Giuseppina Martinuzzi (Labin, 1844. – Labin, 1925.), labinska pedagoginja, učiteljica, pjesnikinja, društvena i politička djelatnica, u oporuci napisanoj 1897. godine izrazila je želju da svoju ostavštinu, sastavljenu od mnoštva knjiga, novina, mapa, bilježnica i rukopisa objedinjenih u Knjižnicu Giovanni Antonia Martinuzzi, nakon smrti ostavi rodnom gradu Labinu. Nakon Giuseppinine je smrti 1925. godine njenoj želji udovoljeno te je Knjižnica ostala u Labinu, ali krajem Drugoga svjetskog rata, zbog neadekvatnih uvjeta čuvanja, dio je ostavštine premješten u današnju Sveučilišnu knjižnicu u Rijeci, a dio je ostao u Labinu. Godine 1961. labinski je dio pohranjen u Narodnom muzeju Labin i tu je ostao do današnjega dana. Na inicijativu Narodnoga muzeja Labin i Grada Labina te uz pristanak Sveučilišne knjižnice u Rijeci 2018. godine Ministarstvu kulture RH upućen je zahtjev za povratom riječkoga dijela Giuseppinine ostavštine u Labin, čemu je udovoljeno u srpnju 2019. godine. Građa iz Sveučilišne knjižnice u Rijeci, sastavljena od mapa različitih sadržaja, prenesena je u Narodni muzej Labin u studenom 2019. godine te je time Knjižnica Giovanni Antonia Martinuzzi ponovno dobila svoj izvorni oblik i postala cjelina kakvom ju je formirala Giuseppina Martinuzzi. ; Giuseppina Martinuzzi (Labin, 1844 – Labin, 1925), Labin-born pedagogue, schoolteacher, poet, social and political worker, expressed in her will in 1897 a desire to leave her material legacy, composed of a large number of books, newspapers, maps, notebooks and manuscripts all forming the Giovanni Antonia Martinuzzi Library, to her hometown of Labin. After Giuseppina's death in 1925, her wish was granted and the library remained in Labin, but at the end of World War II, due to inadequate storage conditions, part of the library was moved to today's University Library in Rijeka, while the other part remained in Labin. In 1961, the Labin holdings were moved to the Labin National Museum and have remained there to this day. At the initiative of the National Museum of Labin and the City of Labin and with the consent of the University Library in Rijeka, a request was sent to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia in 2018 to return the Rijeka portion of Giuseppina's library to Labin, which was granted in July 2019. The material from the University Library in Rijeka, composed of folders holding various contents, was transferred to the National Museum of Labin in November 2019, so that the Giovanni Antonia Martinuzzi Library regained its original form and became a whole as originally envisioned by Giuseppina Martinuzzi. ; Giuseppina Martinuzzi (Albona, 1844 – Albona, 1925.), pedagoga, maestra, poetessa, operatrice sociale e politica, con volontà testamentaria del 1897 espresse il desiderio che dopo la sua morte il suo lascito, composto da molti libri, giornali, mappe, quaderni e manoscritti raccolti nella Biblioteca Giovanni Antonia Martinuzzi, venisse consegnato alla sua città natia. In effetti dopo la morte di Giuseppina, avvenuta nel 1925, il suo desiderio fu esaudito e la sua Biblioteca fu collocata ad Albona. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, a causa delle inadeguate condizioni di conservazione, una parte del suo lascito fu trasferita nell'odierna Biblioteca universitaria di Fiume, mentre l'altra rimase ad Albona. Nel 1961 la parte rimasta ad Albona fu consegnata al Museo popolare di Albona, dove tuttora si trova. Su iniziativa del menzionato Museo nonché della Città di Albona e con il benestare della Biblioteca universitaria di Fiume nel 2018 fu inoltrata al Ministero alla cultura della Repubblica di Croazia la richiesta di restituzione ad Albona della parte fiumana del lascito di Giuseppina, e questa fu accolta nel luglio 2019. La documentazione custodita presso la Biblioteca universitaria di Fiume, composta da mappe di contenuti diversi, fu trasportata al Museo popolare di Albona nel novembre 2019 e in tal modo la Biblioteca Giovanni Antonia Martinuzzi acquistò nuovamente la sua forma originaria e ridiventò quell'insieme che Giuseppina Martinuzzi aveva creato.

Dottorato di ricerca in Memoria e materia dell'opera d'arte attraverso i processi di produzione , storicizzazione, conservazione, musealizzazione ; Il progetto I codici e la cultura scientifica alla corte dei Papi tra fine XIII e primi decenni del XV secolo, con particolare attenzione ai manoscritti miniati della Biblioteca Papale di Avignone si articola in tre snodi principali, corrispondenti alle partizioni essenziali in cui è stato suddiviso il lavoro. Innanzitutto si è tratteggiata una panoramica della storia, delle caratteristiche e degli sviluppi degli inventari delle librariae pontificie tra 1295 e 1594, fonti e testimonianze essenziali da cui partire, per indagare la vastità degli interessi culturali, in particolare scientifici, della corte papale. Tale esame, oltre a permettere di delineare l'effettiva presenza e consistenza di codici scientifici alla corte dei pontefici tra XIII e XV secolo e di rintracciare e riconoscere un nucleo significativo di manoscritti, oggi conservati in diversi fondi di biblioteche europee (Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Biblioteca Alessandrina, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, British Library, Biblioteca capitular di Toledo), a seguito della parziale dispersione e frammentazione della biblioteca papale, ha permesso di sottolineare, seguendo la prospettiva di lunga durata, le palesi divergenze esistenti in tale campo del sapere con il canone quattrocentesco redatto da Tommaso Parentucelli per la costituzione di una teorica biblioteca umanistica. Per sostanziare tale confronto si è fatto riferimento alla presenza degli item di natura scientifica elencati nei diversi inventari, inseriti in appendice. Quindi si è proposta una disamina della fortuna del pensiero scientifico all'interno della corte pontificia tra seconda metà del XIII e XIV secolo, prendendo in esame lo Studium di Viterbo, maggiore centro culturale del tempo in tale campo, e il pontificato di Bonifacio VIII (1297-1304), per giungere ai due casi peculiari, durante il papato avignonese, di Giovanni XXII (1316-1334) e Clemente VI (1342-1352), scelti non solo per la personale tensione verso le scienze esatte, ma anche per i riflessi risultanti nella loro azione politica: significativa in tal senso la bolla Super illius specula, promulgata nel 1326 da Giovanni XXII, e altrettanto rilevante l'intenso dibattito inerente la Visione beatifica sviluppatosi sotto il medesimo pontefice oppure alla questione sulla determinazione della data della Pasqua. Infine si è affrontato il nucleo dei codici scientifici miniati della biblioteca papale di Avignone. Da tale lavoro, basato principalmente sull'istituzione, ove possibile, di confronti con la coeva produzione liturgico-giuridica propria della curia pontificia, sulla quale fino a oggi si sono concentrati gli studi inerenti la miniatura avignonese, è emerso che tale gruppo di manoscritti è costituito in prevalenza da codici di studio, appartenuti probabilmente a membri della curia, entrati solo successivamente a far parte della collezione libraria papale, in virtù dello ius spolii, come recentemente dimostrato per il Borgh. 353 (Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana). Solo alcuni manoscritti potrebbero ritenersi il frutto di una specifica commissione pontificia, come evidente dalle dediche presenti sia nel ms 81 della Biblioteca Alessandrina di Roma, contenente il Commento alla Physioniomia di Guglielmo di Myrica, sia nel ms lat. 7293 della Bibliothèque Nationale de France, copia acefala del De instrumento rivelatore di Levì Ben Gerson. Il carattere privato di tali manoscritti appare ancor più evidente qualora si passi all'analisi degli apparati decorativi, dove si constata in alcuni casi la totale o parziale assenza di pagine d'incipit riccamente miniate, di iniziali rubricate o filigranate quand'anche previste dall'ordinator. Accanto a considerazioni prettamente stilistiche si sono anche condotte riflessioni inerenti l'iconografia delle iniziali istoriate dal momento che spesso risultano essere caratterizzate da raffigurazioni del tutto estranee alla materia trattata all'interno delle opere di cui qualificano l'incipit. La presenza di soggetti quali ad esempio la Vergine in maestà, del Cristo in trono o della Sacra famiglia consueti in testi di contenuto religioso, si è legata alla volontà di rendere più appetibile a un pubblico non laico la materia profana trattata. Accanto a tale tesi, probabilmente risultato dell'esclusiva volontà del committente, non si può non proporre anche una lectio facilior di tale discrepanza tra testo ed immagine, che potrebbe forse trovare la sua ragion d'essere forse nel fatto che gli artisti, abituati a realizzare per la curia testi di carattere sacro, abbiano usato i medesimi modelli a loro disposizione anche nella decorazione di codici di natura del tutto profana, ricorrendo ad un repertorio di soggetti standardizzato, senza preoccuparsi di aggiornarlo a esigenze diverse e in particolare a quelle legate ai contenuti di opere