The papers presented in this volume analyse the many ways in which the Vatican, national Churches and individual catholics dealt with the rise of the extreme right in Europe throughout the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, from the end of the First World War, arguably one of the main catalysts of European interwar fascism, to the conclusion and immediate aftermath of the Second World War. While a number of papers focus primarily on theoretical, methodological issues pertaining to the book's general theme, the majority of papers focus on either a country or region where a fascist movement or regime flourished between the wars and during the Second World War, and where there was a significant catholic presence in society. The various chapters cover almost the entire European continent – an endeavour that is unprecedented –, and they explore a wide range of relevant contexts and methodologies, thus further contributing to the general development of an interpretive 'cluster' model that incorporates a series of investigative matrixes, and that will hopefully inspire future research.

Joppolo's anti-fascist political stance is paradoxical to say the least. His "provocative irony" is a systematic political stance attitude that led him to stay clear of any radical positions and to argue in favor of artists' and intellectuals' detachment from the political life. Joppolo's work, especially his plays, defends the necessity of simple action, carried out in the "everyday life humility". As the writer develops his reflection, mathematical and artistic creativity eclipses the socio-political axis. These reflections climax into two concepts: the social fantastic, already theorized by Mac Orlan, and the abhumanism, imagined by both J. and Audiberti, promoted as an overarching principle, both the essence and substrate of Joppolo's ethics. In the end, the complex evolution of his thinking crystallizes in abhumanism understood as the synthetic blend of communism, ecumenical Christianity and existentialism. ; Joppolo's anti-fascist political stance is paradoxical to say the least. It has been widely recognised De Felice's political historiography crosses art history in many points. In spite of this transdisciplinary relevance, it didn't become a customary resource for art historians because of political reasons or technical reasons. My thesis here is that De Felice's reflexion on such themes as «consensus» or «nation» is important not only for political|social historians, but even for art historians engaged in detecting complex continuities between the first half and the second half of xxth century in Italy and refusing both interpretative ready-madesand retrospective ideological distorsions. If we shift historical perspective or change paradigm, we'll find gradual insertion of Italian late Modernism in the new euro-atlantic artistical|cultural context born out of Second World War is much less obvious and immediate than usually assumed by contemporary narratives about Spazialismo, «monocromo» or Arte Povera.

The Cineguf and the Memory of Fascism (1944-1976) wants to get deeper into the complex metabolisation of the traces of the fascist past, for some of the protagonists of the Cineguf era. The article discusses the way some Cineguf members elaborated upon their own experience into the Cineguf groups - a fascist association of amateur film clubs - and how the social and generational developments regarding the film culture impacted onto this cultural and political metabolisation, in post-war Italy. The article proposes to question the various forms of "silence" that characterizes the archival survival of the films produced by the Cineguf and the narratives of the history of the Cineguf as well.

This contribution aims to examine the relationship between corporations and the Italian industrial groups from a particular perspective, which is that of associations through the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy, established in 1915 to facilitate the commercial relations between Italy and the United States. The economic crisis of 1930 and 1931 and, shortly after, the very serious restrictions on foreign trade of the Fascist government program influenced significantly on the Chamber's development. The authority of the institution was to decline, the relations with the United States became more and more rare and the number of members decreased considerably. Corporations obtained the authorizations on new systems, the establishment of companies for the development of the Italian East Africa, the control on economic initiatives in the colonies, the cooperation with the tax authorities in the determination and application of taxes, and finally control over foreign trade and currencies. So the function that the State should have exercised using the corporations ended up falling into the hands of big businessmen, who ruled through their representatives. Therefore, Corporations guaranteed full freedom to industry groups supporting them, and government authorities recognized the competence and intervention limits of those institutions and the need for a better definition of the objectives. ; The thesis explores the relationship between fascism and the non-catholic and middle-eastern cults, along with some political-spiritual phenomena of the Far East. It expands from these questions: what were the links between thought and action under fascism? What role was the "spirit" given? Did the regime intend to create a political religion? Has a fascist syncretism ever existed? The main source of the thesis is comprised of the political journals, which allow to understand the final goals of fascist religious politics. Its adoption has raised further questions: is it possible to identify a univocal thought on the religions in fascist journals? How did they contribute to the fascist syncretism? The thesis branches into three chapters. The first is dedicated to the fascist doctrine and mysticism, the second is pertaining to the relationship between fascism and the non-catholic denominations (Italian evangelicalism, the Orthodox Church of the Dodecanese, and Eritrean and Ethiopian Coptic Churches), the third investigates the contacts with Hebraism and Islam and includes an examination of the links between fascism, Indian nationalism, Gandhism and Japanese nationalism. The thesis illuminates unknown aspects of fascism, which must be investigated to fully comprehend the ideology of the regime and its political action.
