This contribution aims to give an overview on the state of the art of research on terrorism and gender in the field of Political Science and International Relations (IR). Contemporary analyses of terrorism have begun integrating gender aspects into their frameworks. This article supports the call for a much more coherent use of gender as an analytical category as this is beneficial for the analysis of ter-rorism in a threefold manner. First, gender as an analytical category in the study of terrorism exposes the gender blindness of the term terrorism; second, gender challenges the political myth of protection central to international politics, i.e. that states can legitimately fight wars to protect the vulnerable – vulgo women and children. Third, gender also challenges the myth of an intrinsic peacefulness/vulnerability of women. The paper closes with the plea to integrate a coherent historical dimension into a gendered analysis of terrorism in order to potentially achieve a more empirically attuned theoretical understanding of terrorism and political violence in current times.

Margit Schratzenstaller beschreibt, was zum Gender Budgeting gehört." (Autorenreferat)

GENDER JUSTICE is an avowedly liberal tract on the problems of gender discrimination in our society. It seeks to provide an alternative to the visions of both conservatives and radical feminists. The book fails in its liberal mission for some of the same reasons that the new breed of Democrats cannot seem to raise much of a challenge to the Republican ideology currently sweeping the country. The authors endorse many of the policies advocated by conservatives-- they reject affirmative action and comparable worth, for example-- but they do so by means of a liberal, process-oriented approach.

Taking a cross-disciplinary approach, Suzanne Romaine's main concern is to show how language and discourse play key roles in understanding and communicating gender and culture. In addition to linguistics--which provides the starting point and central focu

Why is a focus on gender so important for interpreting the world in which we live? Sixteen world-famous scholars have been brought together to address this question from their respective fields: Political Theory, Philosophy, Medical Anthropology, Law, Geography, Islamic Studies, Cultural Studies, Philosophy of Science, Literature, Psychoanalysis, History of Art, Education and Economics. The resulting volume covers an extraordinary array of contexts, ranging from rethinking trans* bodies, to traumatized tribal communities, to sexualized violence, to assisted reproductive technologies, to the implications of epigenetics for understanding gender, and yet they are all connected by their focus on the importance of gender as a category of analysis. The publication of this volume celebrates the anniversary of the launch of the Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Cambridge, and features contributions from past and future Diane Middlebrook and Carl Djerassi Visiting Professors to the University.

Industrial society, or the regime of scarcity, is contrasted with the regime of gender that existed before it. In industrial society, human beings are defined as neutral entities on which the characteristic of sex has been superimposed; in all such societies, women are relatively disadvantaged. This is true equally in the reported economy, the unreported economy, & the nether economy of household production. It does not appear possible to end sexual inequality within industrial society. In preindustrial society, in contrast, almost no work existed that could be done by both men & women; the two did not even use the same tools. This is part of a category that can be called gender, which is distinct from sex & establishes two parallel social realities of men & of women. Vernacular culture is wholly organized around gender differences; this encompasses tools, economies, kinship, & marriage. Both space & time are divided between genders. The modern environment, in contrast, does not make allowance for separate realms of men & women, & in particular does not allow birth to take place in a separate domain of women. Interpretations of these past societies, insofar as they are based on sex rather than on gender, are unavoidably misleading. There appears to be no way in which industrial society's destruction of gender can be reversed, but the loss needs to be recognized if accurate social thought is to be possible. W. H. Stoddard.
