; The increasing importance of nation branding suggests a new understanding that appreciates national human and cultural values and their usage in international communication. The assessment of hidden potentials, deficiencies included, can prove an asset in the differentiation and branding of nations. However, human and cultural values appear closely related with cultural infrastructure variables of nation building like education quality and media use. The first section of three sections of the study deals with the theoretical background of the concept of culture with its various dimensions, while the second section reviews the literature on the concept of nation branding and its relations with public diplomacy. The third section evaluates the findings of in-depth interviews around the branding capabilities of nations in general and Turkey's potential for branding in particular, in relation to the effects of human and culture factors. The in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 foreign academicians working in six universities in Turkey (Karadeniz Teknik, Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen, Atatürk, Trabzon, Avrasya and Gümüşhane Universities). The evaluation of the findings proved that the branding of nations could be feasible and that Turkey could indeed establish herself as a brand nation if she could seize on the opportunities and utilize the required processes properly.
The concept of countries as brands has been increasingly recognized in the post-modern global world. The terms "national brand" or "country brand" define a symbolic construct, which emphasizes the attractive, unique and sustainable qualities of a nation. This paper argues that the national brand and its competitiveness, based on the new approaches of nation branding using sociological and economic theories and concepts, can establish and communicate a specific image of national identity. This paper presents some empirical findings of a study that investigate Croatian national brand. Nation branding might be obtained by a sustained dialog between government, decision makers, business, cultural and civil community, leaders, and individuals in the society. A country brand, therefore, consists of an identity and image, as a system of signs and codes, where nation branding applies widely used marketing concepts for promoting the country's image and attractiveness. Finally, the paper argues that "national brand" or "country brand"is not just a function individually performed by governments or companies, but an integrated and concerted effort on behalf of all interested stakeholders.
Contemporary research on so-called Nordic branding has provided crucial insights into the social power of states and how various actors use and circulate 'progressive' nation brand tropes for political and commercial goals. Hitherto, the literature on Nordic branding has focused on a wide range of substantive issues, among other things, human rights, gender equality, social welfare and foreign aid, but considerably less attention has been paid to the topic of security. The present article adds to a small but established literature on how the security sphere is increasingly entangled with nation branding. In the Nordic region, we argue, the latter is particularly evident in the case of Sweden – one of the world's largest per-capita arms exporters in the post-Cold War era but also a country known and often revered for its peaceful and progressive image. Focusing on the case of Sweden, the article contributes to knowledge of how defence industry-related actors (both public and private) draw on and frame nation branding tropes to sell and legitimise their products and services to both insiders (domestic constituents) and outsiders (the global security market).
During the past few decades, nation branding has emerged as one of the key strategies for national economic development. Many nations across the world, both developed and developing, have embraced the concept as they compete against each other for export markets, foreign direct investment, tourists, scarce human resources and international leverage and influence. This article explores the concept of nation branding and investigates its applicability to Zimbabwe, which has been riddled with various socio-economic and political problems during the past two decades. The main purpose of the study was to develop a model that can be used to re-brand Zimbabwe. This research study adopted a mixed-methods approach through the amalgamation of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. According to the research findings, Zimbabwe has a negative image on global map. The country needs to be re-branded and the majority of Zimbabweans are willing to be part of this process. However, for the re-branding initiative to be successful there should be a comprehensive transformation of the country's socio-political, economic and legal systems in order to create an enabling environment that is conducive for the effective application of nation branding strategies. The findings further reinforce the notion that re-branding should be part of a broader national economic development strategy for the country. The research study concludes with the propagation of the proposed transformative process model for the re-branding of Zimbabwe. DOI:10.5901/mjss.2014.v5n27p298
From 2016 to 2019, the Swedish Institute circulated a photo exhibition entitled'Swedish Dads' to approximately 50 countries where it was seen by tens of thousandsof people. This state-funded and state-sanctioned exhibition was intended torepresent the Swedish state in the international arena. The exhibition was adaptedbased on the Swedish Dads photobook produced by Swedish photographer, JohanBävman. The question is what happens when an artistic photobook is transformedinto a narrative about Swedish fatherhood and how this narrative changes as itcomes to represent the Swedish state in the international arena. The aim of this article is to contribute interdisciplinary knowledge in termsof how particular representations of fatherhood are constructed and used inthe marketing of certain norms and values in the international arena. Thisinterdisciplinary approach makes it possible to address broader kinds of questionsand to extend knowledge beyond disciplinary boundaries (Strang and McLeish2015). To do this, I examine how representations of what I call 'everyday fatherhood'are used to brand the Swedish nation as 'exceptional'. Thematic analysis and visualdiscourse analysis were combined in analyzing the material, which consisted ofthe photographs and texts used in the Swedish Dads photobook and the SwedishDads exhibition, as well as key informant interviews. The analysis highlights that while the Swedish Dads photobook emphasizedthat Swedish Dads are not so special, the Swedish Dads exhibition conveyed theopposite message, i.e., that Swedish Dads – and by extension, the Swedish state –are in fact exceptional. By showing how images of the ordinary and the everydaycan be used to achieve larger political objectives in the international arena
; This paper offers insights into the differentiation between nation branding and destination branding and how important it is for the successful rebranding of a country with a deteriorated and negative image. It is on the case of Serbia that authors wish to demonstrate how a country engages in competitive marketing strategies in order to boost investments, exports and employment opportunities, but fails to develop a coherent nation branding platform at the highest strategic level. The literature review highlights the differences and relations between three concepts - place branding, nation branding and destination branding. The paper presents the results of the content analysis of key branding initiatives, followed by visual messages, developed and implemented by the Serbian Government and the National Tourism Organization of Serbia in the period from 1996 to 2016. The results are chronologically presented in the form of a discussion, establishing links between destination branding and nation branding practices in Serbia. The conclusion is that none of the branding initiatives have proved successful until now. This is predominantly due to the Government's lack of understanding of the very concept of nation branding and it being mistaken for destination branding and tourism marketing. Current promotional efforts focus on presenting Serbia to internal and external stakeholders primarily as a tourist destination.