quali la Physica o la Methapysica. Tale parte del lavoro è stata arricchita e supportata da schede catalografiche, composte da un'attenta analisi e descrizione codicologica, alla quale fa seguito una sezione storico-critica incentrata sulle vicende sia compositive sia collezionistiche di detti codici e sul loro attuale stato conservativo. ; The project Codes and Scientific Culture at the Court of the Popes in Late Thirteenth Century and in the Early Decades of the Fifteenth Century, with Particular Attention to the Illuminated Manuscripts of the Papal Library of Avignon is divided into three main parts, corresponding to the essential partitions in which is partitioned the researching work. The first one is dedicated to an overview of the history, the characteristics and the developments of papal libraries inventories between 1295 and 1594. Its matter of fact that these ones are essential sources and testimonies for investigate the cultural interests, particularly the scientific one in the papal court. This examination, as well as allowing you to outline the actual presence and consistency of scientific codes in the court of the popes between the thirteenth and fifteenth century, tracking and recognizing a significant core of manuscripts, now preserved in various collections of European libraries (Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, British Library, Toledo Capitular Library), following the partial dispersion and fragmentation of the papal library, allowed to point out, following the long-term perspective, the obvious differences that exist in this field of knowledge with the canon century written by Thomas Parentucelli for the establishment of a theoretical humanistic library. This point has been substantiated by comparison of the items listed in the various scientific inventories, included in the book's appendix. The second part of the volume concerned an examination of the fortune of scientific thought in the papal court in the second half of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, examining the Studium of Viterbo: the greater the cultural center of the time in this field; the pontificate of Boniface VIII (1297 -1304); and finally outlining two peculiar cases, during the Avignon papacy of John XXII (1316-1334) and Clement VI (1342-1352), chosen not only for the personal tension towards the exact sciences, but also for the reflections resulting in their political action: significant in this sense, the Super illius note, promulgated in 1326 by Pope John XXII, the intense debate regarding the Beatific Vision developed under the same pope or the question of determining the date of Easter. In the last section, we addressed the core of the scientific codes illuminated the papal library in Avignon. This work has based mainly on the establishment, where possible, comparisons with contemporary liturgical and legal production linked to the papal curia, on which up now it has focused studies. It was found that this group of manuscripts is mainly consisting of study codes, probably belonged to members of the Curia, which came only later to be part of the papal library collection, by virtue of jus spolii, as recently demonstrated, for example in the case of Borgh. 353 (Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana). Only few manuscripts may be considered the result of a specific pontifical commission, as evident from the dedications both the ms 81 of the Alessandrina Library of Rome, containing a commentary on the Physioniomia of William of Myrica, or the ms lat. 7293 of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, a Levi ben Gerson headless copy of the De instrumento rivelatore. The private nature of the manuscripts is even more evident when you analyze the decorative device. It is found in some cases the total or partial absence of pages of richly illuminated incipit, in other ones the absence of rubricated or pen worked initials even provided by ordinator. In addition to stylistic considerations it has also conducted reflections about historiated initials. They often turn out to be characterized by depictions completely unrelated to the topic within the works which qualify the opening words. The presence of subjects such as the Virgin in majesty, the enthroned Christ or the Holy Family usually present in texts of religious content, it is linked to the desire to make it more agreeable to a secular audience the profane matter treated in the books, so probably the exclusive will result of the client. However we can also propose a lectio facilior of this discrepancy between text and image. It could possible find its reason in the fact that artists, accustomed to achieve sacred texts for curia, they used the same models in the decoration of codes of secular nature, using a standardized repertoire of subjects, not bothering to upgrade it to the different needs of 3 operas like Physica and Metaphysica. This last section has been enriched and supported by catalog entries, consisting of careful analysis and description codex, which is followed by a historical-critical section focused on the compositional

ITALIANO: L'articolo propone una prima riflessione sui modi di leggere i testi storiografici nell'Italia meridionale tardomedievale a partire dalle glosse presenti nel ms. BAV, Vat. lat. 5001. Il codice, databile agli inizi del XIV secolo, contiene una miscellanea di cronache, documenti e testi di altro genere prodotti nel Mezzogiorno longobardo tra l'VIII e il X secolo. Questi testi, e soprattutto le cronache di Erchemperto e dell'Anonimo Salernitano, già nel XIV secolo sono state oggetto di numerose annotazioni ad opera di almeno cinque lettori diversi. L'articolo comprende tre sezioni. Dopo una breve premessa nella prima sezione si presentano alcune considerazioni sul codice stesso, sulla sua storia e sulle copie, dirette e non, effettuate dagli eruditi campani tra il XVI e il XVIII secolo. Alcune di queste copie hanno anche glosse medievali e consentono di recuperare parti delle glosse stesse che sono andate perse a causa di successive rifilature dell'antigrafo trecentesco. Nella seconda sezione del contributo si discutono alcune glosse della mano D, la più assidua tra i glossatori, caratterizzata da uno spiccato interesse per Salerno. In particolare si presenta una selezione di glosse, a partire da quelle che servivano da guida alla consultazione (riassunti, rimandi interni), passando per annotazioni relative alla topografia della città, al territorio del principato e all'ordine politico della regione (spesso indicative di tensione tra continuità e mutamento), fino a considerare i commenti che da singoli eventi traevano insegnamenti politici o morali. Nella breve sezione finale si mette in luce come lo studio proposto apra la strada a due linee di ricerca: la prima tesa a considerare anche le glosse sparse nei codici come testimoni del fenomeno (ancora poco studiato) dei commenti a testi di storia nel Medioevo; la seconda invece volta al recupero e all'analisi di ogni singolo manoscritto di contenuto storiografico come fonte della cultura storica del Mezzogiorno medievale. / ENGLISH: Taking MS. BAV, Vat. lat. 5001 as a case study, the article provides preliminary considerations on the ways that historical writings were read in Southern Italy during the Late Middle Ages. The early-fouteenth-century manuscript contains a miscellany of chronicles, charters and texts of other types, all of which were produced in the South between the 8th and the 10th centuries. This miscellany, in particular the chronicles by Erchempertus and that by the Anonymous Salernitanus, were heavily glossed in the 14th century by at least five different readers. The article consists of a short foreword and three chapters. The first part deals with the manuscript itself, with its history and with the manuscript copies of it produced by early-modern Italian scholars. Some of these copies also contain the medieval glosses. They therefore made it possible to recover parts of the glosses that have been lost through the trimming of margins in the Vatican codex. The second section discusses selected glosses by hand D, who was the most assiduous of all the readers and who reveals a particular interest in the city of Salerno. First I examine the glosses that served as a guide to contents (summaries, cross-references), then I consider the glosses concerned with topography of the city, the territory and political order of the region (here the tension between continuity and change is often visible), I round off by discussing the annotations that extract political and moral teaching from accounts of single events. Finally (section three) it is argued that the present case study leads to two conclusions: firstly, that glosses scattered in the margins of historical manuscripts are witnesses of the phenomenon of commenting on historical works in the Middle Ages (a fact that continues to be underestimated by the modern scholarship); secondly, that in studies on historical culture of medieval Southern Italy more room should be given to the analysis of individual historical manuscripts and their uses.

