza universitaria, al suo ruolo rispetto al dibattito politico, alle richieste portate avanti e alle funzioni assunte all'interno delle facoltà di fronte ai profondi cambiamenti descritti. Per quanto riguarda gli estremi cronologici della ricerca, la scelta di interrompere la ricerca alla prima metà degli anni '80 risponde all'analisi più complessiva che si fa di quel periodo della storia politica ed economica non soltanto italiana, le cui successive vicende di riforma dell'università rappresentano a mio avviso l'emblema del netto cambio di fase vissuto dalla politica e dalla società anche per quanto riguarda l'istruzione superiore. La suddivisione in capitoli rispecchia invece più fedelmente le fasi della politica universitaria. Nel primo capitolo si fa il punto sull'eredità dell'apparato normativo ereditato dal fascismo e sulle effettive possibilità che si aprirono o meno alle forze politiche per inaugurare una nuova fase, mettendo in luce anche le prime strategie d'intervento abbozzate dai principali partiti nel corso degli anni '50. Nel secondo capitolo sono affrontate le previsioni scolastiche e i progetti di riforma ad esse più o meno legate: dagli studi della SVIMEZ in poi (influenzati da quelli più ampi condotti dall'OCSE), la programmazione scolastica e le previsioni sullo sviluppo economico del paese assunsero un ruolo determinante per la politica di riforma di scuola e università, politica che nei primi anni sessanta si concretizzò nell'istituzione della scuola media unica (1962), nelle prime aperture dell'università ai diplomati di istituti e soprattutto nella prima vera proposta di riforma dell'università, quella di Luigi Gui del 1966, l'unica inserita in un progetto organico di riforma di tutta l'istruzione, il Piano Gui, dichiaratamente ispirato dagli studi di previsione (anche se non sempre coerente con essi). Con il terzo capitolo si affronta la lunga discussione dentro e fuori il Parlamento in merito al più ambizioso progetto di riforma del periodo, il n. 612, sostenuto dai socialisti proprio mentre l'esperienza dei governi di centrosinistra andava esaurendosi nei primi anni settanta; dello stesso periodo (1969) è l'apertura degli accessi all'università a qualsiasi tipologia di diplomato e le liberalizzazioni dei piani di studio, veri spartiacque della storia dell'università italiana. Il terzo capitolo si chiude infine con l'analisi dei "provvedimenti urgenti" del 1973, emblema di un modello di sviluppo dell'università fortemente precario, sintomo dell'incapacità di riformare e investire seriamente nella qualità dell'istruzione universitaria a vantaggio di una strategia prettamente quantitativa. Le tematiche affrontate nel quarto e ultimo capitolo sono invece determinate dall'inedita fase politica vissuta dal paese dalla metà degli anni settanta, caratterizzata dall'avvicinamento fra maggioranza e opposizione fino alla creazione dei governi di "solidarietà nazionale", nati ufficialmente per far fronte a crisi economica e terrorismo politico. Mentre l'attenzione sulla riforma universitaria andava velocemente calando (nonostante un ennesimo dibattito durato anni in Parlamento su un altro complesso progetto di riforma, la "bozza Cervone"), si verificarono gli ultimi cambiamenti sostanziali della struttura accademica attraverso l'ultimo capitolo del riformismo per decreti, tramite il quale furono istituiti i dipartimenti e le figure di ricercatore e docente associato nei primi anni ottanta. Chiude il lavoro l'Appendice Statistica in cui sono raccolte le cifre dell'università italiana (studenti, docenti, rapporti quantitativi e distribuzione, finanziamenti) dal 1946 al 1985. ; The aim of this study is tracing an istitutional history of university, by focusing in the wider social and economic context that determined the higher education policies after Second World War – spanning from the economic espansion years and the later stagnation to the early eighties. The research follows two main paths: on the one hand the university evolution and change of structure as determined by institutional factors; on the other hand the revolutionized social role of universities over the period under investigation. Indeed, the passage from a liberal model of élite universities – destined to the education of ruling classes – to a mass university – an essential instrument in training numerous labor force categories – took place in a rapidly and profoundly changing context. At that time Italy was headed towards full industrialization, was experiencing a massive development of the third sector and mass urbanization. In general, Italy was overcoming the social relations of the decades before Second world war. The First research line was developed on the basis of two main sources. On the one hand I analyzed the political-parliamentary debate on Education Bill proposals (the opening of the access of 1961 and especially of 1969, the curriculum liberalizations of the same year, the measures on univerity teaching in the seventies), on the investigations (the one proposed by Minister Gonella in 1947, launched from Minister Medici and concluded by Gui which was Education Minister from 1963 to 1965), on the various reform proposals of the analyzed decades (projects n. 2.314 of '65, n. 612 of '69, the elaboration of the "Bozza Cervone" between '77 and '78) and about the regulation of the legal and economic framework of higher education teachers and the plans of university funding and development. On the other hand, I studied the internal party debates by