Branding Greenland as a form of expression of national identity? In the times of globalisation there is a tendency for countries to differentiate from others. More and more governments decide to launch professional nation branding campaigns in order to communicate to a broad public what a particular country has to offer as well as what values and images it wants to be associated with. Greenland is an example of a country that after a long period of colonisation and establishing self-government, in 2009 began to redefine its identity and reveal it to the world. A branding campaign has been implemented to communicate a newly defined image of Greenland. This campaign has been carried out using mainly social media and the tools that the Internet has to offer. The aim of this paper is to explore the concept of nation branding and to define the relation between nation branding and national identity. The purpose is also to analyse what images of Greenland as a brand are presented by "Pioneering nation" campaign.
In today`s globalized world, nations are increasingly concerned about how they are perceived by their publics, often carefully planning and executing policies to maintain a positive identity or shed a negative image. While some countries are able to execute nation branding, others are not. Using the Nigerian experience as a case study, this article shows how the character of a state can undermine its capacity for successful nation branding. We argue that countries are judged not just by what they say but also by what they do, and that inherent contradictions such as sectarian violence, ethnic tension, and corruption underline Nigeria`s underdevelopment and its reputation at home and abroad. We assess this trajectory in the context of state fragility and "prebendalization" politics in a country with a powerful colonial legacy, and suggest a duality of order and disorder involving formal and informal structures of governance that impinge significantly on re-branding efforts.
The purpose of the study is to clarify the role of culture as a tool for nation branding development, as well as national brand's building and promoting within the global context of the national discourse. To reach the aim of the research, there was carried out the systematisation of the "nation branding" and "nation brand" concepts, as well as the analysis of theoretical and practical aspects of both nation and cultural brand and image of the country in the context of international cooperation. The research methodology consists in using general methods of empirical and theoretical research based on analysis, synthesis and concretisation. It is to analyse and summarise the results to reveal the "culture" factor's importance in the nation branding development as an externally oriented phenomenon, in the context of international interaction providing information about what the country is. The scientific novelty of the study is to clarify the cultural constituent's role in the process of the nation branding development in the context of the "State policy in the field of nation branding"; with the carrying out the analysis of the "culture and heritage" component as a criterion influencing the "Nation Brands" world reputation indexing; looked into the strategies for the Ukrainian culture development as an axis of building a nation brand and international image of Ukraine in the context of cultural diplomacy and intercultural dialogue; with paying attention to the content of the "Study of Ukraine's perception abroad" results as an indicator of the world awareness of Ukrainian culture in the nation branding context. The conclusions point out that today in the system of international cooperation, culture: cultural heritage, cultural diversity and cultural potential of the country — is gaining importance as a tool for building a national brand and is the most effective means of creating a country/state's positive international image in the long run. A successful nation branding allows increasing the level of the state's political influence in the international arena and strengthening international ties, etc. ; Цель исследования — определить роль культуры как инструмента построения национального брендинга, а также развития и продвижения национального бренда в глобальном контексте национального дискурса. This paper examines the attractiveness of Brand Zimbabwe based on the factors perceived to impact on national competitiveness. Nation brand attractiveness is a necessary condition for a country to achieve influence and to effectively compete for global resources. Countries can enhance their attractiveness by building on their national brand equity and dealing with negatives around the national brands. The research sought to determine the perception towards Zimbabwe's global risk and competitiveness; to ascertain the variables that promote competitiveness for Brand Zimbabwe and to contribute to the literature on risk perception and its impact on behaviour towards nation brands. The study followed a mixed approach; a combination of interpretivism and positivism. The research drew 372 respondents from politicians, scholars, the media, civic organisations, government officials, church and international organisations. The research established that Brand Zimbabwe faces glaring threats risks that impact on the country's international image. The brand is affected by politics and governance together with socio-economic factors. Management and control of nation brand perception are critical for nations to distinguish themselves and to create vantage positions for sustainable performance. The way a country is viewed internationally is a function of how the country deals with factors that threaten its global competitiveness and perception towards the nation brand. Zimbabwe's quest for foreign direct investment, international visitation and export revenue requires that the country deals with its nation brand image.
"Branding Brazil examines a panorama of contemporary cultural productions including film, television, photography, and alternative media to explore the transformation of citizenship in Brazil from 2003 to 2014. A utopian impulse drove the reproduction of Brazilian cultural identity for local and global consumption; cultural production sought social and economic profits, especially greater inclusion of previously marginalized people and places. Marsh asserts that three communicative strategies from branding-promising progress, cultivating buy-in, and resolving contradictions-are the most salient and recurrent practices of nation branding during this historic period. More recent political crises can be understood partly in terms of backlash against marked social and political changes introduced during the branding period. Branding Brazil takes a multi-faceted approach, weaving media studies with politics and cinema studies to reveal that more than a marketing term or project emanating from the state, branding was a cultural phenomenon"--
