"Great changes took place during the period in which the eleventh Europan competition was held. If, during the formulation of the assignment, there was still some talk of a "temporary dip" in the economy, during the adjudication - almost two years later - a transformation had evidently taken place and a new era had dawned for the planning of the urban environment. The change can be summarised in the creed "from master plan to strategy". This is clearly manifest in the entries for 'Europan 11', accounts of which are presented in this publication. The various plans for the Dutch sites in Almere, Amsterdam, Capelle aan den IJssel, Deventer, Eindhoven and Leeuwarden are displayed and members of the jury and other prominent experts examine the results of the competition and their significance for the spatial quality of the built environment - now and in the future. Summary Depressive symptoms among Turkish and Moroccan migrants in the Netherlands: the impact of disintegration and locus of controlPrevious research showed that especially Turkish and Moroccan migrants in the Netherlands run a higher risk of experiencing
symptoms of a depressive disorder than indigenous Dutch people. In this study we aim to explain why some Turkish and Moroccan migrants experience these symptoms of depressive disorder to a higher degree than other members of these groups. We used cross-sectional data from the Dutch Life Course
Study (Nederlandse Levensloop Studie). Although one indicator of social disintegration, experienced loneliness, appeared to be the most important predictor for symptoms of a depressive disorder among these migrant groups, indicators of economic and psychological disintegration were also clear
predictors for these symptoms. However, psychological disintegration, which we theorized to be the final stage of integration and therefore serves as a mediator, was unable to explain the relationships of economic and social disintegration with depressive symptoms. Moreover, taking the locus
of control into account, appeared to provide important nuances for interpreting these effects: for those who experience more control over their lives, disintegration in the domains mentioned is less strongly linked with depressive symptoms than for those who experience less control over their
lives.

Abstract Scholarly attention for the position of older Moroccan and Turkish migrants has been rising in recent years. The focus lies on their relatively high vulnerability, as compared to non-migrant older Dutch their financial situation and living conditions are less comfortable
and they have more physical and psychosocial health problems. Still, they have benefited from taking the step to migrate. Compared to age peers in the home country they are more prosperous and have access to better medical care, their (grand)children can look forward to a better future, and
there is more space for personal freedom here. Moreover, the general picture of vulnerability does not do justice to the many older Moroccan and Turkish migrants who do have the right resources to grow old in a resilient manner. There is also increasing attention for the best type of care
for those who need it the most. The dominant norm within the Moroccan and Turkish communities of children being their parents' caregivers is increasingly clashing with the busy professional and family lives of the informal carers. One has to learn to accept that informal care is not
always the only good or even the most suitable type of care. The current problem is that although there are culture-specific and multicultural (residential) care facilities, these are not enough to meet future care demands. Structurally fostering cultural sensitivity in regular care institutions
is really needed too. A hallmark showing that migrant-friendly policies are being implemented can speed up this process.

The nature of immigrant entrepreneurship is changing in Dutch society. Nowadays, many immigrant entrepreneurs start businesses in producer and personal services instead of more traditional sectors such as retail or hotel and catering. At the same time, a growing number of second-generation immigrants are setting up their own firms in the Netherlands. These second-generation immigrants-born and/or raised in the receiving country-are following different trajectories in comparison with first-generation immigrant entrepreneurs, indeed displaying a move away from traditional immigrant niches. Yet studies on second-generation immigrant entrepreneurs remain limited in both the Dutch and international literature on this subject. This study presents one of the first explicit comparisons between first and second-generation self-employed immigrants. The embeddedness of immigrants in local and transnational networks and the dynamics of the markets in which these entrepreneurs are active are examined based on in-depth interviews with immigrant entrepreneurs in Dutch cities. In doing so, this study provides a vivid, longitudinal view of first and second-generation immigrant entrepreneurs, their incorporation into Dutch society, their businesses and business development(s). - Migranten van de tweede generatie in Nederland blijken als ondernemer aanmerkelijk succesvoller dan hun collega's van de eerste generatie. Dit blijkt uit de studie Dynamic Entrepreneurship van Katja Rusinovic. Rusinovic volgde voor haar promotieonderzoek langdurig eerste en tweede generatie migrantenondernemers in de vier grote steden. De resultaten van Rusinovic' studie laten zien dat de overlevingskansen van de tweede generatie groter zijn dan van eerste generatie migranten. Migranten van de tweede generatie vinden vaker hun weg naar financiële en andere (overheids)instanties waardoor zij minder afhankelijk zijn van steun uit eigen kring dan eerste generatie migranten. Ook richt de tweede generatie zich voornamelijk op klanten buiten de eigen etnische gemeenschap. Zakelijke contacten in het herkomstland blijven voor zowel de eerste als de tweede generatie een rol van betekenis spelen. Met hun sector keuze, hun oriëntatie op de Nederlandse samenleving, hun dynamiek en kansen op economisch succes maakt de tweede generatie een drastische bijstelling van het traditionele beeld van migrantenondernemers noodzakelijk.

