The fact that various myths influence the shape of law and the mythologization of some of its aspects is indisputable. In most cases, this process of "mythologization" is perceived pejoratively, leading to the establishment of groundless, irrational ideas and at the same time the rejection of "science" in favor of "fiction". This article aims to propose a different approach to both the concept of myth and the mythologization of law, by referring to the classical, ancient understanding of the concept of mythos as a fable, story. Ancient Greek myth performed a function similar to the law, establishing some basic rules in society. Stressing its "narrative" side indicates that what matters is not so much a description of reality, but a process that emphasizes the relational nature of the community. Thus, relating the myth, just like reading the norm of law, is an interpretation of the event in the light of applicable principles and systems of values, while being also a continuous process of shaping social awareness. Interpreting the law as a story means that those who create and use it lose the luxury of simply remaining the "mouth that pronounces the words of the law" as Montesquieu stated, since they are supposed to care not only for its implementation, but also for the quality and conviction of citizens as to its validity. The proposed form of reading the law as a myth-fable, political myth therefore is a search for a plot, understood as a possibility to act, to respond to the needs and problems of the changing world as well as the development of "the political" politics and education of citizens. ; Fakt wpływu rozmaitych mitów na kształt prawa oraz mitologizacja pewnych jego założeń są niepodważalne. W większości wypadków ten proces "mitologizacji" postrzegany jest pejoratywnie – jako prowadzący do ugruntowania bezpodstawnych, irracjonalnych wyobrażeń i zarazem do odrzucenia "nauki" na rzecz "fikcji". Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaproponowanie odmiennego podejścia zarówno do samego pojęcia mitu, jak i do mitologizacji prawa poprzez odwołanie się do klasycznego, antycznego rozumienia pojęcia mythos jako fabuły, opowieści. Starogrecki mit pełnił funkcję zbliżoną do prawa, ustanawiał bowiem pewne podstawowe reguły obowiązujące w społeczeństwie. Zaakcentowanie jego strony "fabularnej" wskazuje zaś, że istotny jest nie tyle opis rzeczywistości, ile proces podkreślający relacyjny charakter wspólnoty. Tym samym opowiadanie mitu, podobnie jak odczytywanie normy prawa, stanowi interpretację zdarzenia w świetle obowiązujących zasad i systemów wartości, jest również ciągłym procesem kształtowania społecznej świadomości. Ujęcie prawa jako opowieści powoduje, że ci, którzy je tworzą i stosują, tracą luksus prostego pozostania monteskiuszowskimi "ustami ustawy", ponieważ mają się troszczyć nie tylko o jego wykonywanie, lecz także o jakość oraz przekonanie obywateli co do jego słuszności. Proponowana forma odczytania prawa jako mitu-opowieści, mitu politycznego polega zatem na poszukiwaniu fabuły, czyli możliwości działania umożliwiającego reagowanie na potrzeby i problemy zmieniającego się świata oraz na rozwój polityczności i edukację obywateli.

On the threshold of the 21st century when another 12 states joined the European Union a matter of multilingualism has been recently considered as a crucial factor with regard to European integration process. Having diverse society the UE has started to promote a phrase Unity in Diversity which in turn provides patronage for a number of cultural and education campaigns. Their aim is to prepare the European citizens for cultural integration and to help them to create a sense of European identity. The main assumption of the already taken actions is taking multilingualism as the pillar of the Union and presenting it as an example of equality regardless to citizens' nationality. The herby article reveals however, that the idea of unity in diversity – at least from the linguistic point of view – is practically impossible to accomplish especially in the face of such a strong position of English in the international arena as it has nowadays. What's more, inside Union in its administration structures the idea of equality is not observed. Due to purely practical and organisational reasons just one language is used – English. Also English is the foreign language that is taught most often in schools throughout the Europe. The article presents a legal act as a potential subject of mythologization. The tools derived from the studies on political myth were used to describe a phenomenon that strictly belongs to the political and legal reality – the American JUST Act of 2017, which in recent years has caused many controversies in Polish public debate. While using the theoretical methods of the most notable researchers of the political myth, such as R. Barthes or E. Cassirer, it has been shown that legal acts, as well as their reception and interpretation, are not always based on rational forms of cognition. They can also be affected by a political myth and a mythical form of cognition, which is depicted in this study by means of methodology implemented from the studies on political myth. The article formulates interesting comments that may be useful for a better understanding of the phenomena on the border of Polish jurisprudence, political science and mythology. ; W artykule ukazano akt prawny jako potencjalny przedmiot mitologizacji. Stosując osiągnięcia teoretyczne wybitnych badaczy mitu, takich jak R. Barthes czy E. Cassirer, wykazano, że akty prawne oraz ich recepcja i interpretacja nie zawsze opierają się na racjonalnych formach poznania. Może na nie wpływać także mit polityczny i mityczna forma poznania, co przedstawiono w niniejszym opracowaniu za pomocą znanych badaniom nad mitem narzędzi teoretycznych. W artykule sformułowano interesujące uwagi, które mogą być przydatne dla lepszego zrozumienia zjawisk z pogranicza polskiego prawoznawstwa, politologii i mitologii.

