In this article, Italian philosopher and politician Gianni Vattimo (born 1936) problematizes the concept of "the end of metaphysics," which was announced in the 20th century. In Vattimo's opinion, the early 21st century sees a return of metaphysics. This points to a certain human need. Starting from two classic narratives – Friedrich Nietzsche's postulation of the death of God, and Martin Heidegger's critique of metaphysics – Vattimo proposes two alternatives: a «metaphysics of the authorized» and the «metaphysics of the downtrodden». Although the former has discredited itself, the latter hasn't. It may be this latter metaphysics that answers the profound human need without offering totalitarian forms of control, oppression, or certainty in the existence of a single truth for all.

It is shown through examples ranging from Parmenides and Plato to Whitehead and Wittgenstein that beauty is central among the values that have made metaphysical theories appealing and credible. A common attitude would be that the aesthetic properties of metaphysical theories may be important for effective presentation but are irrelevant to the cognitive value of the theories. This however is question-begging, since it assumes without argument that ultimate reality is indifferent to value-considerations such as beauty. If on the contrary we allow that the aesthetic properties of theories may be cognitively relevant, which such properties should be considered? This question is explored in the final section of the paper.

To understand the meaning of hanging as a modern legal practice, the history of hanging in England & the US is reviewed, & transcripts of a 1993 evidentiary hearing conducted on remand by the Seattle (WA) federal district court over a possible hanging are reread, drawing on the insights of Friedrich Nietzsche (1964 edition). In the evidentiary hearing, the state sought to persuade the presiding judge that hanging was a painless death. The judge was hard-pressed to ignore the conjunction of technological & scientific evidence that rationalizes hanging as a perfect execution method & gives legitimacy to the hanging law, even against liberal discourse on the violence & barbarism of the punishment. 1 Table, 40 References. THE ARTICLE EXAMINES THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF THE METAPHYSICAL ELEMENT IN NORMATIVE POLITICAL THEORY, THE CENTRAL CONTENTION BEING THAT ALL SUCH THEORY IS A KIND OF METAPHYSICS. IT ARGUES THAT THE NORMALLY ASSUMED DISTINCTION BETWEEN METAPHYSICAL FOUNDATIONS AND THE NON-METAPHYSICAL ELEMENT PERVADES THE WHOLE OF SUCH THEORIES. IT ALSO ARGUES THAT THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN "IDEOLOGICAL" AND "PHILOSOPHICAL" THEORIES IS A LARGELY SPURIOUS ONE AND THAT A UNIFYING NOTION OF POLITICAL METAPHYSICS COULD REPLACE BOTH.
