Although some well-known female journalists actively collaborated in prestigious publications in the first years of the last century, they very rarely obtained the excellent publicity that writers received through newspapers and magazines. It was not until the Second Spanish Republic that women started to stand out in the field of journalism. They did not only stand out as writers, but also as illustrators, cartoonists and photographers in response to the demand emerging as a consequence of the interests and attitudes of a new, more popular public. This public began to conceive the press not only as a means of information or political propaganda, but also as a convenient resource for entertainment that reflected the identity changes occurring with regard to the roles of both sexes. ; A pesar de que durante los primeros años de la pasada centuria, afamadas periodistas colaboraban activamente en publicaciones de prestigio, salvo contadas ocasiones, nunca se vieron obsequiadas con la magnífica publicidad que los periódicos y revistas daban a los escritores. No fue hasta la llegada de la República cuando las mujeres empezaron a destacar dentro del periodismo. Éstas, no lo hicieron sólo como escritoras, sino también como ilustradoras, dibujantes y fotógrafas, las cuales, respondieron a la demanda que surgía en torno a los intereses y las actitudes de un público nuevo, más popular, que empezaba a concebir a la prensa no sólo como un simple medio de información o propaganda política, sino, además, como un cómodo recurso para el entretenimiento donde quedaban expuestos los cambios identitarios acaecidos en torno al rol de los sexos.

As an ethnic church, it has served the role of social and religious functions in order to help create and maintain the diaspora as a nonstate, nonpolitical institution. This thesis focuses on the narrative of identity that the Korean diaspora in Japan has created through the Korean Christian Church in Japan, and the ethnic survival of the diaspora through these lenses. The ethnic survival of the Korean diaspora focuses on the boundaries of the diaspora itself. By defining these boundaries as solely Zainichi-Korean, there exist a separate diasporic identity for Zainichi-Koreans and Korean newcomers to Japan. Im Zentrum dieser literaturwissenschaftlichen Arbeit steht der "homo migrans" (Klaus Bade). Dieser ist nicht ein Typus, sondern vielmehr Sammelbegriff verschiedenster Länder, Kulturen und Sprachen querender Figuren der Bewegung: eurokoloniale Rück- und postkoloniale Zuwanderer, Asylbewerber, politische Dissidenten, Glaubensflüchtlinge, Arbeitsmigranten, Familiennachzügler und Aussiedler. Sie alle bewegen sich transnational und häufig interkontinental über und zwischen Grenzräumen. Unter dem Eindruck einer erneuten Beschleunigung globaler Migrationsprozesse ist es daher aus der Perspektive der Literaturwissenschaft entscheidend, sich zeitgenössischen Literaturen zu stellen, deren Autorschaft in genau jener kritischen wie produktiven Dynamik von Ortswechsel, Ent- und Reterritorialisierung, Heimatverlust und Herkunftsentwürfen stattfindet. Anhand ausgewählter Texte der deutschsprachigen Schriftstellerin ungarischer Herkunft Terézia Mora und des mexikanischen Schriftstellers italienischer Herkunft Fabio Morábito soll verdeutlicht werden, mit welch unterschiedlichen auktorialen Vorraussetzungen, produktionsästhetischen Strategien und leitmotivischen Schwerpunkten literarische Gegenwelten der Migration, der Fremd- und Selbsterfahrung erzeugt werden. So entstehen aus dem Innern eines als vielfach fremd empfundenen urbanen Lebensraums Zwischenweltfiguren und Bewegungsmuster, die zu analysieren sich allemal lohnt, wenn es darum gehen soll, mit den Mitteln der Literatur als Speicher von "Lebenswissen" (Ottmar Ette) zu einem tieferen Verständnis dieser – ökonomisch wie kulturell wie analytisch – immer wichtiger werdenden Wissensressourcen vorzudringen. Die Analyse berücksichtigt bei beiden Autoren das bisher publizierte, literarische Gesamtwerk, setzt aber deutliche Schwerpunkte bei Terézia Moras Roman 'Alle Tage' und bei Fabio Morábitos Erzählband 'También Berlín se olvida', unter besonderer Berücksichtigung seiner umfangreichen, für das vorliegende Thema sehr ergiebigen Lyrik. ; The main focus of this master's thesis in literary studies is the 'homo migrans' (Klaus Bade). This entity is not a uniform archetype of migration, but a conglomeration of subjects who traverse a diverse range of countries, cultures and languages: the eurocolonial and postcolonial migrant, the asylum seeker, the dissident, the labor or family migrant, the refugee, the ethnic repatriate. They all share transnational and often intercontinental paths of trans-border movement. In light of the perpetual acceleration of global migration, it is of crucial importance that the humanities confront and discuss contemporary literature, which deals with the critical and productive dynamics