Outward-facing epistemic vice

AbstractThe epistemic virtues and vices are typically defined in terms of effects or motivations related to the epistemic states of their possessors. However, philosophers have recently begun to consider other-regarding epistemic virtues, traits oriented toward the epistemic flourishing of others. In a similar vein, this paper discusses outward-facing epistemic vices, properties oriented toward the epistemic languishing of others. I argue for the existence of both reliabilist and responsibilist outward-facing vices, and illustrate how such vices negatively bear on the epistemic prospects of others. I pay special attention to how outward-facing epistemic vices may manifest in online activities that promote the epistemic languishing of others by negatively influencing the online epistemic environment.

Outward FDI and economic growth
In: Journal of economic studies, Band 37, Heft 5, S. 476-494
ISSN: 1758-7387
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of outward foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth.Design/methodology/approachTwo econometric approaches are used: cross‐country regressions for a sample of 50 countries and time‐series estimators for the USA.FindingsBoth approaches tell the same story: outward FDI is positively associated with growth. This finding is robust to several model specifications, potential outliers, and different estimation techniques. In addition, Granger‐causality tests for the USA indicate that causality is bidirectional, suggesting that increased outward FDI is both a cause and a consequence of increased domestic output.Originality/valuePrevious studies have primarily examined the firm‐ and industry‐level effects of outward FDI – for example, on domestic investment, employment, and productivity. This paper, in contrast, deals with the effects of aggregate outward FDI on the economy as a whole.
