Mot bedre vitende i norsk matsektor
"The Norwegian food market engenders strong opinions and substantial media attention, with questions regarding agricultural regulations, competition between retail food chains, and the relationship between chains and their suppliers fueling debate. Meanwhile the country's politicians call for greater intervention.
Much of the debate can seem to be happening "against our better judgment". Vague assumptions about the state of the food sector, paired with a strong political will to apply initiatives, is reason enough to look closer at the situation.
This anthology provides an up-to-date factual assessment of the entire value chain in the food market. Central topics include development of productivity in the various segments of the food chain, price differences between different countries, and effects of Norway's tariff system. The book presents new contributions concerning the structure of the market, access to food stores and the significance of brand names, and especially to the kind of bargaining tactics employed between food chains and suppliers, with an overview of how their negotiations are carried out and possibilities for regulatory measures afforded under existing laws.
Against Better Judgment in the Norwegian Food Sector confirms existing knowledge and presents new findings that deserve attention from the sector itself, the media and public authorities. The book will be of interest to everyone seeking to understand the Norwegian food sector and take part in its further development.
The book's chapters have been written by seven researchers with lengthy experience in the field, and edited by Frode Steen, a professor in the Department of Economics at the Norwegian School of Economics, and Ivar Pettersen, a senior advisor at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research."

A number of new technologies for crisis communication is developed based on a now widespread acknowledgment: Information saves lives. But what is really in this realization? The fact that access to information can be equated with access to clean water and food for a refugee? That we no longer need their own exploration crews to track down people which went out to live in the mountains? In the this article I put spotlight on digital map crisis ('crisis mapping') and the importance of an increasingly digitized crisis communication between recipients and donors of humanitarian aid. An initial assertion that discusses the past candidate that more digital communication between professional humanitarian relief agencies and the public contributes to increased efficiency of the traditional relief efforts. Past candidate based on the assumption that the crisis-affected population can provide information that is relevant for response prosecutors, in a manner that is faster and more cost-effective than ever before. In return, crisis victims fervent early response, and through that the taking over of control over the flow of information in response to prosecutors, they also have a greater influence on the welfare services tasks and priorities (Shkabatur 2012: 4). The author reviews the threats to the rainforests of Brazil and Central America by cattle raising for mostly US-based fast food chains and by efforts to solve the urban over-population by allowing large-scale resettling of marginal city populations in deforested areas. The author calls for international collaboration to prevent the destruction of the earth lungs in Amazonia

An introduction to the report Norwegian Self-Image and Norwegian Foreign Policy that describes similarities and differences between the image and foreign policy of Norway. Norwegian foreign policy has long been characterized by neutrality, compliance with international rules, moralization, internationalization and a focus on certain sectors. Geopolitics is one of these sectors and increasingly relevant in a world where countries are competing for natural resources to achieve energy security. While Norway portrays a good image by generously providing developmental and humanitarian aid and by maintaining a high profile in the UN, the country is also hurt by its high food tariffs, a strict immigration policy and its refusal to be part of the EU.
Animal Welfare Management in Norway is about how authorities can best promote high standards of well-being and respect for animals. In Norway, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority has primary responsibility for ensuring that businesses and persons comply with animal welfare laws and regulations.
This book presents the results of a unique research project on the effects of the Food Safety Authority's efforts within land-based food industries, in which key questions were: What kinds of regulatory measures and oversight are most effective? Is organizing all regulatory activity under one authority worthwhile? Is industry receptive to oversight? How can the authority utilize measures such as guidelines, warnings or punishment to best effect?
This book provides new insight into challenges associated with animal welfare management, an area that has previously been under-researched in Norway. The book is geared toward persons with supervisory roles as well as those working in industries that handle animals, but it will also be of interest to anyone concerned with animal welfare or oversight in general. The book can also be relevant for instruction at the higher educational level.
The contributors have backgrounds in political science, law, sociology, social anthropology, veterinary and other livestock-related fields, as well as inspection services. The book has been edited by Stig S. Gezelius, a professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway, and Frode Veggeland, a professor at the University of Oslo and senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO). The editors are experienced in research into public administration and implementation of legislation.
