During its January meeting the Council of Din L-Art Ħelwa agreed to sponsor the first campaign of archaeological excavations to be conducted this summer by the Department of Classics and Archaeology of the University of Malta. This is the first of a series of yearly excavation campaigns we plan to undertake at Tas-Silġ, in the area south of the Zejtun-Delimara road. Permission for the excavations was granted by the Minister of Justice, Youth and Culture last year, after consultation with the Museums Department, the Government agency responsible for Malta's antiquities. As stipulated by the Antiquities (Protection) Act of 1925 (as amended), the excavations shall be undertaken under the superintendence of Government. ; N/A

Over the last twenty years social opposition to mineral excavation has increased to such an extent in the densely populated Netherlands, that it is getting extremely difficult to discover new sites for quarrying coarse sand for concrete. While the Dutch government has attempted for many years to shape more effective legislation covering mineral excavation, The Netherlands is importing ever growing quantities of building materials from abroad, especially from Germany and Belgium and from Scotland and Norway. It seems almost certain that in the future some restraints will be imposed on the import of minerals (unconsolidated deposits) from populous areas in Germany and Belgium along the Rhine and the Meuse to the Netherlands. Meanwhile it is extremely difficult for the provinces of The Netherlands to come to an agreement over the location of new extracting sites. The theoretical model is inadequate and requires practical improvement. The directives based on this model, therefore, must be broadened to include larger contextual aspects.

Ongoing excavations of the North Field,Vindolanda site reveal fascinating results about the military occupation of early Roman-Britain. Features of the industrial complex (kiln and dryers), ash and smoke pits, ditch cuts, and artifacts of tools, ceramics and everyday objects help archaeologists contextualize military life and production here at the North Field. The excavation of three early shallow cut ditches between 2010-2014 reinforce that the site hadprolonged occupation and use of the fort pre-dated the main site's earliest date of 85 AD, possibly for construction and/or defensive purposes. The excavation of the later small and large kiln/dryer reveal continued production of vessels and decorated ceramics. This poster highlights key finds of the excavations to display both importance of archaeological contexts and the high activity and continuity of this extramural settlement and how it differs from occupation of the main fort at Vindolanda.
