When setting out this kind of considerations, we think of sport in general, rather than collective sports, but above all football, the most popular sport, the most watched sport on television, a sport which has been discovering the chronicality for almost 30 years, between hooligans and disasters such as that of Furiani, Bastia, or Hillsborough, Sheffield, when spectators die of a collapse of tribums or overcrowding of galleries. The aim of this article is to describe the different ways of being a spectator or a viewer, with the idea that, by doing so, football fans, supporters or fans are not very different from those attending concert halls or theatre halls more often than they want to believe: the search for sociability, the sharing of emotion and the desire to be recognised are drivers of engagement in all cultural practices, including sport. ; National audience Il existe des doutes sur la valeur du spectacle sportif. From the start of the field of sports history as a recognized academic endeavor in the early 1970s, one of the major areas of the genre has been to document how racial and ethnic minorities have played, participated in, and utilized sports for various purposes. In regard to American football, the volume of research is prodigious and many works have focused upon the role of African Americans and Native Americans in this sport (both at the professional and collegiate level). In addition to these groups, Gerald Gems's For Pride, Profit and Patriarchy demonstrates how the gridiron was utilized to transmit American cultural values to "white ethnics" who came to the United States in the early part of the 20th century (Gems 2000, cited under General Overviews). While much has been learned about the significance and history of football players of these backgrounds, Latinos and their contribution to the sport (at all levels) have generated far less academic interest.

The decision to enter a 'Team GB' in the Olympic football competition has provoked a furious debate within the home nations, with the decision of the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Ireland football authorities not to formally endorse the proposal. Issues of the nation state and national identity, and the politicisation of sport are examined in this case study.

Football has undergone a period of transformation over the last thirty years. Despite these global processes, different national leagues have adapted in different ways. After an initial period of success directly after Italia '90, Italian football has gone through a period of sustained crisis. It has been blighted by financial mismanagement, corruption scandals and fan violence. This has impacted Italy's ability to compete on a global stage. Football Italia accounts for the development of Italian football in relation to the wider global transformations impacting football and addresses the reasons for Serie A's initial success and current malaise. Theoretically, this book locates Italian football within the wider power network of the state and how this has impacted political engagement. After an historical overview of the Italian political economy, Football Italia highlights how football is part of the wider political network. Football clubs are owned by powerful businessmen (and they are all men) who are also politicians. This centralisation of power within a small hegemonic group inhibits change. Within this broader structure, wider corruption scandals continue; from regular match-fixing scandals to doping. Meanwhile, stadiums are crumbling and police over-aggressive. It is within this context that we must place the fans. Both the ultras and supporters who attend official supporters' clubs are disaffected and without the power to change the status quo. Consequently, Italian football has been in decline throughout the 21st century.

This article analyses 2500 responses from association football (soccer) fans to an anonymous online survey conducted from November 2011 to February 2012 that examined the extent of racism in British football. Eighty-three per cent of the participants stated that racism remains culturally embedded and when exploring the reasons behind its continuation from the 1970s and 1980s, Bourdieu's concepts of field and habitus proved useful for understanding why some white fans continue to express racist thoughts and behaviours at football. Central to this were explanations concerning class and education and how historical notions of whiteness remain culturally embedded for some supporters.

Résumé Le football, comme l'ensemble des sports, a connu des transformations économiques considérables durant les vingt dernières années, changeant la signification de la circulation de l'argent dans ce sport : la logique rationalisatrice de la rentabilisation a pris le pas sur celle du prestige et de la dépense. Si cette nouvelle logique peut contribuer à une moralisation de l'argent, elle n'échappe pas aux tentations de l'hybris et, surtout, elle met en cause l'existence des principes de base de ce qui fait la culture du football : l'incertitude et l'identification. Si l'idée d'une régulation du football a un sens, c'est moins dans l'idée d'une prohibition de cette rationalisation économique que dans celle d'un rappel permanent que le football vaut par sa capacité à mettre en scène les valeurs des sociétés modernes et contribue à les faire vivre.
