Die Gold-Frontier in Südafrika ; The Gold Frontier in South Africa
The Gold Frontier in South Africa. This paper uses the concept of commodity frontiers to compare the expansions and contractions of the South African gold frontier. Similarities and differences to its counterparts in the USA or Australia become visible in the South African gold frontier's rapid industrialization, massive exploitation of low-skilled workers and tremendous damage to the natural environment. In addition to these regional factors, the approach also shows to what extent the gold economy has its own specific functional interrelations. Finally, the study also demonstrates how global changes and local dynamics can interact in very different and sometimes unexpected ways. ; The Gold Frontier in South Africa.
; The starting point of this work is the global gold rush, which was caused by the financial and currency crisis of recent years. The prospective opening of a gold mine threatens the Romanian village of Ro?ia Montan? with its destruction. I have conducted ethnographic research into the ongoing conflict over this controversial gold mining project, which is backed by a consortium of international investors. My research has illuminated many possible cultural and social transformations for the post-socialist village of Ro?ia Montan?. The local economy of Ro?ia Montan? is legally restricted to gold mining. The international mining company promises a better life for the village by creating well-paid jobs and economic incentives, but many of Ro?ia Montan?'s residents distrust these promises. From the beginning of the planning phase, a group of concerned citizens have been determined to prevent the project from going forward. This group's design and strategies reveal divergent individual lifestyles and shifting cultural attitudes in the region. Ro?ia Montan?'s conflict serves as a microcosm for the wider transformations taking place across post-socialist South-Eastern Europe. Political and economic structures have changed with the shift to a market economy, and this has resulted in the loss of social position and cultural designation for many people. Ro?ia Montan? has become a hybrid place, embedded within a neo-liberal present, yet unwilling or unable to break from its socialist past. Although the socio-political environment has changed, many communities and individuals find strength in previously established cultural structures.