of delocalization, de- and reterritorialization, the loss of homeland and the multiple constructions of belonging. In this thesis, selected works by the German-Hungarian author Terézia Mora and the Mexican-Italian author Fabio Morábito are analyzed to demonstrate the diverse auctorial conditions, aesthetic strategies and leitmotifs that produce literary counterworlds of migration, oscillating conceptions of identity and alienation. From within urban spaces that are oftentimes estranging, perspectives emerge of liminal identities that navigate between different worlds. As the analyses of Mora and Morábito illustrate, modes of identity and movement are literary expressions of 'Lebenswissen' (Ottmar Ette). They are therefore an invaluable contribution to our understanding of migration, in an economic, cultural, as well as analytical sense. The thesis takes into account the complete series of literary works that the two authors published until 2006. However, its focal points are Terézia Mora's novel 'Alle Tage', as well as the short stories of 'También Berlín se olvida' and the lyrical oeuvre of Fabio Morábito.

The given study is focused on the history of the tradition of translations of the Qur'an into Spanish during the period of XV–XX centuries in the context of the process of acknowledgement and construction of the inclusive pluri- religious and pluri- lingual identity of the Spanish people. The examination of the evolution of this phenomenon during this historical period has shown that it can be divided into four major stages. The early stage (XV–XVII centuries) is characterized by positive trends, while in the following period (XVII–XIX centuries) the tradition was interrupted by the expulsion of Spanish Muslims from the areas of their historical residency. The tradition of translations was reborn in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in the context of the renaissance of the Muslim community in Spain. As a result of these processes, today, in the twenty- first century, the tradition of translation of the Qur'an into Spanish constitutes an integral part of the spiritual life of Spain, strongly contributing to a successful and genuine inter- religious dialogue and cooperation.

Political scientists who have conducted research abroad experience excitement as well as great disappointment. Meeting and utilizing the help of knowledgeable, responsive interviewees can be exhilarating; yet a cancelled interview, illness, and lack of funds dampens the social scientific enterprise. In this symposium, we discuss the nuts and bolts of field research and we explore the constraints and opportunities that arise from the interaction of researchers' personal identities (gender, race, class, religion, nationality, and age) and their research context. We contend that most training received before fieldwork focuses little, if at all, on the personal consequences of leaving one's home for a year, trying to integrate into another culture, and facing (mis)perceptions based on one's identity. As the quotations above indicate, the symposium hopes to demonstrate how a researcher can be gutsy in the uncharted waters of fieldwork, especially with interactions pertaining to one's identities. Although we acknowledge that no preparation will entirely eradicate disappointing days in the field and misperceptions of identity, we encourage new field researchers and graduate students to be aware that the process of accessing data abroad is an intensely personal one. The symposium contributors are comparativists, mainly at the career stages of assistant professor and recently tenured professor, who have researched in Argentina, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Ethiopia, France, India, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Mozambique, Peru, Poland, Russia, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The article analyzes the current state of ensuring the right to sexual orientation and gender identity, analyzes regulations, examines the statistics of criminal offenses on this issue.To achieve this goal, an analysis of current legislation on the grounds for criminal liability for violation of the rights to sexual orientation and gender identity, examined the results of court proceedings, identified motives for bias.It is established that there is no aggravating circumstance for violation of the right to sexual orientation and gender identity in the Criminal Code of Ukraine.The study showed that the current legislation of Ukraine on criminal liability for violation of the rights to sexual orientation and gender identity does not provide a proper solution to this problem. However, given the need for timely decision-making on this issue, there are reasonable proposals: to expand the list of «protected features» that are subject to protection, in particular criminal law; clearly define sexual orientation and gender identity as «protected traits»; to