In a Parliament called back following its unlawful prorogation in September 2019, Prime Minister Boris Johnson touched a raw nerve by stating that the 'best way to honour Jo Cox's memory is to get Brexit done'. Johnson had earlier dismissed concerns about threats to Members of Parliament which echoed his inflammatory language as 'humbug'. We examine this critical parliamentary moment in the context of broader discussions about emotionality, toxic discourse and polarisation in the United Kingdom. The study combines performance analysis of the Hansard transcripts and UK Parliament YouTube coverage of the debate, with discourse analysis of national and local newspaper coverage from 25 September to 1 October 2019. We contend that in-depth examination of this moment, alongside the subsequent journalistic commentary, contributes an original case study which works to illuminate the intersections of political performance, affective atmospheres and gender in contemporary mediated political culture.

Cultural press was the stronghold of neo-realist resistance that supported a counter-hegemonic discourse and action against Salazar dictatorship. In this field, it is important to point out some feminine press in post-war time, such as Jornal-Magazine da Mulher (1950-1956), directed by Lília da Fonseca. Published monthly, it explores the potential of illustrated magazine and it contours the silence imposed by the Censorship to the public projection of the neo-realism, including through the news and the report. To that extent, it combines the usual sections of fashion, handwork and childcare with the promotion of neo-realist works, authors and key ideas, such as politicization of art, education through art or popular associativism, and the professional valorization of women, including in the intellectual domain.

Drawing on motivated information processing theory and social exchange theory, this research investigates the mediating effects of leader–member exchange and moderating impact of perspective taking in the relationship among transformational leadership and turnover intentions of public servants. Using a sample of 385 respondents from different public sectors across Pakistan, we found a negative association of transformational leadership with the turnover intentions, which is further mediated by leader–member exchange. Moreover, perspective taking moderated this mediating relationship. The present research has theoretical and practical implications. In addition, we have discussed some future directions.

Across Europe, the use of negative portrayals of immigrants in populist political advertising has dramatically increased. An experimental study tested the underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions for the effects of such ads on explicit and implicit attitudes toward foreigners. Findings revealed that populist ads strengthened intergroup anxiety and negative stereotypes for voters with lower educational degrees. This, in turn, led to more negative explicit attitudes. However, we observed stronger effects of populist ads on implicit attitudes for individuals with higher educational degrees. The necessity of including explicit as well as implicit measures in political communication research is discussed.