This paper offers a sketch of the life and work of the bolognese circle of professors of law called, insome legal manuscripts of the end of thirteenth century, the "moderni": it was the generationactive in Bologna between about 1270 and 1305, the years of the establishment and triumph of thenew government of the city by the popular party. It was not simply a matter of chronology. Thenew generation of doctores, like Lambertinus Ramponi, Pax de Pace, Basacomater de Basacomatre, Thomas Guidonis Ubaldini, Gardinus de Gardinis, was really different from theprevious ones, in their way of thinking and teaching and also in their way of establishing legaltheory. Emancipated around 1268, they began to take part in judicial affairs in 1269-70. Then they taught at the university: they wrote short treatises about legal procedure, and above all they wrotea lot of questiones, the most common learning method in law school in the second half of the 13th century. After the revolution of 1274 and the ban of the Ghibelline party, they were constantly present in the committees of sapientes, charged with reviewing the law, finding the solution for theemergencies in the public affairs and receiving the appeals from defendants implicated in political trials. I will suggest here three perspectives focused on the indissoluble link between juridical culture andpolitical power in thirteenth century Bologna professors. First, a brief sketch about the main stagesof a jurist's career; second, the role of academic culture, especially the questiones method, inshaping the political consciousness of the jurists; and finally, the consequences of their directcontrol over the issues of political justice during the last twenty years of the century.

Considerato che in epoca fascista è possibile rintracciare una pletora di elementi orientalistici di gusto differente e di valore assai vario e che fra questi è possibile selezionare alcuni vettori di ricerca e di rappresentazione delle culture orientali, che hanno permesso comunque il costituirsi di approcci scientifici e istituzionali rigorosi, sarà forse bene parlare per quel periodo di «Orientalismi» al plurale. Tale prospettiva rinvia per contesto alle plurime rappresentazioni dell'«Oriente» nella cultura italiana della prima metà del Novecento. Un'autentica "età dei padri" dell'orientalistica nazionale incarnata nell'opera di studiosi come Leone Caetani, Francesco Gabrieli, Carlo Formichi, Giuseppe Tucci; dall'altro, insieme, di suggestive appropriazioni filosofiche e di declinazioni geoculturali degli spazi orientali che aprono su un versante ancora poco esplorato, rispetto al quale si possono immaginare almeno tre direzioni principali di indagine: lo sviluppo scientifico e istituzionale degli studi orientalistici nella cultura accademica italiana; la ricezione e la ritrascrizione di elementi linguistici e di pensiero orientali nella cultura filosofica nazionale; infine, le articolazioni ideologiche degli spazi orientali nella storiografia politica. In particolare, alcuni nodi ci sembrano fondamentali: anzitutto la vicenda della fondazione dell'IsMEO, luogo istituzionale e politico di una koiné culturale che seppe riservarsi ampi margini di autonomia nella produzione e nell'organizzazione di un sapere certamente pionieristico negli studi orientali, la sua storia politico-istituzionale, il senso e la portata dei suoi progetti editoriali, compreso il supporto alle missioni scientifiche e alla costituzione di uno straordinario patrimonio di reperti archeologici, di fondi manoscritti, di fonti iconografiche. In secondo luogo, i ruoli rivestiti da diversi orientalisti nelle relazioni diplomatiche e nella politica estera del fascismo, delle funzioni diplomatiche svolte, anche attraverso vie carsiche, dagli orientalisti italiani all'interno della «politica orientale » fascista. Sullo sfondo, la figura centrale e attivissima, sul piano organizzativo come su quello scientifico, di Giuseppe Tucci.As far as Fascist age is concerned it is probably correct to refer to "Orientalisms", according to multiple representations of "East" in Italian culture in the first half of the twentieth century. In fact, it is possible to find out a great amount of Oriental elements of different tastes and various value in that period and among them it is possible to select some research vectors and modes of representation of Oriental cultures that allowed the establishment of scientific approaches and of rigorous institutional studies perspective. It was a true "age of the fathers" of national Orientalism, scholars such as Leone Caetani, Francesco Gabrieli, Carlo Formichi, Giuseppe Tucci. Moreover, it is possible to find out suggestive ideological perspectives and philosophical facets of geo-cultural spaces that open the eastern studies to an unexplored side, against which we can imagine at least three main directions of investigation: the scientific and institutional culture of academic Oriental studies in Italian, receiving and re-registration of linguistic elements of thought and philosophical culture in the Eastern National, and finally, joints ideological spaces in East political historiography. In particular, some points seem fundamental. First of all the story of the founding Is- MEO, which meant institutional and political rise of a cultural koiné that was able to reserve a large margin of autonomy in production and organization of knowledge and pioneering studies of the East. IsMEO's political-institutional history meant publishing projects, including support to scientific missions and the establishment of an extraordinary wealth of archaeological finds of manuscripts, of iconographic sources. The other important point is the roles played by the various Orientalists in diplomatic relations and in the foreign policy of fascism. They carried out diplomatic functions, including subterranean political paths directing to Eastern policy. In the background one can observe the central and leading personality of Giuseppe Tucci, who was very active in organizing and planning scientific studies.