supplement the list of circumstances that aggravate the punishment provided for in paragraph 3 of Part 1 of Art. 67 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the grounds for committing criminal offenses based on hatred of sexual orientation and gender identity; for the correct functioning of the provisions of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, it is necessary to give a clear definition of such phenomena as: «intolerance», «sexual orientation», «gender identity» at the legislative level, which will prevent the abuse of these concepts.Keywords: intolerance, sexual orientation, gender identity, criminal offenses of hatred, protected traits, violations of rights, motives for prejudice ; У статті аналізується сучасний стан забезпечення права на сексуальну орієнтацію та гендерну ідентичність, проаналізовано нормативно-правові акти, досліджена статистика кримінальних правопорушень із зазначеної проблеми.Для досягнення поставленої у роботі мети проведено аналіз діючого законодавства щодо підстав встановлення кримінальної відповідальності за порушення прав на сексуальну орієнтацію та гендерну ідентичність, досліджено результати розгляду судових справ, визначено мотиви упередженості .Встановлено, що обтяжуюча обставина за порушення права на сексуальну орієнтацію та гендерну ідентичність в КК України відсутня.Проведене дослідження засвідчило, що чинне законодавство України щодо визначення кримінальної відповідальності за порушення прав на сексуальну орієнтацію та ґендерну ідентичність не забезпечує належне вирішення цієї проблеми. Проте, зважаючи на необхідність здійснення своєчасного прийняття рішень з цього питання обґрунтовані пропозиції: розширити перелік «захищених ознак», які підлягають охороні, зокрема кримінальним законодавством; чітко визначити сексуальну орієнтацію та ґендерну ідентичність як «захищених ознак»; доповнити перелік обставин, які обтяжують покарання, передбачених п. 3 ч.1ст. 67 КК України, підставами скоєння кримінальних правопорушень на ґрунті ненависті до сексуальної орієнтації та ґендерної ідентичності; для коректного функціонування положень КК України необхідно дати чітке визначення таким явищам, як: «нетерпимість», «сексуальна орієнтація», «гендерна ідентичність» на законодавчому рівні, що унеможливить зловживання даними поняттями.Ключові слова: нетерпимість, сексуальна орієнтація, гендерна ідентичність, кримінальні правопорушення ненависті, захищені ознаки, порушення прав, мотиви упередження

The definition of the EU as a constitutional legal order is crucial, but still fragmented. For the sake of systematization, it is important to find out a principle to support its development. That is why we made the choice of examining the principle of non discrimination through the analysis of case law, with the object of verifying if this principle is a fundamental part of the EU constitutional identity. In the first part of this work the structure of the discrimination scrutiny in front of the CJEU and of the ECHR is analyzed, enlightening the fact that its structure increasingly recalls that of a constitutional scrutiny. In the second part of this work we will focus on the contribution given by the case law on the fight against different grounds of discrimination to the EU constitutional identity. As there is an increasing number of grounds of discrimination, a choice should be made. That is why the second part of the analysis is devoted into explaining a selection of grounds of discrimination: discrimination on the ground of nationality, age, disability, religion, and sexual orientation. From the analysis of the case law and of secondary legislation is possible to induce that this principle has the potential necessary to support the development of the EU constitutional identity without prevailing on the national constitutional identities. At the same time, the principle could help into shading light in one of the most debated issues of EU law: the tension between the conferred powers and the direct effect of directives. The conclusion of this work is a reflection on how a precise line of case law is crucial into defining the principle of non discrimination as a EU constitutional principle. ; L'objectif de cette recherche est d'évaluer la contribution du principe de non-discrimination à l'identité constitutionnelle de l'Union européenne. Поразка підтримуваних Росією політичних сил під час президентської кампанії 2004 р. та масова мобілізація українських громадян на захист демократії, європейського вибору та суверенності держави змусила Кремль перейти у Донецькому краї до більш жорсткого сценарію реалізації своєї політики. Вибір на користь агресивних стратегій був зумовлений також і тим, що події Помаранчевої революції змусили російських імперіалістів переконатися: сподівання на появу в Донецькій та Луганській областях хоча б якоюсь мірою дієвого сепаратистського руху будуть мати шанс на реалізацію тільки за умови, коли проросійські групи фінансуватимуться безпосередньо Кремлем та спиратимуться на його організаційно-політичну підтримку. Із цією метою у 2005 р. було створене повністю підконтрольне російським спецслужбам т. зв. «Общественное движение «Донецкая республика», яке «спеціалізувалося» на галасливих антиукраїнських провокаціях, подібних до фейкового проголошення у лютому 2009 р. т. зв. «независимости Донецка»: не випадковим бачиться той факт, що у терористичній «ДНР» саме «Донецкая республика» стала правлячою політичною групою.