The 1967 unification of Saint-Malo, Saint-Servan, and Paramé began an eventful period of municipal history, involving the conflicting effects of national politics, cultural traditions and resistance to politicized local ballots. One cannot explain the intense local political struggles, nor understand the complex link between national issues and debates on the one hand, and the attitudes of candidates and voters on the other, without an intimate knowledge of the political environment and careful reading of the speeches.
