A review article of 'The Sociology of Literary Creativity' (see SA 1330/D4429, D4431, D4433, D4434, D4435, D4436 & D4438). It is argued that since the role of the literary critic is first & foremost to enable people to get a better understanding of the books they read or the plays they see, sociol'al considerations of the circumstances in which the books came to be written are not always relevant to his aim. It is asserted that value judgments should be made by literary critics. These can in no way be influenced by the ideological considerations in the mind of the original writer. In discussing Lucien Goldmann's THE HIDDEN GOD attention is drawn to the narrowness of Goldmann's definition of tragedy, & it is argued that the approach in this book cannot really be applied to William Shakespeare. In conclusion, an attempt is made to show how a sociol'al approach can help the literary critic. The example of Donat O'Donnell's study of Graham Greene's THE HEART OF THE MATTER IN MARIA CROSS is cited. AA.

Before the rise of contemporary literary theory, literary study mainly concerned with the nature, role, function of literary works and general schema for literary criticism. The rise of contemporary literary theories, such as structuralism, poststructuralism, psychoanalysis, feminism, new historicism, postcolonialism, and so on have changed the nature of literary study. By applying concepts and paradigms taken from other spheres of intellectual activity, such as culture, linguistics, aesthetics, politics, history, psychology, economics, gender, and so on, current literary study starts questioning and criticizing literary study basic assumptions. Contemporary literary theory brings a broad array of fundamental issues to attention, such as the act of reading, interpretative strategy, epistemology of literary scholarships, nationalism, genre, gender, originality, intertextuality, social hegemony, authorial intention, truth, representation and so on.