Ідеологічною парадигмою, покликаною як легітимізувати російський вплив у регіоні, так і забезпечити всевладдя в шахтарському краї кримінально-олігархічного керівництва Партії регіонів, стала концепція «донецької ідентичності», згідно з якою інтереси мешканців Донеччини цілковито протилежні інтересам галичан та наддніпрянців. Засадниче заперечення ідеї соборності України стало найважливішим методом маніпулювання свідомістю донеччан.Активісти українських громадсько-політичних та культуро-просвітницьких організацій, правозахисники, члени незалежних профспілок упродовж 2005 – 2013 рр. доклали на Донеччині великих зусиль для поборювання впливів Кремля та його сателітів, одначе їхні зусилля не знаходили належної підтримки у владних кабінетах Києва. ; The defeat encountered by the political powers supported by Russia during the presidential campaign in 2004, as well as the mass mobilization of the Ukrainian citizens for the defense of democracy, the European choice, and state sovereignty, made the Kremlin proceed to a more cruel scenario for implementing its policy in Donetsk region. The choice in favor of the aggressive strategies was also caused by the fact that the events of the Orange Revolution convinced Russian imperialists in the following: the hope for the appearance of at least somewhat active separatist movement in Donetsk and Luhansk regions could be fulfilled only through the financing of the pro-Russian groups directly by the Kremlin and its administrative-political support. For this purpose, the so-called "'Dontesk Republic' Community Movement", fully controlled by Russian secret services and specializing in loud anti-Ukrainian provocations, similar to the fake declaration of the so-called "independence of Donetsk" in February 2009, was founded. It does not seem to be a coincidence that "Donetsk Republic" became the leading political force in the terroristic "DPR".The concept of the "Donetsk identity", according to which interests of Donetsk residents fully contradict with those of Galicia and Dnieper Ukraine, has become an ideological paradigm, aimed to legitimate Russian influence in the region, as well as to provide the criminal-oligarch leadership of the Party of Regions with the absolute power on the land of miners. The fundamental denial of the Ukrainian unity idea has become a key method for manipulating the consciousness of the local people.During 2005–2013, activists of the Ukrainian NGOs, political, cultural, and educational establishments, human rights advocates, members of the independent trade unions have made a great contribution to overcoming the influence of the Kremlin and its satellites in Donetsk region; however, their effort has not received respective support from Kyiv authorities.

This paper analyzes a notion of "European identity" that in academic discourse is represented by two models of conceptualization: essentialist vs discoursive - constructionist. A plea for "building up" of European identity by J. Habermas and J. Derrida is considered as a sample of contradictions in this construction approach due to its reifying, unifying and essentialist connotation. According to the outlined conceptualizations the phenomena of European identity is studied in the context of "cultural shift" in the EU integration policy. ; В статье рассматривается понятие "европейская идентичность", которое в научном дискурсе представляется двумя моделями концептуализации: эссенциалистской и конструктивистскодискурсивной. Обращение Ю. Хабермаса и Ж. Дерриды относительно необходимости "выстраивания" европейской идентичности рассматривается как пример противоречий в реализации конструктивистского подхода, который сохраняет элементы унификации, реификации и эссенциализма. В связи с обозначеными концептуализациями феномен европейской идентичности исследуется в контексте "культурного сдвига" в интеграционной политике ЕС. ; У статті розглядається поняття "європейська ідентичність", яке у науковому дискурсі має дві моделі концептуалізації: есенціалістську та конструктивістсько-дискурсивну. Звернення Ю. Габермаса та Ж.Дерріди щодо необхідності "вибудови" європейської ідентичності розглядається як приклад суперечностей конструктивістського підходу, що зберігає елементи уніфікації, реіфікації та есенціалізму. Відповідно до означених концептуалізацій феномен європейської ідентичності досліджується у контексті "культурного зрушення" в інтеграційній політиці ЄС.