[POST-PRINT, Author's Accepted Manuscript] ABSTRACT «With Everlasting Voice they Advise Brotherhood to the Whole World»: the 'Martyrs of Kindu' and the Cult of Fallen Soldiers for Peace This essay focuses on the issue of martyrdom from a particular point of view, that is the cult of Italian aviators killed in Kindu in 1961. The Catholic world offered an original contribution to the construction of the public narrative of the Congolese massacre and the celebration of its victims. The starting point is the sermon given by Ugo Camozzo, archbishop of Pisa (seat of the brigade to which the military belonged), who spoke of the dead as the actors in a «mission of human and Christian civilization». The analysis sets that sentence into its broader context; in addition to questioning the persistence of national-Catholic frames, it dwells on the contents of the funeral liturgies and the comments appeared in the press, in order to highlight the intertwining of the elements of continuity and the factors of change which shook a church experiencing the Johannine turning point: anti-Communism, the rethinking of the "religious war culture", the racist and colonial legacy, the emergence of a "new universalism" aimed at claiming on a global scale a profane, and no more hierocratic, Christendom.

In rapporto all'antico regime genovese, il tema della censura libraria, anzi il «ruolo dell'autorità civile nel controllo della produzione e della circolazione degli scritti» (M. Infelise) non è mai stato sistematicamente affrontato, e il dato è notevole alla luce del peso politico, non solo economico, di questa repubblica, nel quadro dell'Europa moderna. La storia della cultura ligure non vanta i primati di quella veneziana – basti il raffronto tra i rispettivi apparati censori e mercati librari – ma l'ingombrante topos della Genova «incolta, abitata da uomini troppo impegnati a far quattrini» (G. Assereto) appartiene ormai al passato. Un patriziato sufficientemente colto, aggiornato e intellettualmente vivace, ma non così libero di scrivere: la massima parte della sua produzione politica e storiografica è rimasta confinata nel perimetro dell'oligarchia ed è ancora manoscritta. Anche un altro piano della questione, quello che specificamente concerne il controllo della produzione e della circolazione a stampa, denota interessanti peculiarità. Il completo riordino di questa materia cominciò solo nel 1628, in seguito alla congiura di Vachero, uno dei più gravi episodi di lesa maestà dell'antico regime genovese, connotato da una nutrita produzione libellistica, per la prima volta diffusa anche a stampa e oltre i confini del Genovesato. Inoltre un riordino che si articolò in almeno cinque provvedimenti: l'istituzione degli Inquisitori di Stato (1628), sul modello veneziano; il decreto del 1634 sulle scritture politiche e sulle historiae; la fine del monopolio sulla stampa (1635); l'istituzione della Giunta di Giurisdizione (o Giunta Ecclesiastica, 1638); i nuovi Ordini per occasione delle stampe (1648). ; The regulation of writing and printing (or, as M. Infelise writes, the 'role of civil authority in controlling the production and circulation of writings') in Genoa in the modern age still needs to be studied systematically, which is remarkable in the light of the political and economic standing of the Republic in modern Europe. While the Republic could never boast the cultural eminence of Venice (a self-evident fact, when the respective censorship systems and book markets are compared) the commonplace that Genoa was simply 'uncultivated, inhabited by men too busy making money' (G. Assereto) merely represents an old prejudice. The Genoese aristocracy was, in fact, adequately cultivated, intellectually active and up to date, but not so free to write. Most of its production on political and historical subjects, indeed, only circulated among the oligarchy and in manuscript form. How are we to account for this fact? How did the regulations on written production contribute to this outcome? Just as unclear is the system of regulations presiding over the production and circulation of print specifically. A comprehensive re-organisation of the legislation was only begun in 1628, following the conspiracy headed by Vachero. This treason at- tempt, one of the gravest in the time of the old Genoese regime, was attended by a vast production of pamphlets, which for the first time circulated in print and also reached beyond the domains of the Republic. The new legislation plan involved five chief measures: 1. the institution of State Inquisitors (1628), based on the Venetian model. 2. The 1634 decree on political writings and historical chronicles. 3. The end of the monopoly on print (1635). 4. The institution of the Giunta di Giurisdizione (also known as the Ecclesiastical Council, 1638). 5. The issuing of the Ordini per occasione delle stampe (Norms on the production of print – 1648).

Nell'articolo si narra la vicenda relativa al rientro dei manoscritti ashburnhamiani in Italia, tutta ricompresa nella Relazione alla Camera dei Deputati, che servì al giovane Parlamento italiano per mettere a disposizione un'ingente somma di danaro per riportare nel luogo da cui, attraverso varie vicende, quella importante raccolta era stata allontanata.Alla morte del lord, avvenuta nel giugno del 1878, la biblioteca passò, unitamente alle altre proprietà, al figlio maggiore, il nuovo Lord Ashburnham, il quale mise in vendita la biblioteca. Essa fu ceduta in tre blocchi: la collezione "Libri" e l'"Appendice" furono comprate dal governo italiano che poteva contare sulla cifra di 585.000 lire d'oro. Per l'Italia le operazioni d'acquisto furono fatte, per incarico del governo, da Pasquale Villari che volle accanto a sé numerosi uomini di cultura, in particolare il Carducci, il quale ritenne l'occasione che si presentava importantissima per la ricostruzione della storia letteraria italiana antica. Il 4 dicembre del 1884 il fondo venne depositato presso la Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana.Tra coloro che ebbero modo di consultare la raccolta londinese prima che fosse smembrata v'è Salomone Morpurgo, che fu colpito dall'enorme quantità di codici (per la maggior parte italiani) posseduti da Lord Ashburnham, molti dei quali autografi e ricercati da tanti intellettuali in Italia.Di fronte all'immensità della collezione, lo studioso si rese immediatamente conto del valore culturale di quei testi e, venuto a conoscenza del desiderio dell'Ashburnham di vendere l'intera biblioteca, cercò attraverso una serie di lettere di muovere intellettuali e studiosi per forzare il giovane Parlamento italiano a mettere a disposizione la cifra necessaria per raggiungere un tale risultato:Egli aveva percepito immediatamente che l'acquisto dei preziosi manoscritti avrebbe costituito un'occasione unica per la corretta rielaborazione dell'intera storia letteraria italiana. Le lettere dirette a Salomone Morpurgo sono per la gran parte andate disperse; quelle da lui scritte, anche a causa delle leggi razziali, hanno subito la medesima sorte, tranne pochi nuclei presenti in archivi pubblici o privati, non ordinati, per i quali non è stata possibile da parte degli organi governativi fascisti procedere all'eliminazione. Così, corpose raccolte sono presenti nel fondo Monaci di Roma, nell'Archivio di Casa Carducci, nel fondo D'Ancona e in quello Barbi di Pisa. Nell'appendice a fondo articolo si presentano alcune lettere inedite a Ernesto Monaci e a Giosuè Carducci. ; The article tells about the return to Italy of the Ashburnham manuscripts, all included in the Report to the Chamber of Deputies, that was needed by the young Italian Parliament to provide a large sum of money to bring back that important collection to the place from which it had been subtracted through various events.On the death of the Lord, in June 1878, the library, together with other property, passed to the eldest son, the new Lord Ashburnham, who put the library up for sale. It was sold in three blocks: the"Books" and"Appendixes" collection was bought by the Italian government which was able to count on the sum of 585,000 golden lire. For Italy the purchases were made, on behalf of the government, by Pasquale Villari who wished to be accompanied by numerous men of culture, especially Carducci, who considered the occasion of the greatest importance for the reconstruction of ancient Italian literary history. On 4th December 1884 the collection was brought to the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana (Laurentian Medicean Library).Among those who were able to consult the London collection before it was dismembered was Salomone Morpurgo. He was struck by the incredible number of manuscripts (most of which Italian) in Lord Ashburnham's possession. Many of these were autographed and sought after by scholars in Italy. When faced with the vastness of the collection, the scholar understood immediately the cultural value of those texts and, when he discovered that Ashburnham wished to sell the entire library, through a series of letters he tried to move intellectuals and scholars to convince the young Italian Parliament to provide the money necessary to achieve this result. He had grasped immediately that the purchase of the precious manuscripts would have formed a unique occasion for the correct processing of all Italian literary history. Most of the letters addressed to Salomone Morpurgo have been lost; those written by him, due also to the racial laws, suffered the same destiny, except for some small nuclei in public and private archives, that had not been put in order and as a result the Fascist government bodies were unable to eliminate them. There are therefore some good collections in the Monaci Collection in Rome, in the Archive of Casa Carducci in Bologna, in the Ancona collection and in the Barbi collection of Pisa. In the appendix at the end of the article there are some unpublished letters to Ernesto Monaci and to Giosuè Carducci.

