The oldest of human institutions, monarchy has been tried in a range of variations through the ages. The absolute power of kings and emperors gave way to constitutional monarchy before losing popularity in the modern age. En la antigüedad, los reyes acumulaban poder político, religioso, legislativo, judicial y militar y tenían la consideración de dioses ó semidioses; en cambio, en la actualidad, las funciones de los monarcas se hallan limitadas por constituciones democráticas, en las que se les reserva el papel de jefes de estado, pero, separado del poder ejecutivo representado por el jefe de gobierno. AbstractThis article provides a descriptive account of the evolution of the Bhutanese monarchy, and normative claims about its endurance and its nature, suggesting that the monarchy is both the expression of as well as the guardian of the country's constitutional identity. Bhutan became a democratic constitutional monarchy by adopting the written Constitution in 2008 after a successful 100 years of hereditary monarchy. The willingness of successive monarchs to evolve based on changing times, their ability to ensure stability and continuity, and work for the benefits of the people and country guided by the principles of Buddhist kingship seem to have contributed not only in them benefitting from unqualified support of the people, but also in attaining the status of an expression of Bhutanese constitutional identity.

There are many royal occasions but some are special. The marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton was the latest in a long line and proved immensely popular, bringing out large numbers of people across the country to enjoy themselves and to celebrate. Some believe the marriage of the second in line to the throne to someone outside the European royal gene pool will propel the monarchy into a new age, making it a monarchy for Middle England, more open, accessible and normal, securing its legitimacy a long way into the future.