AbstractThis paper develops understandings of how being publicly identified and consequently labelled as 'looked after' can have damaging consequences for young people, particularly in how they are perceived by their peers in the context of schooling. Based on qualitative research in northern England utilising participatory approaches with young people and interviews with support staff, we explore barriers that inhibit young people's sense of belonging. We highlight how the very processes and practices set up to support the young people can often have unintended consequences by routinely positioning them as Other, before considering the implications for education and schooling in particular.

(Tagline zu The Lego Batman Movie, 2017) DC Comics' dunkler Ritter zählt zu den bekanntesten und profitabelsten fiktionalen Charakteren weltweit. Ein Grund für Batmans langanhaltende Beliebtheit liegt in seiner archetypischen Konzeption, die über die Jahrzehnte eine immense Vielzahl an verschiedenen Interpretationen und Medienadaptionen ermöglichte. Für Jeffrey A. Brown stellen Batmans multiple Identitäten potenzielle Zugänge zu verschiedenen kulturellen wie gesellschaftlichen Diskursen dar: "What, for example, does the modern Batman reveal about current racial issues, sexual identities, and gender politics?" (S. 12). Seine Untersuchung von überwiegend comicbasierten Iterationen der Figur bündelt bestehende kulturwissenschaftliche Perspektiven auf den Fledermausmann und ergänzt sie durch gegenwärtige Comic-Beispiele seit den DC-Relaunchs 'The New 52' (2011-2016, DC Comics) und 'DC Rebirth' (2016-2017, DC Comics). Eine kenntnisreiche und inspirierende Studie, die mit zahlreichen Tropen und Konventionen der Figur wie auch des Superheldengenres aufräumt, in Anbetracht der überwältigenden Materialfülle jedoch oft nur an der Oberfläche der komplexen Thematik kratzt. Browns Arbeit folgt einer klaren Struktur: Nach einer kurzen Einleitung stellt der Autor im folgenden Kapitel 'Batman and Multiplicity' seinen grundlegenden Ansatz zur Vielseitigkeit der Figur vor. Grundlage bildet der von Henry Jenkins in seinem einflussreichen Aufsatz Just Men in Tights: Rewriting Silver Age Comics in an Era of Multiplicity (erschienen in The Contemporary Comic Book Superhero, hg. v Angela Ndalianis, New York/London 2009, S. 16-43) geprägte Begriff der multiplicity. Dieser beschreibt eine selbstreflexive Tendenz in modernen Superheldengeschichten, in der verschiedene Versionen desselben Franchises gleichzeitig rezipiert werden und ein intertextuelles Netzwerk bilden: "Meaning becomes layered on top of variations, and continuity is derived through a ready acceptance of multplicity." (S. 29) Wie auch andere Superheldencomics bewegt sich Batman in einem Spannungsfeld zweier Extreme: Auf der einen Seite steht die Kanonisierung von Erzählsträngen, Ereignissen und Charaktereigenschaften, die die vom Verlag streng überwachte, bindende Continuity des Superhelden und seiner Storyworld ausmacht und sie vor auftretenden Unstimmigkeiten bewahrt. Auf der anderen Seite steht die Diversifikation der Figur in alternativen Erzähluniversen, die entweder innerhalb des DC-Multiversums zu übergreifenden Crossover-Events konvergieren oder als einmalige 'Elseworlds'-Geschichten bekannte Superheldenerzählungen in fremde Zeit- und Genresettings transponieren. Diese Variationen werden zwar meist nicht dem Kanon zugerechnet, doch erweitern sie das übergeordnete Bild des Superhelden und ermöglichen neue Lesarten. So zählt Frank Millers The Dark Knight Returns (1986, DC Comics) zu einem der prägendsten Batman-Comics aller Zeiten, doch wird die in der Zukunft der Figur angesetzte Geschichte nicht als Teil der offiziellen Batman-Continuity angesehen. In einem Abriss der wesentlichen Inkarnationen innerhalb von Batmans mittlerweile 80-jähriger Mediengeschichte stellt Brown die verschiedenen transmedialen Passagen des Superhelden im Kontext ihrer produktions- und zeitgeschichtlichen