This book brings together ancient manuscripts of the large compendium of Mesopotamian exorcistic incantations known as Udug.hul (Utukku Lemnutu), directed against evil demons, ghosts, gods, and other demonic malefactors within the Mesopotamian view of the world. It allows for a more accurate appraisal of variants arising from a text tradition spread over more than two millennia and from many ancient libraries.
The use of incantation (ọfọ̀) is very popular in Yorùbá culture. It is considered to be an essential ingredient in the practice of Yorùbá traditional medicine as its use is believed to have magical powers that can be employed to solve human problems. Grammatically, Yorùbá incantations are transformationally derived sentences. This paper examines the grammatical transformations used in the derivation of Yoruba incantations. It sourced data from three selected Yorùbá incantation books - Àyájọ́ Ìjìnlẹ̀ Ohùn Ifẹ̀ (Fabunmi, 1972), Ìjìnlẹ̀ Ọfọ̀, Ògèdè àti Àásán (Rájí, 1991), and Ewì Àwíṣẹ Atóyèbí (2012) – and employs the Principles and Parameters approach Government- Binding theory to analyse them. Findings show that negation is the most prominent grammatical feature used in the derivation of Yorùbá incantations. The negation marker kì í has the most frequent occurrence while kọ́ rarely occurs in the incantations.

International audience ; This article provides an analysis of the knowledge base of organised crime assessments and policy making in the European Union. It is argued that the current European organised crime (threat) assessments are no reliable and relevant instruments to make meaningful statements about organised crime. The data collection system of the current assessments is defective and to a large extent dependant on what Member States decide to disclose and not based on clear developed concepts, definitions and methods. There is no discernable "counting unit" as a basis for deducing threats or risks. More fundamental: the definition or criteria list used is defective, providing no basis for further deductions or conclusions. The conclusions of the open versions of the European reports are of a very general nature, not substantially different from what can be found in open sources. Though European decision making claims to be founded on these assessments, it looks more like a ritual incantation than a knowledge based process.
