"Genre" is a formal variable that describes the form of presentation or type of a news item. Some studies use the label "genre" when collecting the addressed social sphere of a news item, although we recommend using the variable "news section" for this purpose. Field of application/theoretical foundation: The variable can be used for content analyses of print, broadcast or online media. It is an important part of a codebook, as it provides important context information of the analyzed news item. Also, it helps to categorize other (latent) variables. References/combination with other methods of data collection: Sometimes the variable can be accessed through common databases like Factiva or LexisNexis. The variable can be easily combined with any other type of variable collected through automated or manual content analysis.
Bringing together the papers presented at the international symposium 'The genre the work' in September 2011, the three volumes entitled Receptions, Creations and Representations offer the reader a rich panorama and varies on gender problematic in the art worlds . Diversity of research topics, literature to cinema, through dance, photography and theater; diversity of approaches, the biography has the statistical survey, through the analysis of documents; diversity of disciplines, from sociology musicology, through philosophy and history. This non-exhaustive list of tools to emerge as apprehend gender in its complexity, to grasp the social construction process but also to constant redefinition of gender categories. Despite the wealth of content, we may regret the absence of a general introduction and/or presentation of the three volumes - apart from brief editorial reproduced at the beginning of each volume - in order to clarify the central problematic, d 'to show the consistency, to justify the allocation of items. In view of the proposed communications, answering a call inviting auteur.es was 'exploring genres reports through the production, reception and mediation of a work of art - a show, a book, a plant or a film, for example 'it begs the question of the relevance of the division between Receptions, Creations and Representations. Indeed, a majority of products responds to these three themes and could, therefore, be included in each volume. Here we propose to deliver a Cross reading the three volumes through the prism of different scales of analysis mobilized by the author. Adapted from the source document.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to account for the genre characteristics of non‐linear, multi‐modal, web‐mediated documents. It involves a two‐dimensional view on genres that allows one to account for the fact that digital genres act not only as text but also as medium.Design/methodology/approachThe theoretical framework of the article is the Swalesian genre theory used in academic settings all over the world to investigate the relationship between discourse and social practice and to teach genre conventions to students of language and communication. Up till now most genre research has focused on the characteristics of "printed" texts, whereas less has been done to apply the genre theory to digital genres.FindingsThe article discusses the characteristics of digital genres, notably the media constraints that have a significant effect on the production and reception of digital genres and suggests an extension of the Swalesian genre model that takes the digital characteristics into account.Research limitations/implicationsThe suggestion for a revised genre model is not based on an extensive empirical study of various types of web sites. The observation is restricted to a limited number of commercial web sites.Originality/valueThe article proposes new insights into the concept of genre adapting traditional models of genre theory to web‐mediated texts. A revised two‐dimensional genre model incorporating media elements into the concept of genre thus takes account of the particular characteristics of the navigation and reading elements of web‐mediated genres.