The article addresses the problem of shaping the centuries-long relationship between Polish people and Ukrainians from Galicia, and discusses the factors influencing the process of shaping the national identity of the inhabitants of Lvov. The publication underlines the historical and ethnic backgrounds influencing the people living in Lvov region and in Lvov itself. The article also refers to the issue of identifying Lvov residents as Europeans. The author of the article also highlighted obstacles preventing the creation of solid foundation between the inhabitants of Lvov to build a common regional identity despite centuries of co-existence. The destabilizing elements were primarily claims to the same territory. Despite the complicated history, there is one common feature of the Lvov residents which has been preserved – as the author of the article points out – namely, their European identity. This belief has risen to the rank of myth. The article has made a synthetic analysis of the mutual relationship between Polish people and Ukrainians from the 15th century up to the present day, taking into account the influence of elements of collective memory. The current relations between the two nations are relatively well formed. After joining the EU, Poland acts as a Ukrainian supporter, regularly defending its interests. This, as well as the Orange Revolution, Euro 2012 and the Revolution of Dignity contributed to the untightened relations between these two nations. However, despite these positive actions in common relations, the attitude of a decisive part of the intellectual elite of modern Lvov residents is more and more influenced by the mythology of the multiculturalism of this city and its membership "ever since" to Europe, with the dominant Ukrainian language, and simultaneous marginalization of thousand years of belonging to the Polish state, which in effect creates a fake image of the city and its inhabitants.

Zsfassung in engl. Sprache u.d.T.: Polish political myths of the 19th and 20th centuries

This text is a review article of Michał Masłowski's monograph "Myths and political symbols of Central and Eastern Europe". Masłowski's publication presents the most widespread myths, political and national symbols of Central and Eastern Europe, along with an explanation of their origin and influence over the often turbulent centuries from the early Middle Ages to the present day. The author approaches this topic in an interdisciplinary way, trying to present what shaped nations and their culture in this part of Europe.

The article aims to identify the myths of political roles that were used by the Committee for the Defence of Democracy (CDD) to create the language image of its creation and to explain the importance of these semantic structures' configuration for the self-creation of political roles, which proved to be an effective incentive for the grassroots mobilization of the opponents of the Law and Justice party. They will be performed with the source analysis, qualitative relational content analysis, and a typology of myths. The secondary objective of the article is to verify the analytical usefulness of the theoretical tool in the form of a typology of myths created by the criterion of political roles. The research examines the theoretical framework that consists of four pairs of ideal types of myths: anthropolatrizing and diabolizing, theophanic and demonizing, divine and devilish mesistes, katechon and antichrist. The use of these theoretical categories to identify and distinguish the discursive creations and self-creations of the social movement has shown that they divide the semantic field of the political role myth in such a way that its ideal types are separable and allow us to recognize the basic semantic constructs of political roles. It has also revealed that the CDD did not use the extreme positive and negative valuation of itself and its political opponents. The movement used theophanic, divine mesistes, and katechon myths to self-legitimize discursively in the political system. It employed demonizing and antichrist myths to delegitimize the ruling political subjects. The image of the movement's creation was the expression of the sense of necessity for the emergence and activities of a good katechon which would stop the antichrist from destroying the democratic system in Poland and contribute to the protection and preservation of its constitutive values. ; Głównymi celami tego artykułu są identyfikacja mitów ról politycznych, które zostały wykorzystane przez Komitet Obrony Demokracji (KOD) do stworzenia językowego obrazu jego powstania, a także wyjaśnienie znaczenia konfiguracji tych struktur semantycznych dla autokreacji ról politycznych, które okazały się efektywnym bodźcem dla oddolnej mobilizacji przeciwników Prawa i Sprawiedliwości. Zostaną one zrealizowane przy wykorzystaniu analizy źródeł, jakościowej relacyjnej analizy zawartości i typologii mitów. Z kolei cel poboczny artykułu stanowi weryfikacja użyteczności analitycznej narzędzia teoretycznego w postaci typologii mitów, których przedmiotem są role polityczne. Testowi poddano siatkę kategorii teoretycznych obejmującą cztery pary typów idealnych mitów: antropolatryzującego i diabolizującego, teofanijnego i demonizującego, boskiego i diabelskiego mesistesu oraz katechonu i antychrysta. Wykorzystanie tych kategorii teoretycznych do zidentyfikowania i rozróżnienia dyskursywnych kreacji oraz autokreacji ruchu społecznego pokazało, że dzielą one pole semantyczne mitu roli politycznej w taki sposób, że jego typy idealne są rozłączne i umożliwiają rozpoznanie podstawowych konstruktów semantycznych ról politycznych. Uwidoczniło również, że KOD zaniechał skrajnie pozytywnego i negatywnego wartościowania siebie i swoich oponentów politycznych. Do delegitymizacji rządzących podmiotów politycznych zastosował mity demonizujący i antychrysta. The purpose of this article is to trace the ambiguous images of Russia which had been presented after October Revolution in propaganda of Central Powers. Because of the Bolsheviks' peace slogans this country suddenly became the most desired ally of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria. The autor aims to answer the following questions: – Which narratives connected to Russia did dominate in German society in 1917–1918? – To which extent were they similar and in which different from the leading narratives in such countries as Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria? – What was the background of the mentioned narratives and images? The author distinguished two major motifs connected to the image of Russia as a kind of providential force: 1) of Russia-the-Saviour (as an exemplification of the myth of "Grandpa Ivan"), 2) of Russia-a-fighter-for-peace (as a continuation of the myth of Russian Revolution).
