this book starts by asking the question: why do the historians (medivists) now raise the question of the justification for their activity? The reason for such a question lies in the delegation of powers which currently affects the study (of [medieval] history), which is due to the loss of ideological usefulness of the study of (medieval) history. In the face of this loss of ideological utility, would it then be possible to 'save' the study of (medieval) history by demonstrating the existence of its own intellectual utility? Arguments based on an understanding of (medieval) history as a means of understanding the present or, on the contrary, as a radical change in relation to the present, are then examined to refute them. While, on the other hand, the idea that the study of medieval history is the only one capable of providing answers to certain abstract questions of social science (demonstrated here by the example of the singular figure of the relationship between usage value and exchange value in medieval society) seems acceptable, the essential point is to recognise, contrary to contemporary ideology, that it is not the usefulness of an activity that makes it meaningful and justified. ; Cet ouvrage commence par poser la question de la question : pourquoi les historiens (médiévistes) se posent-ils aujourd'hui la question de la justification de leur activité ?