The Dutch second generation of Turkish and Moroccan origin is coming of age and making a transition from education to the labour market. This first publication of the TIES Project (Towards the Integration of the European Second Generation) studies the social situation and views of this ethnic group, drawing on the research carried out in Amsterdam and Rotterdam in 2006-07 among the Dutch-born children of immigrants from Turkey and Morocco and a comparison group of young people (age 18-35) whose parents were born in the Netherlands. - De Nederlandse tweede generatie van Turkse en Marokkaanse afkomst is volwassen aan het worden en de oudere cohorten van deze nog jonge populatie hebben inmiddels de overstap van het onderwijs naar de arbeidsmarkt gemaakt. Dit betekent dat nu gekeken kan worden naar de positie die deze tweede generatie inneemt in de Nederlandse samenleving. Deze eerste publicatie van het TIES project (Towards the Integration of the European Second Generation) behandelt een verscheidenheid aan onderwerpen met als doel de situatie en de denkbeelden van en over deze groepen in Amsterdam en Rotterdam in beeld te brengen.

Here, well-known cohorts of Rembrandt are examined for the ways in which they expressed themselves by defying conservative values and norms. This study reveals how these young men rebelled, breaking from previous generations: letting their hair grow long, wearing colorful clothing, drinking excessively, challenging city guards, being promiscuous, smoking, and singing lewd songs. Stel een regieorgaan in dat de voorstellen toetst. Versterk de kansen op tweede geldstroomonderzoek voor geesteswetenschappers. En ontwikkel een adequate kwaliteitsbeoordeling voor hun prestaties. Dat zijn de belangrijkste aanbevelingen uit het rapport van de commissie Nationaal Plan Toekomst Geesteswetenschappen onder voorzitterschap van Job Cohen. Hij heeft het eindrapport vanmorgen overhandigd aan minister Ronald Plasterk, die een jaar geleden de opdracht gaf voor het opstellen van dit advies. Op het eerste gezicht lijken de geesteswetenschappen er in Nederland goed voor te staan. Het aantal studenten groeit, het onderzoek is hoogwaardig en er is sprake van een groeiende maatschappelijke belangstelling voor de producten van het geesteswetenschappelijk onderzoek. Deze ogenschijnlijke bloei kan niet verhullen dat zich ernstige problemen voordoen die de toekomst van de geesteswetenschappen bedreigen. Zo kon afgelopen jaren ondanks de stijging van het aantal studenten niet of nauwelijks in extra personeel worden geïnvesteerd. Een sterke verslechtering van de stafstudentratio en toenemende druk op onderzoekstijd zijn het gevolg. Ook voor het opleiden van de toekomstige generatie wetenschappers ontbreekt het aan financiële ruimte. Gevolg is dat de pool van kandidaten om de huidige generatie wetenschappelijke staf op te volgen steeds kleiner wordt, wat op termijn de kwaliteit van het hele wetenschapsgebied bedreigt. De commissie stelt voor om een deskundig en gezaghebbend regieorgaan in te stel-len. Dat beheert een speciaal budget waarop de geesteswetenschappelijke faculteiten een beroep kunnen doen met een overtuigend toekomstplan. Dat plan moet de verschillende deelproblemen (zoals versnippering van het onderwijsaanbod, geringe maatschappelijke uitstraling, lage onderwijsrendementen, betere doorstroming van jong talent in vaste wetenschappelijke rangen etc.) stevig aanpakken. In januari 2011 is professor Marc A. Huybrechts 70 jaar geworden. De editors van dit boek vonden het dan ook passend om hem ter gelegenheid van deze verjaardag een huldeboek aan te bieden. Dit huldeboek is méér dan een Liber amicorum. Dit boek wil tegelijk een blijk van vriendschap aan de gevierde en een hulde aan deze schitterende jurist zijn. De gevierde heeft zich op verschillende gebieden ingezet, altijd met de bedoeling dat iedereen er baat bij zou hebben. Allereerst in het onderwijs: op onvermoeibare wijze heeft hij meerdere generaties van juristen laten kennismaken met de wondere wereld van het recht. Hij wees er steeds op dat een jurist verder moet kijken dan zijn eigen rechtstelsel, wat tegelijkertijd een verrijkend en relativerend inzicht in het recht geeft

Paradoxes of Social Capital critically examines the robustness of social capital theory as an analytical tool in explaining the various 'integration' patterns amongst Moroccans in London. The book also considers how structural factors impact on the ways in which Moroccans - across generations - sustain, access and use social capital at the levels of family, ethnic community, migrant associations and schools. Furthermore, this research elaborates on how social capital serves as an identity (re)source that is continuously negotiated and redefined through (in)active group (family, ethnic, religious and national) memberships. An original model of studying the second-generation processes of adaptation - viewed as 'transversal adaptation'- is also introduced, shifting the focus from predetermined 'integration' patterns to a circular and a longitudinal approach to 'integration', where new opportunities and constraints emerge, structured by the temporal flow of life trajectories. - Paradoxes of Social Capital bestudeert de plaatsing van het sociale kapitaal om de samenhang en integratie van drie generaties Marokkanen in Londen te evalueren.