Entstehung gegenüber – erweitert durch einen Ausblick auf durch Batman inspirierte Nachahmer, Doppelgänger und Parodien erster und zweiter Ordnung sowohl in DC Comics wie auch in anderen Comicverlagen. Dass diese gegensätzlichen Identitäten und Storyworlds dennoch alle als Batman erkannt werden, liegt für Brown an Batmans paradoxem Wesen, zugleich extrem flexibel wie auch fest umrissen zu sein. Der Argumentation von Roberta Pearson und William Uricchio in ihrer bahnbrechenden Arbeit The Many Lives of the Batman: Critical Approaches to a Superhero and His Media (New York 1991) folgend bilden bestimmte Schlüsselkomponenten für Brown den kleinsten gemeinsamen Nenner der Figurenkonzeption, zu denen Batmans Geheimidentität als Milliardär Bruce Wayne und der tragische Mord an seinen Eltern gehören, sein ikonografisches Fledermauskostüm, seine Ausrüstung und Fertigkeiten, die Stadt Gotham City sowie das wiederkehrende Figurenensemble aus Verbündeten und Feinden. Daraus setzt sich für Brown eine Art Proto-Batman zusammen ('Batman Prime'), der ausgehend von den Comics der 1980er Jahren Batman als düsteren, ernsten und erbarmungslosen Vigilanten einer dystopischen Ausnahmegesellschaft zeichnet. Alle anderen Versionen würden sich an dieser Schablone abarbeiten, indem sie das Bild des Batman Prime bestätigten, variierten, invertierten, karikierten oder ganz aufgäben. Dieses verlockende Konzept des Batman Prime als Basis-DNA der Figur stößt jedoch an seine Grenzen. Pearson und Uricchio selbst scheinen diesem Konzept zu widersprechen, wenn sie Batman als 'floating signifier' bezeichnen, der weder durch einen bestimmten Autor, noch durch eine spezifische Zeitepoche oder einen Primärtext definiert ist. Der 'dark and gritty'-Batman stellt zwar die gegenwärtig dominante Lesart der Figur dar, doch ist sie nicht die endgültige. In seiner Untersuchung Hunting Down the Dark Knight Knight: Twenty-First Century Batman (London/New York 2012) macht Will Brooker darauf aufmerksam, wie im Kampf um die Deutungshoheit des dunklen Ritters die multiplicity der Figur durch einen offiziellen Kanon heruntergespielt wird, der eine bevorzugte Lesart der Figur über andere Versionen favorisiert, die nicht den Interessen der Produzent*innen und den Vorlieben des Publikums entsprechen. Im Herzen dieser Hierarchie aus Batman-Texten stehe für Brooker die binäre Opposition zwischen dem dunklen und humorlosen Vigilanten und einem fröhlichen, spielerischen und bunten Batman, die sich in einem konstanten Dialog befänden. Zusätzlich zu den von Pearson und Uricchio aufgezählten Merkmalen definiert Brown seinen Batman Prime über implizite Merkmale: "The baseline Batman Prime is also 'pinned down' as a rich, white, heterosexual, American male in his 30s. It is these implicit characteristics of Batman (and most superheroes) that naturalize a persistent valorization of racial and gendered privilege" (S. 28). Diese Erkenntnis bildet die Grundlage für die weiteren Kapitel des Buches. Ausgehend von Pearsons und Uricchios Beobachtung, dass Batman als rechtschaffener Verbrechensbekämpfer und Bewahrer des gesellschaftlichen Status quo extratextuell die dominante hegemoniale Ordnung unterstütze, betrachtet Brown den dunklen Ritter als fiktionale Verkörperung des Konzeptes der hegemonialen Männlichkeit nach R. W. Connell und J. W. Messerschmidt ("Hegemonic Masculinity: Rethinking the Concept". In: Gender & Society 19/6, Dezember 2005, S. 829-859), die die Dynamik einer sozial übergestellten Position von Männern über Nicht-Männer beschreibt: "Batman is an idealized heroic figure who conforms to a very traditionally privileged social category. While Batman may be the toughest, smartest, and most determined alpha-male in a fictional world filled with super-men and wonder-women, in his civilian guise as Bruce Wayne, he is also conventionally portrayed as an able-bodied, white, heterosexual, male billionaire." (S. 80) Entsprechend setzt sich das dritte Kapitel 'Batman and