employing periodicals close to political parties or particularly sensitive to higher education issues ("Riforma della Scuola" and "Rinascita" for the communist party PCI, "Scuola e Città" and "Il Ponte" for the socialist party PSI, "La Discussione" and "Tuttoscuola" for the Christian democrat party DC, for more recent years periodical such as "Universitas", etcetera). Furthermore I used as sources conference proceedings and pubblications edited by the key actors of the debate. In the research I gave a significant space to the scholastic planning issue. This debate was strictly connected to the one on the economic planning of the country, developed mostly in the center-left wing years. The second part of the study, as said above, focuses on the social and cultural changes which were cause and consequences of the widening of the university students. This was analyzed through the study of source that are unusual to the tradition historiography, such as sociology or higher education studies which were developed from the 1970s and largely employed ISTAT and CENSIS data and researches. I have rationalized these studies in the statistics tables present in this thesis. The analysis of the evolution of social components regarded also university teaching activity issues, its role in relation to the political debate, and the role of teaching staffs within faculties in the profoundly changing circumstances described above. For what concerns the historical time range of this work, the choice to stop in the early eighties answers to a more general analysis of a chapter of the political and economic history that started in that eighties, not only in Italy. In my opinion, the following sequence of events regarding higher education reforms represent the symbol of the clear and abrupt phase change that politics and society experienced at that time. The thesis is organized as follows. The first chapter takes stock of the legislation inherited from the fascism and of the first debates on university in the Assemblea Costituente and in the Parliament, sheding light on the first intervention strategies of major political parties during the fifties. The second chapter addresses the forecasts on school attendendence and the consequent projects of reform. On the basis of first studies of SVIMEZ – influenced by the broader ones of OCSE – the education planning and the forecasts on the country development played a crucial role for the reform policies of schools and universities. Policies embodied in the early sisxties by the institution of the scuola media unica in 1962, by the first opening of access to professional high school graduates; and, in particolar, in 1966 by the first real proposal of university reform, the Piano Gui of Luigi Gui, the only one included in an integral reform plan of all education levels and explicitely inspired from the educational planning studies. The third chapter focuses on the long discussion – inside an outside the Parliament – concernig the most ambitiuos reform project of the period, the n. 612. The latter, while the experience of the center-left wing goverments were extinguishing, was backed by the socialists. However, the socialist were responsabile for the actual watershed in Italian university history, the opening of university accesses to any category of high school graduated students. Lastly, the third chapter ends with the analysis of 1973's "provvedimenti urgenti", emblem of a model of university development heavily based on precarious work. A synthom of the incapacity both in reforming and in seriously invest in education quality, favoring only quantitative strategies. While, in the fourth and last chapter, focuses on the second halph of the seventies a complete new political phase for the country, characterized by the approach between the parliamentary majority (hold by Christian democrat) and the communist opposition until the creation of natonal solidarity governments, ufficially borned to tackle the economic crisic and political terrorism. In the early eighties, while the attention on university reforms was rapidly decreasing, the last substantial change to the academic structure were made after those of 1969. During the last chapter of the "reformism by decrees", the departments and the roles of researcher and associate professor were established. The statistical appendix ends the thesis. Covering a time window that goes from 1946 to 1985, it reports all data on students, teachers, funding and their distribution in the ltalian

The social representation of the infertility coming out from the national newspapers has been explored in relation to the enactment of the Law 40/2004 and the 2005 referendum. All the articles (n=731), published in the last 15 years by the highest circulation Italian newspapers, have been collected in a corpus (token=360345) that underwent a multivariate analysis of textual data. Results show a difficulty in complementing together the mind and the body. The "biologic" is represented as the place of the technical and medical intervention while the "psycho-social" is conceived as the place of the family storytelling of the personal experiences of infertility and the public ethical debate on it. Before the law, newspapers deal with the theme of the family experience probably supporting the law enactment. After the referendum this thematic is dismissed and the theme of infertility as a pathology to treat emerges, bringing back infertility to the medical issue

