Describes the changing interpretations of sexuality & gender identity in the Ovambo societies of northern Namibia, which are caught between the Christian, traditional, & colonial discourses. The intricate relationship between egalitarian & antisexist provisions in the Namibian constitution, eg, the recent Married Persons Equality Act, & traditional structures in customary law is addressed. A case of premarital pregnancy in a customary court in Oshkati is described to show conflicts between contemporary practices & customary law arising from the sexuality of youth & unwed pregnancy. This is contrasted with the formation of traditional norms & views during colonial times, & the impact of Christian missionaries on these norms is assessed. Conflicts over initiation ceremonies in the Kwambi section of the Ovambo ethnic cluster show women's ambivalence, particularly in terms of power relations & control over female sexuality. It is concluded that tradition is an important & highly controversial issue in daily life & politics, & that research would benefit by shifting focus from the traditional law of chiefs toward living traditional law. 43 References.

Draws on theories of associative reflexivity from cognitive anthropology & fieldwork on the indigenous Q'eqchi'es of northern Guatemala to offer an interpretation of the meaning & function of ethnic & other identities. It is noted that, as postmodern theorists such as Zygmunt Baumann are arguing that overarching narratives of the self are no longer possible, ethnic identity is a strong force & the source of numerous political & military conflicts. Some theorists (eg, Anthony Giddens) resolve this apparent paradox by asserting that individuals retain the reflexive capacity to construct identity narratives, but such explanations often conflate reflexivity with rationality, thus neglecting associative reflexivity as a provider of nonfragmented identity. Fieldwork on the religious symbols & practices of the Q'eqchi'es informs an understanding of ethnic identity as a specific form of identification that interacts with other identificiations (especially gender, community, & class) to play a limited role in various lifeworld situations. 28 References. Taking two highly successful Austrian television programmes - the soap-opera Familie Leitner and the game-show Wünsch dir was - as case-studies, this article describes major shifts in Austrian culture in the 1960s and 1970s, which found their expression in changes in the television system. The discontinuation of the soap-opera on the one hand and the enormous success of the game-show on the other point to the existence of a slowly consolidating middle-class in Austria, for whom the idea of private consumption was closely linked to their sense of national identity in a modern, industrial welfare state. The basis for this identity was embodied in representations of the "television family" in the 1950s and 1960s. This image then took on a new, gender politically encoded quality at the start of the self-consciously "modern" 1970s in the form of the "game-show couple". ; Taking two highly successful Austrian television programmes - the soap-opera Familie Leitner and the game-show Wünsch dir was - as case-studies, this article describes major shifts in Austrian culture in the 1960s and 1970s, which found their expression in changes in the television system.