Sexuality' mit den verschiedenen Variationen auseinander, in denen Batman sich mit sexueller Repräsentation auseinandersetzt. Von der queeren Lesart des dynamischen Duos aus Batman und Robin über die hypermaskulinen und hyperfemininen Darstellungen des Dunklen Ritters und seinen weiblichen love interests und femme fatales (insbesondere Catwoman) beleuchtet Brown an einer Reihe von Beispielen offene Anknüpfungspunkte für homo- und heterosexuelle Interpretationen. Das vierte Kapitel 'Batman and Sons' begegnet Batmans Rolle als sowohl symbolische wie auch tatsächliche Vaterfigur innerhalb seiner Bat-Family aus Sidekicks und (Ersatz-)Söhnen, denen er seine über alle Zweifel erhabene, hegemoniale Ideologie aus Gerechtigkeit und sozialer Verantwortung aufdrückt. Wie das Beispiel seines leiblichen Sohnes Damian Wayne zeigt, der heimlich von der Schurkin Talia al Ghul zum Assassinen ausgebildet wird, steht der väterlichen Ordnung in Superheldengeschichten sehr oft das Klischee der bösen Mutter gegenüber, die Unordnung und Gefahr birgt: "The subsequent struggles over Damian's allegiance with either Batman's paternalistic authority or Talia's maternal symbolic authority represent an ideological struggle […] with a clear preference for the Law of the Father" (S. 84). Das Kapitel 'The Batwomen' verfolgt die bewegte Geschichte der beiden Frauenfiguren Batgirl und Batwoman, die zwischen sexualisierten Stereotypen, Reflexionen progressiver Genderrollen und den Herausforderungen der männlichen Welt von Batman stehen. 'The Other Batmen' (Kapitel Sechs) betrachtet anschließend ethnische und postkolonialistische Fragestellungen innerhalb des Batman-Universums. Die Idee, dass Batman seine kämpferischen Fertigkeiten bei seinen Reisen durch den exotischen Osten erlernte, wird im Sinne des Orientalismus-Diskurses als kulturelle Appropriation identifiziert, während in aktuellen Storylines über Batmans weltweite Rekrutierung von ausländischen Verbrechensbekämpfer*innen in Grant Morrisons Batman Incorporated (2010-2013, DC Comics) unbewusste neokoloniale Untertöne ausgemacht werden: "The cumulative result of Batman's appropriation and colonization of Otherness is a strained attempt to incorporate diversity within the character's fictional world, and an unintended perpetuation of America's assumption of normative whiteness as the pinnacle of achievement" (S. 143). Dagegen werden mit den Batman-Protegés Batwing und The Signal afro-amerikanische Perspektiven in die Welt des Superhelden eingeführt. Kapitel Sieben setzt sich mit Batmans dunkler Seite auseinander und seinem manichäistischen Kampf gegen seine Doppelgänger-Schurken wie auch seinen Superheldenkollegen Superman, wobei in der binären Gegenüberstellung von Gut und Böse Batmans liminale Rolle als Held, Antiheld und Schatten noch stärker hätte ausgebaut werden können. Im letzten Kapitel 'I'm the Goshdarn Batman! ' steht die ungewöhnliche Darstellung des dunklen Ritters als kleine, niedliche Gestalt im Geiste der japanischen 'kawaiii'-Ästhetik etwa in Comicbuchreihen wie Lil' Gotham (2012, DC Comics) oder der Zeichentrickserie Teen Titans Go (seit 2013, Cartoon Network) im Vordergrund, die das Bild des düsteren, allmächtigen Vigilanten konterkariert. Abgerundet wird das Kapitel mit einer kurzen Betrachtung des The Lego Batman Movie, in der subversiv Batmans hegemoniale Männlichkeit sowie seine überdramatische Ernsthaftigkeit und Hypervirilität der Lächerlichkeit preisgegeben wird. Am Ende bleibt Browns Buch ein Fazit schuldig, das alle Gedankenstränge des Buches zusammenfasst und einen Ausblick in die Zukunft wagt. Batman and the Multiplicity of Identity macht den Eindruck einer Aufsatzsammlung, die sich zwar an manchen Stellen zu wiederholen droht, im Ganzen jedoch ein erfrischendes Kaleidoskop kulturwissenschaftlicher Analysen gegenwärtiger Batman-Comics bildet, das durch tiefe Materialkenntnis besticht und vor allem durch die Fokussierung oft vernachlässigter Nebencharaktere überzeugt.