Dottorato di ricerca in Storia e cultura del viaggio e dell'odeporica in età moderna ; Lo studio che presento nella mia tesi di dottorato riguarda il viaggio che tre religiosi toscani, il frate camaldolese Silvestro Bernardini, l'ex-pievano Jacopo Bartolini e il canonico Gaetano Talej compiono a Roma nell'anno 1829, lasciandone testimonianza in un diario di viaggio che si conserva presso l'Archivio Storico del Monastero di Camaldoli. Il manoscritto, segnato Ms 134, consta di centoquarantadue fogli numerati progressivamente dall'estensore che dichiara di copiare dall'originale senza rivelare la propria identità. I protagonisti sono umili esponenti del basso clero e non dispongono perciò di laute risorse economiche. Viaggiare in società consente, quindi, di ammortizzare i costi ma non solo. Il gruppo è considerato un'entità indivisibile ed il viaggio è dominato dall'esigenza di condividere l'esperienza che si sta per intraprendere. E', infatti, una gita, un viaggio di piacere, che rappresenta una rottura nelle rispettive vite di questi religiosi, in quanto li proietta fuori i confini dell'universo monastico e li pone a contatto con un mondo altro e variegato che supera gli angusti orizzonti del proprio retroterra culturale. Ho cercato di evidenziare come questa gita di piacere consenta di sviluppare, in particolare in Silvestro Bernardini, una dimensione laica del viaggio effettivamente compiuto. Determinante il rapporto che si instaura con la guida di Mariano Vasi, l'Itinerario istruttivo in otto stazioni o giornate per ritrovare con facilità tutte le antiche e moderne magnificenze di Roma, che l'estensore richiama più volte nel corso del soggiorno romano e alla quale frequentemente rinvia il lettore per approfondire la descrizione dei monumenti più ragguardevoli della città eterna. Il suo uso conferma la volontà di una visita articolata in tappe seguendo un itinerario prestabilito, anche se l'estensore non mancherà di esternare l'insofferenza di Bernardini e Talej verso un modello di visita che Jacopo Bartolini, economo della società, vorrebbe rigidamente imprigionato nel modello delle otto giornate. La tesi è costituita da cinque capitoli. Il primo è dedicato alla presentazione di due tipologie di viaggiatori, nobili e religiosi, che si spostano dentro e fuori i confini dello Stato Pontificio nell'età moderna. L'argomento è illustrato anche attraverso documenti inediti conservati in alcuni importanti archivi di famiglia. Ho ritenuto importante che l'analisi di questo manoscritto fosse contestualizzata nel periodo storico di riferimento del viaggio compiuto: pertanto, nel secondo capitolo, ho elaborato una mappatura di viaggiatori italiani che nei primi anni del secolo XIX visitano, per motivi diversi, la città eterna, cercando di evidenziare i connotati peculiari del viaggio effettuato. Geografie diverse di viaggi e viaggiatori testimoniano un processo di democratizzazione che investe la cultura del viaggio conferendo a quest'ultimo un carattere "popolare". Il viaggio ha contribuito, quindi, ad avvicinare territori di uno stato non ancora unificato consentendo la scoperta di elementi comuni che legano l'Italia da un capo all'altro. Il terzo capitolo rappresenta un'interpretazione personale del manoscritto camaldolese dal punto di vista della letteratura di viaggio ed evidenzia l'instaurarsi di una logica di opposizione tra Bernardini e Bartolini che, da viaggiatori, divengono "personaggi". Il quarto, invece, ripercorre l'itinerario del viaggio di andata e di ritorno dei tre religiosi toscani, inserito nel contesto storico di riferimento. Ho delineato perciò le condizioni della rete viaria dello Stato Pontificio nella prima metà dell'Ottocento, un'epoca di Risorgimento e Restaurazione, segnata da importanti trasformazioni; ho evidenziato, inoltre, come il Risorgimento sia estraneo alla cultura dei nostri religiosi condizionandone, però, gli elementi dell'osservazione e dispiegando effetti sul viaggio stesso. Il quinto capitolo è una mappatura delle scritture di viaggio conservate negli istituti culturali frequentati ai fini della ricerca. In appendice ho riportato, invece, la trascrizione del manoscritto. ; The topic of my thesis is the journey made to Rome in 1829 by three Tuscan churchmen: the Camaldolese Silvestro Bernardini, the ex-parish priest Jacopo Bartolini, the treasurer of the group, and the canon Gaetano Talej. They wrote a diary of this journey which is preserved in the Historical Archive of the Monastery of Camaldoli. The manuscript, marked Ms 134, is made of 142 sheets of paper numbered in progressive order by the redactor, who never reveals his identity and states that e has just copied down the original text. The protagonists are humble members of the lower clergy and cannot rely on large financial resources, therefore travelling together allow them to amortize the expenses, moreover the journey itself is conceived as an experience to share. As a matter of fact it a journey for pleasure, which takes the three men away from their world and put them in contact with a more various and open-minded reality. I have tried to show how this experience developed, especially in Silvestro Bernardini, a lay value of the journey actually made. The relationship with the guide written by Mariano Vasi is crucial. The reference to this text confirms that the journey was thought as a series of steps following a planned route, even though the writer stresses on Bernardini's and Talej's dissatisfaction with Bartolini's proposal not to travel more than eight days. My thesis consists of 5 chapters. The first introduces two types of travellers, the noblemen and the churchmen, who move within and outside the Papal State in the modern age. The topic is also supported by unpublished documents preserved in family important archives. It is important to contextualize the manuscript in the historical background in which the journey took place , therefore in the second chapter I have developed a mapping of the Italian travellers who in the first years of the 19th century visit Rome for various reasons and I have tried to emphasise the peculiar features of each journey. Different journeys and travellers witness a process of democratization which involves the idea of travelling and gives it a "popular" value. In a country which was not yet unified the travel contributed to make distant territories near and to discover common elements across Italy. The third chapter is a personal interpretation of the Camaldolese manuscript according to the criteria of the traveller's literature, and underlines the rise of contrasting positions between Bernardini and Bartolini who turn into characters. The fourth one follows the outward and return journey of the three Tuscan churchmen, set in its historical background. Therefore I mapped the condition of the road network of the Papal State in the first half of the 19th century, a period of Risorgimento and Restaurazione, characterised by important changes; I have also shown how distant the three me' culture is from the Risorgimento, even though it affected the objects of their interest and the journey itself. The fifth chapter contains a list of the travel texts preserved in the cultural institutes I visited for my research. The manuscript has been inserted as addendum.