The importance of adaptive evolutionary conservation has been widely accepted. According to this concept, only a comprehensive evaluation pursued within both a temporal and a spatial perspective may enable to properly assess the potential conservation value of a given resource. This applies well to phylogeographic studies dealing with game birds subjected to intense and large-scale ex situ management. The present study attempted to gain useful genetic information to the adaptive conservation framework of two Palaearctic taxa deserving both evolutionary and conservation interest, namely the black francolin (Francolinus francolinus) and the red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) (Galliformes, Phasianidae). The former belongs to a group of five poorly known and secretive Asian species; the latter, claimed to be the most appreciated and economically relevant quarry species in southwestern Europe, suffers from extensive biotic homogenisation and hybridisation with the congeneric chukar partridge (A. chukar). Both taxa are threatened by hunting pressure and habitat loss over most of their distribution ranges. The evolutionary history of F. francolinus was investigated in relation to its inter- and intraspecific genetic kinship through the amplification and sequencing of the entire Control Region gene (ca. 1170 bp), a set of microsatellite DNA markers providing complementary-to-mitochondrial DNA information. Moreover, the phylogeography of the species was thoroughly updated in light of a molecular approach by genotyping both modern (n = 205) and ancient (n = 76: first half of the XIXth century-1967) birds at a highly variable 185-bp long fragment of the Control Region. Remarkably, the sampling of F. francolinus museum specimens allowed to get around the problems represented by remoteness and political unrest peculiar to most of the species' range as well as to elucidate the genetic affinity of some extinct populations once resident to the western Mediterranean. Special focus was given to Cyprus, this island representing the European stronghold of the entire genus. Specifically, the genetic make-up of birds (n = 59) hunted in the districts of Nicosia and Paphos was characterised. Captive francolins (n = 18) of unknown origin imported to a pet-centre in Nicosia were investigated as well. The phylogenetic reconstructions on the genus Francolinus concurrently supported the monophyly of each of the five species, whereas that of the entire group was suggested according to the proposal of a biogeographical model. The Indian sub-continent was evidenced as the ancestral area for the adaptive radiation of F. francolinus, thus producing weight for its westward adaptive radiation. Moreover, the molecular insight into the phylogeographic pattern of the species returned a poorly yet markedly sculptured genetic picture, the six morphological subspecies being arranged into three well-distinct mitochondrial DNA clusters. Nevertheless, the distribution of traditionally recognised subspecific taxa was revised as well, a more complex and intriguing scenario being disclosed along the Indus and Ganges river valleys in the Indian sub-continent. Molecular evidence for a likely human-mediated introduction of F. francolinus from Asia Minor to Cyprus was found, while the alleged introduction from Cyprus to Sicily was strongly suggested and the historically documented importation from the latter to Tuscany definitely proved. The mixed genetic origin of the extinct population inhabiting Sicily was disclosed as some of its representatives displayed an overt genetic affinity to conspecifics from southern Asia. The same affiliation emerged for an ancient black francolin from Spain, thus crediting the invoked introduction from Sicily into the latter. As far as Cyprus is concerned, the combined genetic systems disclosed the occurrence of genetically isolated wild district populations which should be treated as distinct Management Units. Moreover, the assignment of captive birds to alien Asian subspecies unveiled that genetic pollution may represent a further threat to the native F. francolinus population. On the other hand, the first genetic survey of the introduced A. rufa resident to the UK was carried out to assess whether it could represent a useful genomic backup for the nominate subspecies. Specifically, an East Anglian population (n = 58) was genotyped at both 1092 bp of the mitochondrial Cytochrome-b gene and a panel of microsatellite loci, four species-specific A. rufa x A. chukar Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA markers providing further insights into their degree of genetic integrity. Furthermore, English A. rufa museum specimens (n = 13: 1824-1915) were characterised at a 229-bp long fragment of the Cytochrome-b to know if and to what extent the genetic diversity had been shaped over time by ex situ management. The picture inferred by mitochondrial DNA pointed to the tight genetic affinity of both historical and modern East Anglian birds with A. r. rufa from the easternmost part of the species' range. Overall, an increase of diversity and decline of disparity over time within and among A. rufa populations emerged, respectively. Whereas no evidence of A. chukar mixed maternal ancestry was found in the ancient birds, introgression in modern ones was widespread, pointing to the irretrievable loss of the potentially high conservation value of this resource and precluding its possible employment for ex situ genetic conservation of A. r. rufa in its native range.
