Likestilling i akademia – fra kunnskap til endring
What is the state of gender equality in science and technology? Gender Equality in Academia – from Understanding to Change presents the results of a comprehensive research project and program of initiatives at the University of Oslo's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Researchers have examined gender equality within the department, looking at reasons for imbalance, and at what occurs when measures to promote equality are implemented. The book opens with an in-depth study of careers, gender issues and gender balance within academia. The study, based on questionnaires, interviews and follow-up evaluation, provides a new and updated understanding of the daily lives of academics in Norway. Among the topics covered are perceptions of equality and gender balance, effects of male dominance, sexual harassment, gender with respect to publishing, and the relationship between gender and diversity. In addition to presenting new empirical data, the book is also an innovative contribution to theoretical development within gender equality research. In the second part of the book, the authors present three working models that elucidate current mechanisms recreating gender imbalance, and challenges for gender equality. The book's final part consists of analyses of measures taken to increase gender equality within the department and their effects, and what an organization can do to increase gender equality. The range of topics in this book make it relevant for all those concerned with gender equality in research and higher education. Researchers, administrators, students, other practitioners, and politicians will all find this book of interest.Øystein Gullvåg Holter is a professor emeritus at the University of Oslo's Centre for Gender Research. Lotta Snickare is a researcher at both the University of Oslo's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.; Hvordan står det til med likestillingen innenfor realfag og teknologi?
In: Internasjonal politikk, Band 64, Heft 1, S. 7-28
ISSN: 0020-577X
In this article, the 9/11 events are analysed from a gender perspective -- both the terror attacks & the military responses upon them. Gender is shown to be relevant in several aspects, as gendered arguments have been used to justify acts of violence on both sides. Concerning the cultural construction of femininity, women were made invisible in the Western media debate that followed upon the terror attacks. At the same time, Afghan women were constructed as victims & became the alibi for the American military responses to the 9/11 attacks. Further, cultural gender norms of masculinity coloured the American rhetoric that justified the wars in both Afghanistan & Iraq. Finally, the analysis in the article shows how the terror attacks might be interpreted as a way to (re)construct a masculinity men in certain contexts might feel they are entitled to, after an experienced emasculation. The conclusion in the article is that a gender analysis deepens our understanding of the war on terrorism, & at the same time it shows how gender has become a central aspect of global politics.

ISSN: 0020-577X
What does it mean for a military operation when a gender perspective based on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 should be integrated in the daily work? The question is interesting if one considers that such 'gender integration' has to take place on every level of this male-dominated institution. This article study of the gender-integration process in the 2008 Nordic Battlegroup and connects the analysis of the process with ongoing national and international developments. In interpreting the content of the resolution in practical assignments and capacity building it is found that ambiguous interpretations at the highest levels have resulted in difficult decisions and conflict at the lower levels. Moreover, gender integration is caught up in discussions related to professional identity. To some extent the approach to connect resolution 1325 with 'operational effectiveness' is resulting in decreasing resistance. Adapted from the source document.

A feature of our time has been marked interest in celebrity and celebrities of all kinds. Celebrities associated with the entertainment industry and, paradoxically, it is their life that attracts the most interest among the fans, rather than their professional successes and artistic expression pressure (Turner 2007: 5). Huge celebrity reportage focuses on the person's external attributes but also their global activism. Celebrity views on war, peace, gender equality, poverty reduction, debt relief and HIV/AIDS are among the things that make large space in the media and social networks. Facebook and Twitter make it possible for celebrities to quickly communicate their message to the fans and other interested audiences. Adapted from the source document.
Vold i nære relasjoner i et mangfoldig Norge
"Research, politics and activism have traditionally emphasized gender in understanding and combating domestic violence. In recent years, however, increasing attention has been placed on other social factors.
This anthology presents new research that elucidates domestic violence from more diverse perspectives. In the nine chapters, the contributors analyze how types and degrees of violence and abuse can vary depending upon the interplay between such different factors as class, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. An overarching theme is how we understand and talk about equality, difference and diversity.
The book does not provide an exhaustive analysis of violence in today's multi-cultural Norway, yet it is the first Norwegian book about domestic violence that has diversity as a primary them. The book will be of interest to researchers, students, employees in social services and support organizations and anyone concerned about domestic violence and abuse."
C. S. I. Monrovia? Liberia a la carte og bekjempelsen av sekularisert vold
In: Internasjonal politikk, Band 68, Heft 2, S. 287-294
ISSN: 0020-577X
After the Liberian war ended in 2003, national and international actors have been unified behind the battle against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). While Liberia is still suffering from general violence, SGBV is leading the dark statistics with a wide margin. The problem runs deep in the Liberian society and international actors have had a hard time changing the situation because they do not understand Liberian legal praxis and the local governments suffers from both lack of knowledge and structural problems. Despite meager results the project has been seen as a success. Rape was criminalized in 2005 and the United Nation's Security Council resolution 1325 was implemented, both significantly increasing the rights of women and children. L. Pitkaniemi

Ungdommen
How have smart phones and social media changed life for young people today? Why do we get irritated when boys are in trouble, but worried when girls are? How do Muslim youth really feel about being called a 'goddamned terrorist'?YOUTH reveals what it's like to be a young person in today's world. We gain new empirical information on life within the context of family, school, and sports. We are invited to drinking parties where sexual boundaries are tested. We also tag along with a group of guys on a hunting trip where the shotgun shells are high gauge. And: Is it true that rates of anxiety and depression have increased? Or that gender identity has become so fluid that more and more young people believe they are neither 'girl' nor 'boy'?The book details some distinct trends – a school that disciplines students in new ways, less alcohol consumption and problematic behavior, disinclination toward early sex. We also see a fascinating political activism. It is the young who are on the frontlines of the climate crisis battle.Publication of YOUTH also marks the 30th anniversary of the leading center for youth research in Norway, established at NOVA, the Norwegian Social Research institute at Oslo Metropolitan University. This book will be relevant to researchers, students, teachers and all those who work on behalf of young people from the national to the local level, as well as politicians, journalists and others interested in research-based information about how young people actually live today.Guro Ødegård is a senior researcher and institute leader at OsloMet's Norwegian Social Research institute, NOVA. Willy Pedersen is professor of sociology at the University of and a NOVA affiliate.; Hvordan har smarttelefonen og sosiale medier endret livet til dagens unge?