The opportunity for this work originates from the recent discovery of two codices on wheels for perpetual motion in Tehrān and in Manchester by G. Ferriello, whose paper will follow in this issue. Now the similarity of the drawings existing in these manuscripts with known ones on the same topic by Leonardo and by other Renaissance engineers requires some reflections on possible relationships and on the transmission of knowledge between East and West in the field of Mathematics and Engineering in the Early Modern age. The substantial studies on Renaissance engineers do not refer anything to researches on technical-scientific development in the Islamic world, nor particularly in the Persian world, which we will deal with. This certainly did not happen for lack of documentary material, but of interest of scholars to sources in not European languages, with the consequent lack of comparisons between historical-cultural contexts that have shared a lot in the past, inheriting and transmitting Classical and Hellenistic texts that were acquired, translated, integrated and then returned to their original sphere. The studies on the Renaissance, favoured by the interest in machines intended in a philosophical - as well as technological - key and extended to the experimentation of machines in building sites, have made known a vast documentary heritage, consisting of writings and drawings; these works have also promoted the interest in Mechanics applied to the building subject and for its protagonists, from Taccola to Francesco di Giorgio to Leonardo; but not always adequate emphasis has been given to the means of transmission of the sources, that have been somehow forgotten after the translation of ancient texts into Latin or vernacular, or even denied for religious or political reasons in Catholic Europe: thus has been lost, in many cases, the added value represented by the passages through the scientific culture of the Near East. ; Questo lavoro nasce dalla recente scoperta di due codici sul moto perpetuo rivenuti a Teheran e a Manchester da parte di Giuseppina Ferriello, la cui relazione seguirà in questo numero. La somiglianza dei disegni esistenti in questi manoscritti con quelli noti sullo stesso argomento di Leonardo e di altri ingegneri rinascimentali richiede alcune riflessioni sui possibili rapporti e sulla trasmissione delle conoscenze tra Oriente e Occidente nel campo della matematica e dell'ingegneria in età moderna. I corposi studi sugli ingegneri rinascimentali non fanno alcun riferimento a ricerche sullo sviluppo tecnico-scientifico nel mondo islamico, né particolarmente nel mondo persiano, di cui ci occuperemo. Ciò non avvenne certo per mancanza di materiale documentario, ma per il mancato interesse degli studiosi verso fonti in lingue non europee, con la conseguente mancanza di confronti tra contesti storico-culturali che molto hanno condiviso in passato, ereditando e trasmettendo testi classici ed ellenistici che sono stati acquisiti, tradotti, integrati e poi riportati nella loro sfera originaria. Gli studi sul Rinascimento, favoriti dall'interesse per le macchine intese in chiave filosofica – oltre che tecnologica – ed estesi alla sperimentazione delle macchine nei cantieri, hanno reso noto un vasto patrimonio documentario, costituito da scritti e disegni; questi lavori hanno promosso anche l'interesse per la meccanica applicata all'edilizia e per i suoi protagonisti, da Taccola a Francesco di Giorgio a Leonardo. Non sempre è stata data adeguata enfasi alle modalità di trasmissione delle fonti, che sono state in qualche modo dimenticate dopo la traduzione di testi antichi in latino o volgare, o addirittura smentite per ragioni religiose o politiche; così, in molti casi, è andato perduto il valore aggiunto rappresentato dai passaggi attraverso la cultura scientifica del vicino Oriente.

Dottorato di ricerca in Storia e cultura del viaggio e dell'odeporica in età moderna ; Expedition into Sicily di Richard Payne Knight, il testo argomento della presente tesi di dottorato, è il resoconto del viaggio svolto in Sicilia, sul finire del diciottesimo secolo, da un ricco inglese accompagnato da due altrettanto benestanti acquarellisti: il noto paesaggista tedesco Philipp Hackert e il ricco dilettante inglese Charles Gore. Creduto perso per più di due secoli, il manoscritto di Knight fu ritrovato soltanto nel 1980 e pubblicato nella sua interezza per la prima volta nel 1986. Scopo del mio lavoro di tesi è far conoscere quest'opera - a lungo considerata come 'minore' - al pubblico italiano attraverso una traduzione critica e metterne in luce l'originalità così come la coerenza interna. Rifacendomi agli studi di chi mi ha preceduto, ho infatti cercato di dimostrare la sostanziale unitarietà del testo, insieme al fatto che tale unitarietà avesse lo scopo di veicolare un messaggio ben preciso: la libertà è condizione necessaria per l'eccellenza umana. Si tratta di un messaggio di chiara matrice illuminista: il giovane Knight – illuminista convinto – legge il suo viaggio attraverso la Sicilia classica come un ritorno alle origini della cultura occidentale, un viaggio a ritroso nel tempo fino all'ideale Winkelmaniano di nobile semplicità e quieta grandezza. Il suo ritorno alle origini è però ostacolato dalla realtà della Sicilia del diciottesimo secolo. L'esperienza del presente va insinuandosi progressivamente nella sua concezione di un passato ideale, imponendo allo sguardo attento di Knight una realtà fatta d'ignoranza e miseria. Queste condizioni sono state portate dall'azione di una classe dirigente e di un clero troppo potenti e corrotti e quindi, in ultima analisi, dalla mancanza di libertà. Nei passaggi della Expedition che descrivono le sue esperienze di viaggio (che caratterizzano almeno due terzi del testo), Knight analizza questa dicotomia tra passato e presente e infine, nella parte finale, dà una forma più generale alle sue idee, fino a giungere alla conclusione che la Sicilia moderna potrebbe tornare alla grandezza delle origini soltanto in seguito a un moto rivoluzionario che coinvolgesse l'intera Europa. E' interessante notare come queste riflessioni precedano di pochi anni la Rivoluzione Francese che però, pur avendo alterato profondamente gli equilibri europei, non fu sufficiente per far emergere la Sicilia dalla sua arretratezza. Il primo capitolo della tesi riporta la traduzione integrale in italiano della Expedition into Sicily con testo inglese a fronte. Il secondo capitolo: L'autore, l'argomento e la storia del manoscritto, è suddiviso in due sezioni. La prima sezione [2.1]: Notizie sulla vita e le opere di Richard Payne Knight, si propone di inquadrare la figura dell'autore del diario e fornire una panoramica sulle sue opere, mentre la seconda sezione [2.2]: Il lungo viaggio di un diario di viaggio ricostruisce, sulla base di dati oggettivi e congetture, la genesi e la storia del manoscritto della Expedition. Il terzo capitolo: Il contesto del viaggio di Knight, tratta del contesto socio-culturale in cui si è svolto il viaggio in Sicilia ed è composto da cinque sezioni. La prima sezione [3.1]: Il contesto storico: dall'Inghilterra alla Sicilia, descrive brevemente la situazione storico-politica dell'Europa, dell'Inghilterra, dell'Italia e della Sicilia in pieno periodo di rivoluzione industriale e dopo la Pace di Utrecht. La seconda sezione [3.2]: Il contesto filosofico: l'Illuminismo inglese e il pensiero di