; [EN] At the beginning of the 20th century, Carducci served as a model for raising the register of literary Catalan, which until then had been strongly associated with the genres of myths, legends and popular songs. On some occasions, the metre and erudite rhetoric of the «barbarian » poet were adopted in polemics against the Decadent movement; on other occasions even from within it. A prevailing feature in the works of some authors was to emphasise oratory of a political nature, while in others, elitism of a classicist nature. Whatever the case, he enjoyed certain prestige among Modernists as well as the Majorcan School poets which reached its peak around 1907 (the year when he died), only to fall into decline during the following decades in the face of anti-hero and intimiste artistic tendencies. Nevertheless, there were continued sporadic resurges of «carduccianism» within these movements as a response to certain derivatives of the new artistic trends.

Although it is agreed that the study of national literatures is based on specific differences between them (works written in the same language and within the same tradition, and inevitably expressing a particular linguistic identity), we still can and must recognize the existence of an European literature as a homogeneous field of research characterized by functional unity. The term "European literature" is to be preferred to "Western literature": the former testifies to the historicity of works produced within this tradition, while the latter may assume undesirable political overtones.A literary tradition works across linguistic borders. Its modelling power can be recognized in a macro-text in which influences both dircet and indirect are at work. The European tradition has its source in the literature of classical antiquity, an inheritance handed down not only lo the Middle Ages, but also to the succeeding centuries, down to our times. Each new epoch contributes to the tradition, producing works which present themselves as models for the future while at the same time they continue the tradition. The study of European literature requires both a broad general approach and awareness of the specificity of individual works. The competence required is not ecumenical but multispecialistic and must avoid the pitfalls of two different approaches which have impoverished most studies in the field, the formalistic and the evaluative approaches. The former has overpriviledged the structural dimension of literary works. It should not however elude what may be considered the essence of a literary work of art, namely the whole gamut of human experienee and its embodiment in images, values, meanings. Literary tradition is not only made up of forms and codes, but also of a vast repository of themes which is constantly available and is drawn upon more or less explicitly and directly. On the other hand, the evaluative approach tends either to exalt the origins, thus denigrating modernity and neglecting the historicity of transmission, or to vindicate rupture with the past, as if this were not another form of tradition.Modern literature lives in an ambivalent relation to past and future and the former present as authority, the latter as project.

; [EN] This paper discusses two late-antique works which both greatly influenced the subsequent development of the Western art of war and illustrate the literary communication of scientific and technical knowledge in antiquity: Vegetius' Epitoma rei militaris and the anonymous De rebus bellicis. Despite various differences, these texts share two important traits: they are dedicated to an unnamed emperor and they appeal to utilitas as an informing principie, with particular reference to direct applicability in extralinguistic reality. These two features are directly linked and at the same time characteristic of this type of text: while

The study presented here intends to focus on the role played by the intellectual work of Carmen Martín Gaite in the path of women's selfconsciousness, just returned to democracy in Spain. Martín Gaite, through her activity as novelist, essayist and translator of a diverse mosaic of literary works, builds a synergistic discourse of intertextuality that, along with the constructive power of memory in the creation of reality, gives us an alternative way, 'other', right of women's writing. The writing becomes a place, an 'elsewhere', physical and symbolic at the same time, of female identity building, away from the traditional role imposed by men in the society and in the logos.

With the Principate legal literature gained in importance as consequence of the democratization of knowledge. An unlearned character in Petronius' Satyricon sought to buy aliquot libra rubricata (law-texts), in order to enable his son to acquire sufficient knowledge to embark upon a profitable profession (46.7).Membranae (parchments) was the title given by Neratius Priscus (cos. suff. 97) to one of his works.During the second and third centuries legal literature expanded in line with the need to provide a frame of reference. It is remarkable that in the same time, already in the earliest centuries, Christians were heavily involved in writing, copying, reading, exchanging, and disseminating a great number of texts as it is proven in the passage from the roll to the codex with the very construction of early Christian scriptural documents so as to render them more easily accessible to sub-elite readers. By the late second century, at least in some circles, Christian identity was connected with the possession of books, and various material evidence suggest that reading practices were developed and textual communities formed, in spite of what appears to have been the relatively low educational level of the majority of Christ believers. By the fourth century, a «media revolution» was in full swing.

The autobiographical writings of Della Walker, Sally Morgan, Nugi Garimara analyzed below contribute to forming and informing the concept of "aboriginal dissemi-nation" (Bhabha), that is a complex and multiform political, social and cultural entity, which narrates and which it is told from the margins where two hundred years of white domination have relegated it. ; This article aims to reflect is to reflect on the transnational di-mension of many contemporary authors in Italy and within the framework of the European context. Transnationalism assigns a pivotal role to the construction of a cross–border or hybrid imagination, on different cultural and commu-nicational levels, for example by encouraging the attention to those productions in the literary, cinematic, and artistic field which would be unthinkable if we relied on the tra-ditional concept of space where physical, cultural, political and social geography are perfectly matched. The paradigm of transnationalism also sheds light on the productions of contemporary literary authors who have multicultural and multilingual backgrounds, live and operate in a specific na-tional context or in different periods, move from one nation to another, or even follow intercontinental trajectories.
