One of the goals of peace studies is to nourish a commitment to nonviolent social change. To accomplish this, it is imperative that teachers educate accordingly, both in what they teach and in how they teach. This article explores that idea by examining the key terms: "education,""nonviolence," and "social change." First, definitions of the word "education" are examined, and it is argued that peace studies is education that is liberal and liberating. This leads to a discussion of the concept of nonviolence, which is presented in terms of three issues: violence and human nature, structural violence, and personal commitment to nonviolence. Finally, the concept of social change is examined in its relationship to the notion of power, to the importance of envisioning a better world, and to the importance of group action. Two models of social change are offered. Finally, classroom examples are provided that illustrate ways in which both content and pedagogy can contribute to the goal of education for nonviolent social change.

This article presents a Gandhian‐style blueprint for nonviolent change. It is written with an eye toward assisting academics and educators, at both the secondary and postsecondary levels, in making Mohandas K. Gandhi accessible and relevant. It employs a heuristic designed to illustrate how Gandhian principles and practices can be implemented to achieve meaningful change. The heuristic builds on the old‐fashioned cliché for education, the three Rs, in which the three Rs here stand for resistance, reform, and redemption. Also described are the three Ss representing Gandhian self‐suffering, simplicity, and service, and the three Ts for trusteeship, tolerance, and truth. The resulting blueprint illustrates how Gandhi masterfully merged principles with practices, how he connected the personal to the public, and how he wove together the political, social, and spiritual aspects of his life and work.

For much of the twentieth century, the War Resisters League (WRL) has offered a "socialist" pacifist critique of the existing world order & capitalistic system. Virtually alone among the secular Left in America, the WRL repudiated the use of armed violence to promote class war, advance social revolution, & defeat fascism during the Spanish Civil War. Unlike international wars, which it considered the product of capitalist rivalries & power politics, the League viewed the Spanish conflict as a class war/social revolution & championed a nonviolent social revolution & Republican victory. Also, WRL members both played a prominent role the Socialist Party (SP) debate over the Spanish conflict & formulated a pacifist critique of the SP & those radicals who embraced armed defense & armed social revolution in Spain. Largely unknown, this socialist pacifist current comprises an important alternative vision in the American socialist tradition, & one with continued relevance to nonviolent social change.