Knight, traccia le linee generali dell'Illuminismo europeo, inglese e italiano che influenzarono Knight prima, e durante e dopo il viaggio in Sicilia. La terza sezione [3.3]: Il contesto artistico: alla riscoperta dei classici tra luci ed ombre, fornisce cenni sul contesto culturale e artistico sia europeo che inglese di quegli anni, soffermandosi in modo particolare sugli autori che svilupparono teorie per definire tali stili. La quarta sezione [3.4]: Il problema del tempo nel Settecento, tratta del dibattito scientifico sul significato e sull'età dei fossili collegato, a sua volta, a quello dell'età della Terra. Si tratta del principale dibattito scientifico del Settecento ed influenza l'idea del tempo, della storia e della geologia di Knight. La quinta sezione [3.5]: Il Grand Tour nella seconda metà del Settecento, presenta una panoramica sulle condizioni logistiche del viaggio in Italia e le motivazioni dei Grand Tourists. Il quarto capitolo: L'analisi del testo e il pensiero di Knight, si suddivide in due sezioni. La prima sezione [4.1]: Analisi del testo, ripercorre brevemente le tappe del viaggio di Knight, approfondisce le scene del diario che si rifanno al pittoresco letterario ed ai caratteri sociali dei siciliani e traccia le conclusioni finali del viaggio. La seconda sezione [4.2]: Gli stereotipi sull'Italia, discute la posizione di Knight su alcuni luoghi comuni che i viaggiatori del suo tempo avevano sugli italiani ed, in particolare, sui siciliani. Infine, aspetti di non stretta attinenza con l'argomento del presente lavoro, ma da me trattati in altra sede, hanno incontrato l'interesse e l'epprezzamento della comunità scientifica internazionale. Si tratta, in particolare, dello studio presentato a Malta in occasione del convegno Encountering Malta: British Writers and the Mediterranean 1760-1840 (novembre 2011), in cui ho proposto un'interpretazione originale del pensiero storico di Knight, collegandolo con quello del noto storico inglese suo contemporaneo Edward Gibbon. Il lavoro è stato accettato per la pubblicazione dalla rivista The Wordsworth Circle. ; Expedition into Sicily by Richard Payne Knight, the text subject of this PhD thesis, is the account of the journey through Sicily taken, at the end of the Eighteenth Century, by a rich Englishman, together with two equally wealthy watercolorists: the renowned German landscape painter Philipp Hackert and the English amateur Charles Gore. Believed lost for more than two centuries, Knight's manuscript was rediscovered only in 1980, and published for the first time in English in 1986. Aim of my thesis is to introduce this work to the Italian audience through a critical translation, and to point out its originality as well as its internal coherence. Referring to the studies of those who preceded me, I have tried to demonstrate the substantial unity of the text, along with the fact that this internal consistency was intended to convey a very precise message: freedom is a necessary condition for human excellence. This is a message clearly influenced by Enlightenment culture: the young Knight saw his journey through Sicily as a return to the classical origins of Western culture, a journey back in time to the Winkelmanian ideal of noble simplicity and quiet grandeur. His return to the origins, however, was hampered by the reality of Eighteenth Century Sicily. The experience of the present crept gradually into his conception of an ideal past, imposing to his watchful eye a reality of ignorance and misery. These dramatic conditions had been brought by a corrupted ruling class and a too powerful clergy, in other words by a lack of freedom. In the analysis of the scenes depicting his travel experiences (featuring at least two thirds of the text), Knight examines the dichotomy between past and present, and finally, in the end, he gives a more general form to his ideas, coming to the conclusion that Sicily could return to the greatness of its origins only after a revolutionary movement involving the whole of Europe. It's interesting to note that these reflections preceded of a few years the French Revolution, which, despite having profoundly altered the European balance, was not enough to bring out the Sicily from its backwardness. The first chapter of the thesis contains the complete translation of the Expedition into Sicily in Italian with the English text opposite. The second chapter: The author, the topic, and the history of the manuscript, is divided into two sections. The first section [2.1]: The life and works of Richard Payne Knight, intends to frame the figure of the author of the diary and provide an overview of his works, while the second section [2.2]: The long journey of a travel diary reconstructs, on the basis of objective data and conjectures, the genesis and history of the manuscript of the Expedition. The third chapter: The context of Knight's trip, traces the socio-cultural context of the trip to Sicily and is composed of five sections. The first section [3.1]: The historical context: from England to Sicily, briefly describes the historical and political situation of Europe, England, Italy and Sicily at the height of the Industrial Revolution and after the Peace of Utrecht. The second section [3.2]: The philosophical context: the English Enlightenment and the thought of Knight, traces the general lines of the European, English and Italian Enlightenment that influenced Knight before, during and after his trip to Sicily. The third section [3.3]: The artistic context: the rediscovery of classics between lights and shadows, provides an outline of the cultural and artistic contexts of the second half of the Eighteenth Century, focusing in particular on the authors who developed theories to define concepts like Beauty, Picturesque and Sublime. The fourth section [3.4]: The problem of time in the Eighteenth Century, focuses on the scientific debate on the significance and the age of fossils, which is linked, in turn, to the age of the Earth. This was the main scientific debate of the Eighteenth Century and it influenced Knight's ideas on time, history and geology. The fifth section [3.5]: The Grand Tour in the second half of the of the Eighteenth Century, presents an overview of the logistical conditions of travel in Italy and the motivations of the Grand Tourists. The fourth chapter: The analysis of the text and of Knight's thought, is divided into two sections. The first section [4.1]: Text Analysis, briefly reviews the stages of Knight's journey, discusses the scenes of the Expedition referring to the literary picturesque and to the social characteristics of Sicilians and, finally, draws the final conclusions of the trip. The second section [4.2]: The stereotypes about Italy, discusses Knight's position on some clichés that the travelers of his time had on Italians and, in particular, on Sicilians. Finally, aspects not strictly relevant to the topic of this work, which I have treated elsewhere, have met the interest and appreciation of the international scientific community. This is, in particular, the study presented at the conference in Valletta Encountering Malta: British Writers and the Mediterranean 1760-1840 (November 2011), in which I have proposed an original interpretation of Knight's historical thought, connecting it with that of the English historian Edward Gibbon's. The work has been accepted for publication by the journal The Wordsworth Circle.

Dottorato di ricerca in Storia e cultura del viaggio e dell'odeporica nell'età moderna ; I capitoli introduttivi di questo lavoro di tesi delineano la storia del viaggio, analizzando le esperienze del patrimonio collettivo, strettamente legate alla mobilità, in un excursus che attraversa le varie epoche. Si sono esaminati i viaggi degli eroi alla ricerca della conoscenza e di orizzonti sempre nuovi da scoprire e il pellegrinaggio che trae origine dal viaggio di espiazione di Adamo e Eva ed ha come scopo la purificazione dalle proprie colpe, per affrontare poi il pellegrinaggio dell'anima volto all'edificazione di chi lo compie, attraverso la conoscenza dei luoghi santi. Nell'XI XII secolo fiorisce la cultura profana e con essa i viaggi a scopo culturale, verso le università e i centri di sapere, ma anche i viaggi dei mercanti verso l'estremo oriente, regno delle spezie e delle meraviglie. Le prime esplorazioni africane e atlantiche permettono infine di aprire nuove vie al mercato delle spezie, ma anche di convertire nuovi popoli alla fede cristiana. Nel cinquecento nasce il viaggio moderno: saranno soprattutto i giovani inglesi aristocratici o i ricchi rampolli della classe borghese ad attraversare le Alpi, accompagnati da un tutor, alla volta dell'Italia, per osservare di persona i luoghi di cui hanno letto sui libri. Fondamentale sarà il saggio baconiano Of travel del 1597, che definirà le norme per il viaggiatore dando utili consigli per preparare e affrontare il viaggio.Le strade del vecchio continente si popolano di giovani stranieri, ormai non più soltanto inglesi, ma anche francesi e tedeschi, ben presto il fascino dell'Oriente, dell'India e delle mete esotiche subisserà le mete europee. Con il Grand Tour il viaggio diventa finalmente un tempo di piacere e con le scoperte archeologiche alla metà del settecento l'itinerario si arricchirà di nuove tappe nell'Italia meridionale. Nel XIX secolo nasce il turista moderno: nel 1841 Thomas Cook organizzerà viaggi di piacere dapprima per le classi operaie, per rivolgersi poi alle più ricche.Infine, le spedizioni geografiche a scopo di studio, troveranno ampio risalto nelle riviste specializzate: si sono prese in esame le pubblicazioni dei Fratelli Treves.Nel 3 capitolo, invece, si è preso in considerazione un manoscritto conservato presso la Biblioteca Vallicelliana di Roma. Si tratta di un quaderno che racchiude le Memorie storiche della deportazione del Canonico Telesforo Galli, avvenuta tra il giugno 1810 e l'aprile 1814, a causa del mancato giuramento di fedeltà a Napoleone. Galli ripercorre nelle sue Memorie gli anni memorabili tra il 1808 e il 1814, quando il governo francese prese ostilmente possesso della città di Roma e usurpò ingiustamente il governo di tutto lo Stato Pontificio, deportandone il legittimo sovrano, Papa Pio VII, dapprima a Savona e poi in Francia. La scrittura è molto sintetica, si susseguono nomi, date e luoghi che lasciano poco spazio all'evocazione d'immagini paesaggistiche, ma è ugualmente interessante seguire l'autore in questa diaspora che lo porterà dapprima come deportato e poi come detenuto a Piacenza, Alessandria, Genova e, infine, nelle carceri di Bastia, in Corsica, dove resterà fino alla liberazione.A tratti il manoscritto presenta le caratteristiche del pellegrinaggio dell'anima, qui, diversamente dal viaggiatore medievale, che si reca nei luoghi sacri per edificarsi, sono i protagonisti della deportazione a rendere i luoghi di detenzione meta di numerosi benefattori, ai quali sono dedicate queste Memorie, edificati dalla fede di questi coraggiosi.Quando tutto sembra ormai concludersi nel migliore dei modi, durante il viaggio di ritorno ecco scatenarsi una paurosa tempesta, che mette nuovamente in pericolo di vita il protagonista e i suoi compagni; si concluderà con una breve quarantena nel porto di approdo e il ritorno a Roma, dove Galli assisterà al trionfale ritorno di Pio VII. ; The introductory chapters of this thesis work outline the travel history, looking at the experiences of the collective heritage, closely linked to mobility, through various ages. Heroes travels were examined searching knowledge and new horizons to be discovered and the relative pilgrimage originated from Adam and Eva atonement travel the purpose of which is them faults purification, in order to face the soul pilgrimage aimed to reward who is doing it, through the Saint Places knowledge. During XI and XII century the profane culture blooms and also the cultural travels, towards universities and the knowledge centres, but also the merchant's travels towards the Far East, spices and wonders kingdom. Initials Atlantic and African explorations allow to open then new spices market ways, but also to convert new people to the Christian faith. In the XVI century, starts the modern concept of travel: English aristocratic young people or scions of the rich bourgeois class, will cross the Alps, accompanied by a tutor, to travel through Italy, to observe personally about the places they have read on the books. Fundamental will be the baconian text Of Travel, (year 1597), which will define the traveller rules, giving them useful suggestions to prepare and face the travel. Old continental streets start to be populated by young foreigners, now not English only but also French and German, but soon they will prefer the Oriental or Indian charm or the other exotic destinations.At the Grand Tour age, travel finally becomes a time of pleasure, with the archaeological discoveries around the half of the XVIII century, the itinerary will enrich of new stages in the southern of Italy. In the XIX century born the modern tourist: in 1841 Thomas Cook will organise pleasure travels first of all for the working class, then for the richest people. Finally, geographical expeditions for study, will find wide prominence in specialised magazines. Brothers Treves publications were taken into consideration. In Chapter 3, instead, was taken into consideration a manuscript kept at the Vallicelliana library of Rome. It is a notebook that encloses the historical memories of Canon Telesforo Galli deportation, it took place between June 1810 and April 1814, due to the non-oath of allegiance to Napoleon. Galli retraces in his Memories the memorable years between 1808 and 1814, when the French Government took hostilely possession of Rome and it usurped unjustly the Church State Government , deporting Pope Pius VII, the legitimate sovereign, first in Savona and then in France. The way to write is very synthetic, names, dates, and places come one after the other, leaving small space for the landscape images evocation, but is equally interesting to follow him into this diaspora that will lead him first as deportee and then as prisoner to Piacenza, Alessandria, Genova and, finally, in Bastia and Corsica's prisons, where he will remain until the liberation. Sometimes the manuscript presents soul pilgrimage characteristics, here, unlike the medieval traveller, who goes to holy places for reward himself, deportation protagonists make detention places a destination of many benefactors to which are dedicated these memories, rewarded by the faith of these courageous. When everything seems to be concluded in the best way, during the return journey a dramatic storm starts, which puts again in danger the protagonist life and his companions; it will conclude with a short quarantine in the arrival port and the return to Rome, where Galli will assist the Pius VII triumphant return.
